Elizabeth "Betty Marie" McLellan Carter died on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004..
Betty was born in Dalton, Ga., on June 16, 1932, to John and Frances McLellan..
She graduated from Dalton High School and then attended Agnes Scott College, where she graduated in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology..
On July 11 of that year, she married Albert Munn Carter Jr. During their married life, they lived in many parts of the Southeast, finally settling in Chattanooga in 1964..
Betty was an active member of Brainerd United Methodist Church for 40 years. She was a member of Friendship Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and served in a variety of volunteer capacities: greeter, receptionist, librarian, Sunday school teacher, VBS, Summerfest, etc..
Betty was also active in the community, where she touched many lives. She volunteered at Contact Counseling Services for many years..
Her love and compassion for children led her to work at Chambliss Children’s Home and later to advocate for those children as an adviser to the Juvenile Court..
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances McLellan of Dalton, and a brother, John McLellan Jr. of Leeds, Ala..
Survivors include her children and their families, Margaret Carter Altom and husband, Doug, Clayton and Cole Altom of San Angelo, Texas, and Kelsey Altom Kling and husband, Steve, of Austin, Texas, Frances Carter Jones, Jeremy and Jessica Jones of Johnson City, Tenn., Albert Carter Jr. and wife, Lara, Ashley, Katie and Stuart Carter of Richmond, Ky., John Carter and wife, Krissy, and Kaylin Carter, of Greenville, N.C. She also is survived by a sister, Frances "Bitsy" McFarland and her husband, Stuart, of Dalton, Ga.; a brother, Bill McLellan and his wife, Mary, of Charleston, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Barbara McLellan Estes and her husband, Hilton, of Leeds, Ala.; along with many nieces and nephews..
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Brainerd United Methodist Church..
Memorial contributions may be made to Contact Counseling Services, Chambliss Children’s Home or Brainerd United Methodist Church..
Local arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel..
