CRITICALLY INJURED WHEN TIRE EXPLODES
Frank Thomas Still Unconscious This Afternoon
Frank Thomas, age 33, injured early this morning when a truck tire blew a rim in his face, was said to be in an "expremely serious" condition this afternoon. Hospital attendants said he had not regained consciousness since the accident.
Thomas suffered a badly fractured skull just above the left eye when his face was tore open by the rim of a tire. He was changing the tire on the truck of Hall Edwards of Sterling, Colo., when the accident occurred.
Reports said Thomas had just completed changing the tire and was putting the rim in place when a ring which holds the tire blew off. The resulting explosion was heard for several blocks.
RIM HIT FACE
One of the rims struck Thomas across the face, gashing it open from forehead to cheek. Other pieces of the tire assembly also struck him about the face, inflicting serious cuts.
While doctors were unable to make X-rays, it was not believed he suffered internal injuries. He was rushed to the General hospital, where he remained critical this afternoon.
The accident occurred at Thomas' tire shop in the 100 block of West Twelfth street.
KICKED TIRE
Hall Edwards, whose truck Thomas was working on, was standing within three feet of Thomas but was uninjured. Hall said Thomas had just put the tire in place and had given it a kick with his foot when the explosion occurred.
Thomas was stooped beside the tire when it blew out, and took the entire force of the explosion in his face.
William Sivits, father-in-law of the injured man, arrived at the accident scene within minutes and administered artificial respiration until Thomas arrived at the hospital. Thomas lost considerable blood from the deep wounds before he was taken to the hospital.
Thomas is married and has six children -- five boys and a girl.
