Robert Frederick Jones passed peacefully in his sleep at his daughter's home in Rocklin, Calif. on Oct. 8, 2013.
He was 83. Bob was born in Sugarcreek, Ohio, on May 3, 1930. His parents were Evalena Berry Jones and J. Fred Jones. An outstanding student, Bob attended Stony Point School and Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School. In high school, he boxed under the name "The Sugarcreek Kid" and was a Golden Gloves champion. Bob graduated with a BS in Dairy Technology from Iowa State University, where he was in ROTC and on the college rifle team. He married Virginia Kaylor of Bristol, Tenn. after the two met at the USO in Richmond, Va. They moved to San Diego, Calif. where both of their children were born. Bob served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He attended law school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He worked for Nationwide Insurance for 30 years and was an American Legion member.
Bob's wife, Virginia Kaylor Jones died Nov. 2, 2002. He is survived by Paul F. Jones of Maitland, Fla.; Deborah S. Jones of Rocklin, Calif.; grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan Jones of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; brothers, Roger Jones (Johanna) of Webster, Fla.; John P. Miller (Nickie) of Fayetteville, N.C.; and sister, Frances Ingram (James) of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at Union Hill United Methodist Church, Sugarcreek, OH with graveside military tribute at Union Hill Cemetery and luncheon at Dutch Valley Restaurant.
