BASIC FACTS
Henry Davault was born on 2 May 1805 in DeVault's Ford Plantation, Washington Co., Tennessee.3,1,2 He was born on 2 May 1815 in Probably wrong - Henry was first born.4,5 He and Mary Virginia Smith "Virginia" Maughs were married in 1834 in Montgomery County, Missouri.1 He died on 3 April 1847, at age 41, in New Florence, Montgomery Co., Missouri.5 He died on 3 March 1849, at age 43.4 He died on 5 April 1849, at age 43, in Montgomery Co., Missouri.1 He was buried in First in the Davault Family Plot, across the road from Peter Davault's place. On October 30, 1895, he was moved to New Florence Cemetery, New Florence, Montgomery Co., Missouri, Section 2, Block 56, Grave 2A (V.)1,4 Henry Davault had reference number 225. He resided in Washington Co., Tennessee; Montgomery Co., Missouri (1831.)1 He was enumerated on the census in Montgomery County, Missouri (1840.) Henry Davault was the first child born to Frederick and Margaret Davault. He was also the first child born at the joint homestead of Frederick and Valentine Davault. Henry was thirteen when his parents moved from the farm at DeVault's Ford on the Watauga to Leesburg. It was here, at the DeVault Tavern, that Henry lived until he moved to Missouri with his brother, Peter, and Peter's wife. There are several dates given for this move, some as early as 1827. However, records show that Henry and Peter were in Tennessee from October of 1830 until October of 1831. Peter was married on October 27, 1831, and it is believed that the three of them left for Missouri shortly after that.
Henry lived with Peter and his wife for a while after they moved to Missouri. In 1833 he made a trip To St. Louis to enter some land for Peter. In a letter to his sister, Mary, in Tennessee, dated, September 1, 1833, he stated that he had bought a farm five miles west of Peter's. In this same letter he had this to say on the subject of marriage: "I haven't spoken to any girl yet and don't intend to. I haven't seen one that was worth having. There are several girls in the neighborhood. I won't marry any girl that ain't worth anything. If they have a bed they do lay and sleep when they ought to be up and working. I won't have no such girls if I do know it. I will live single all my life." A little less than a year later Henry married Virginia Maughs. Her family had moved to Montgomery County from Fleming, Kentucky in 1832. (See letter below.)
In 1834, when the town of Danville was selected as a county seat for Montgomery County, land for the new town was donated by Henry Davault and Conrad Carpenter. Henry owned the western part and Conrad Carpenter owned the eastern part.
Henry died in 1849 and was buried in the Davault Family Plot across the road from Peter's house. Henry's wife, Virginia, died in 1895 and was buried in the New Florence Cemetery. Just 23 days later, Henry's body was removed from the Davault burial grounds and buried beside his wife. The bodies of Peter Davault and his wife were transferred to New Florence Cemetery at the same time.

Interesting Letter Nearly One Hundred Years Old
When John B. DeVault of Mexico was in Tennessee several weeks ago visiting relatives he found many interesting family heirlooms and interesting family history. Among the letters was one we print below written in 1833 by Henry Davault who at that time was visiting his brother, Peter Davault, father of Alf Davault who lived where J. U. Knox now lives.

I now take the opportunity to write to you to inform you that I am well at present. My brother and his family also, and I hope that these few lines will find you all in perfect health we have had our health as well as we ever had. I am still living with my brother. I have this month to stay with him and then I am going to the place where I have bought five miles west of him on the road. I gave eight hundred dollars for me a place and I have been offered nine hundred and seventy-five. I do ask one thousand dollars. This place is very well improved. There is a very good house, two stone chimneys and two stoves in them and a well. There is eighty acres under very good fense. Seven acres of meadow. This man that talked of buying my place lives in Virginia near Abigdon. He is to let me know now in a few days whether he will take it or not. If he does take my place I don't know whether I will buy again or not in this state. I think I will go to the Arkansas and look at that. I have been told that it is the best state of land and very good water and water mills. I have seen but one water mill in this state. It is true the land is better here than in Tennessee. The most I have against this state there is no good water. There are no springs about the prairie. We have got a very good crop of corn. I have never see such a drouth in my life. We haven't had no rain since the last of June. Our corn is dry and we have taken our fodder. The corn is drier than I have seen it in October.
I do intend to sow twenty acres of wheat this fall I have got tired out on corn bread. I have got to buy wheat to sow and I have to give fifty cents a bushel. I do intend of sowing it now as soon as I can get it. I have been in St. Louis about two weeks ago to enter some land for my brother. They had the cholera very bad there. I have seen some that had the cholera when I was in there. I was in the room where they were lying in St. Charles. I think where we live it is as healthy as it is any where in the United states, but all this in nothing, I would rather live there if I had me a place there. The letter you wrote to me you want to know when I am coming in. I can't tell you yet. If I do sell I expect to come in next fall, if I don't I can't tell when. I want to see you all very bad. It is almost one year since I have seen you all. Only lacks two days of a year. I haven't spoke to any girl yet and don't intend. I haven't seen one that was worth having. There are several girls in the neighborhood. If I do ever get married I must think I am getting something. I won't marry any girl that ain't worth anything. The girls here have a horse and saddle and they are always riding. If they have a bed they do lay and sleep when they aught to be up and working. I won't have no such girls if I do know it. I will live single my life. I would have wrote to you sooner but my brother wrote to you. You were so kind as to pay the postage of the letter that you wrote to me. Now I want to know about all the weddings that was in the neighborhood and whether you are agoing to marry.

* Should be 1805. The 1840 Census shows that Henry and Mary had three children: 1 male 5-10 years old and 2 females under 5 years old. Assuming that Elijah was misplaced on the form, we are still missing one child.
