OBITUARY - Star-News - Apr 7, 1996

VARNAMTOWN - Mrs Lola Irene DeVault Swain, age 93, of 210 Varnamtown Rd., died Thursday evening, April 4, 1996 at her residence.
Mrs. Swain was born in McDowell County on June 10, 1902, and was the daughter of the late Hugh Alexander Tate DeVault and Mary Alice Brown DeVault. She began teaching school in Brunswick County in the 1920s and taught for several years. Mrs Swain was a charter member of Gospel Center Church. She was pre-deceased by her husband, George C. Swain and a step-daughter, Retha S Richardson.
She is survived by a son, George Ennis Swain and wife, Marilyn of Varnamtown; two grandchildren, Nathan Swain and Rachel.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 1996, at 1 p.m. at Gospel Center Baptist Church with Reverend Doug Worley, Reverend Weston Varnam, Reverend Norman Bellamy and Reverend Tracy Varnum officiating. Burial will follow in the Gospel Center Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Sherman Varnam, Terry Varnam, Adam Cannady, Earl McCall, Charles Parsons and Billy Casion.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wilson Lancaster, Cecil Holden, Legwin Varnam, Carvin Robinson, Willard Hansley, Ed Varnam, Clyde Varnam and John Holden.
The family will receive friends from 4:30-6:30 this evening at Coble Ward-smith Funeral Service Supply Chapel and other times from the residence.
