SMITHFIELD, IL - Glade R. Martindale, 87, of Smithfield passed away at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, IL.
He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Bernadotte, Ill., the son of Grover and Willie (Green) Martindale. He married Mildred LaFern Pigg on Aug. 4, 1945, in Lewistown. She died July 4, 1994.
He also was preceded in death by one son, Bill Martindale, one brother and three sisters.
Surviving are four sons, Robert (Debra) Martindale of Smithfield, Doug (Cheryl) Martindale of Ipava, Dennis (Elizabeth) Martindale of Canton and Kenneth (Beverly) Martindale of Lewistown; three daughters, Sara (Jeff) Toomer of Mahomet, Gena (Dana) O'Leary of Canton and Ellen (Steven) Milleson of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Freda (Joe) Gallien of Canton.
He worked for more than 40 years as a coal miner before retiring and was a member of the UMWA.
He was a WWII Army veteran, serving with the 104th Infantry Timber Wolves, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a 60-year member of Lewistown VFW Post 5001.
He enjoyed working hard, gardening, dogs and babies. He also enjoyed listening to music at Hilda's and the VFW in Lewistown.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown, with the Rev. Layton Malone officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Post 5001 and American Legion Bishop Post 1. Visitation will be Sunday, April 5, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the memorial home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lewistown VFW Post 5001.
