Elizabeth Catherine "Eliza or Catherine" DeVault1,2,3,4,5,6,7
F, #13360, b. 29 December 1846, d. 17 September 1941
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Elizabeth Catherine "Eliza or Catherine" DeVault was born on 29 December 1846 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.8,9 She was born in 1847 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1,2 She and Royston "Rice" Hicks were married on 25 August 1868 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.10 She died on 17 September 1941, at age 94.9 She was buried in Cross Cemetery, Pines Flats, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.9 Elizabeth Catherine "Eliza or Catherine" DeVault was also known as Eliza. She had reference number 13628. She resided in Catherine and husband were living next door to her parents in 1870.11,8 She was enumerated on the census in Tennessee, Sullivan Co., (1850 - 1880, 1900.) In early census records Elizabeth Catherine DeVault was referred to as Elizabeth or Eliza. On her marriage record she is listed as "Eliza C." Several people recall her as Aunt Catherine. In later census records she is shown as "E. Catherine" or just "Catherine."
Samuel Pierce DeVault notes (in his father's book on the DeVault genealogy) that a daughter of Henry and Matilda (Weaver) Davault married Rice Hicks. This daughter was Catherine and she somehow came into ownership of her father's farm (this farm must have been part of Gabriel's farm). After her husband died, Catherine lived with her nephew, Royston Hicks "Rice" Cross and his family. At some point she transferred ownership of the farm to Rice Cross. Samuel said he got this information from Hugh Cross, a brother of Rice Cross.
In June of 2004 I spoke with Kyle Cross, eldest son of Rice Cross. Kyle said his father's farm was on Rice Cross Road, bordered the Holston River and was 125 acres in size.
