The Rev. Luther Samuel Straley, 81, of Coxsackie, N.Y., died Wednesday at Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y., after a brief illness.
A retired Lutheran clergyman and Lancaster County native, he was pastor of historic Zion Lutheran Church in Athens, N.Y., for 44 years before his retirement in 1973. Earlier in his career he had served pastorates in Bainbridge and Plainfield.
Born in Maytown, he was the son of Charles A. and Rosa Kraut Straley. He was a graduate of Gettysburg College and Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary.
During his pastorate in Athens, he was active in youth and Boy Scout work. In World War II he served as Greene County civil defense coordinator.
His wife, the former Martha Epply, died in 1972.
Survivors include a brother, George H. Straley, Wilmington, Del., and three sisters: Mary E. Foerster, Redlands, Calif.; Martha E. Robinson, Danvers, Mass.; and Esther K. Swick, Arlington, Va.
