BENJAMIN F. HOFFACKER JR.
MIDLAND - Benjamin F. Hoffacker Jr. was born July 15, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Midland, Texas, the town he called home for 44 years. ``Ben'' loved his family, the oil business, fly-fishing, a good hunting dog, West Texas, faithful friends and the Presbyterian church. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church, Midland, Texas, and a Stephens Minister. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Suez Shrine. Ben was a 50-year member of the American Association of Professional Geologists and a charter member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists where he was registered as Certified Professional Geologist No. 267.
Ben proudly served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his discharge, Ben received a bachelor of arts degree in geology from Lehigh University in Lehigh, Pa., in 1946 and a master of science in petroleum geology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1948.
During his early years in the oil business Ben worked for Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. (Standard of Indiana), South Penn Oil Co. (Bradford, Pa.), and Seaboard Oil Co. (Abilene, Texas). In 1958, when Seaboard Oil Co. merged with the Texas Co., Ben was transferred to Midland where he later worked for Monsanto Chemical Co. (Lion Oil Division). In January of 1962, with the establishment of Grover, MacCurdy and Hoffacker, Ben joined the ranks of West Texas independent operators from 1970 to the present. Ben worked successfully as an independent operator and consultant, drilling and developing production both for individual investors and limited partnerships throughout the lower 48 states and Canada.
Ben Hoffacker was a member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists; charter member of American Institute of Professional Geologists; past president Abilene Geological Society (Texas); past chairman stratigraphic committee, Abilene Geological Society; past secretary-treasurer American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1966-1968; Permian Basin Study Group Committee for AIPG Publication ``Geology of Natural Gas in North America,'' 1959; vice president, Texas section, American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1969-1970; president, Texas section, AIPG, 1970-1971; chairman environmental geology committee of West Texas Geological Society; ethics committee, American Institute of Professional Geologists; house of delegates of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, 1974-1976; chairman, Permian Basin Petroleum Association Scholarship Fund, 1978-1981; governmental affairs committee, American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1982-1985; and vice president, West Texas Geological Society, 1994-1995.
Ben Hoffacker leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Retha Rae Hoffacker; children and stepchildren, Nan Bennett, Kimberly Gilbert, Doug Gordon, Jane Gordon, Benjamin Hoffacker III, Charles Hoffacker, Matthew Hoffacker, Sandra Hoffacker, Mimi Key, Shawn Massey, Troby Parrish and Patrick Wright; and 16 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jerry Hilton officiating, assisted by Dr. F. Ray Riddle. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church, Vision 2000 fund, or a charity of choice.
