TWO KILLED BY I.C. TRAIN
Elcanah Felts and Jefferson Harper Run Over Near Radom While Walking on Track.
Elcanah Felts of DuBois and Jefferson Harper of Ashley were killed by an Illinois Central train Monday evening, one-fourth mile south of Radom. The dead bodies were discovered shortly after the accident by Anton Price as he was going from his home north to Radom. Price testified that he himself had been nearly run over by a southbound I.C. extra freight train running in the dark without a head light.
At the inquest held by Coroner Dr. O. J. Magebush of Ashely the jury disagreed as to what train killed the men and was adjourned by the coroner till today or tomorrow, pending the testimony of the train crew. The trainmen, it is believed, can tell definitely how the men came to their death. The coroner's jury consisted of M. D. Pawlowski, Martin Szczpanski, S. Naliborski, John Pawlowski, Jacob Klix and John Nicrant.
The bodies were found lying between the double track and it is presumed that the men while walking from DuBois to Ashley were run over by a north bound train and instantly killed Monday at 8 p.m. The bodies were taken to Radom where the inquest was held Tuesday morning. It is supposed that Felts intended to visit his sons at Ashley and Harper was on his way home.
Mr. Felts was 63 years old and a miner by occupation. He leaves four sons, George and Clarence of DuBois and Frank and Charles of Ashley, and one daughter, Mrs. Ed Martin, south of Nashville, nine grandchildren, a brother, Jerome Felts of Odin, three half-sisters: Mrs. Jasper Clemmons and Mrs. Frank Calloway of Nashville, and Mrs. Wm. Burnett of East St. Louis and his aged blind step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Porter of here. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at Little Prairie in Bolo township.
Jefferson Harper, a plasterer by trade, was 52 years old. He was raised near Ashley and leaves a wife and three children, Mrs. Frank Felts, and Mrs Charles Felts and James Harper of Ashley. The funeral services were held at Ashley Wednesday afternoon and interment made

BASIC FACTS
Clarence Howard Felts was born on 21 January 1884 in Illinois.1 He and Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" Hampton were married on 18 December 1909.1 He died on 14 October 1927, at age 43, in Du Quion, Perry Co., Illinois.4 He died on 24 October 1927, at age 43, in Illinois.1 Clarence Howard Felts had reference number 34231. He resided in DuBois, Washington Co., Illinois (1913.)5 He was a Laborer - railroad (1910.)2 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Illinois (1900, 1910.) Clarence and Elizabeth died before their children were old enough to take care of themselves. This is what Curtis Felts had to say about what happened to their children:
"Elizabeth (my grandmother) had already died from cancer (of the throat I believe) when Clarence (my grandfather) was killed by a train that he was crawling under (sounds familiar, right). This was 1927 so Loren was about 11. Oscar (Jack) was already out of the house, Howard was about 16 and Doris and Harvey were younger. I don't know the personalities, but instead of caring for the kids, the relatives cleaned out the house of valuables and distributed the kids. Howard was old enough to fend for himself. My Dad was adopted (though apparently not legally since he was never given any of the remains of the Albert Miller estate) by Albert and Amanda Miller. The Millers had two daughters, Ruth and Margaret, both still alive in DuQuoin. Doris and Harvey were also "adopted", Doris by a family I believe in Arcola, Illinois and Harvey, just a baby, was officially adopted and name changed to Hinkley. He lived in St. Louis or around there."
Note: In the 1930 Census, George Howard Felts, Jr. (listed as Howard G. Felts) was living with the family of William S. Wright in Coles County, Illinois. He was listed as a ward.
