Elizabeth Manser lists a daughter Barbara in addition to those listed. She sas that Barbara took care of her parents in their old age and is mentioned in John Fitz's will. This is a bit of a mystery as no Barbara appears in any census records and all six of John's and Alice's children are accounted for.

Family 2: Mary Ann Unknown

SonJacob G. Davault (b. between 1855 and 1860)
SonWilliam L. Davault (b. between 1855 and 1860)

BASIC FACTS

Jacob Davault was born in 1795 in York Co., Pennsylvania.3,4 He was born about 1796 in York Co., Pennsylvania.5,6 He and Mary "Polly" Hodges were married on 7 October 1815 in Washington Co., Tennessee.7,6,8 He and Mary Ann Unknown were married after 1855. He died in 1855, at age ~60.3 He died in 1867, at age ~72, in Maries Co., Missouri.6,4 He was buried.
Jacob Davault had reference number 632. He resided in York Co., Pennsylvania; Washington Co., Tennessee (1797); Sullivan Co., Tennessee (1800); Crawford Co., Missouri (abt 1836.)8 He was a Blacksmith (1850.)2 He was enumerated on the census in Crawford County, Missouri (1850.) Newland DeVault said all of Jacob's children were born in Tennessee. He went on to say that in 1837 the family moved to Missouri after the youngest child, Mary, was born. This is slightly in error. My review of the census records shows that the Mary was born in Missouri. Even Newland's own records show that Jacob was operating in Missouri by July of 1836.

Jacob settled in Crawford County, Missouri with his family and with his younger brother John, John's wife and their son Samuel. (John and family were to soon move on to Clark County, Missouri.)
Court records show that Jacob and his son Samuel, then 19 years old, purchased land in July of 1836 -- 80 acres at $1.25 per acre and in December of 1837 he purchased and additional 40 acres at the same price.
The 1850 Census lists Jacob, his first wife Mary, son James and daugher Mary. In the associated slave schedule Jacob is identified as the owner of two Negro children, a girl age 8 and a boy age 5. These two children are named in later court records.
In 1843 Jacob's son Rolin died. He was buried in Wash Cemetery, Red Bird, Gasconade County, Missouri. It is not known why this cemetery was selected, however, over the next forty years other family members would also be buried in Wash Cemetery. Jacob's son James died in June of 1850, a couple of months after the 1850 Census was taken. He was buried in Wash Cemetery. In 1855 Jacob's wife Mary died. She, too, was buried in Wash Cemetery.
Very little is known about Jacob's second wife, also a Mary. Jacob and the second Mary bought other tracts and at one time owned 280 acres.
The following are some of the court records concern Jacob and his misfortune in his land deals. The data are sketchy and incomplete.
1) December 7, 1855: A small parcel of land is sold to Ephrain Coleman for $70.00. It is signed only by Jacob as his wife Mary had died earlier in the year.
2) September 10, 1860: A lengthy indenture from Jacob Davault to his son, John Davault, trustee for the two young children of Jacob by his second wife, until they become of age. The two children are Jacob G. (Gabriel ?) and William L. Davault. This indenture concerns a farm of 280 acres, buildings, household goods and two Negro slaves, "one Negro girl named Diana, age 17, and one Negro boy named Dick Dick, age 16." These are likely the two Negro children that appeared in the 1850 census with Jacob and his first wife.
3) December 1863: It seemed that Jacob, prior to 1863, had co-signed a note for someone and that Jacob had to make good on the note. His land, at least part of it, was sold at a sheriff's sale -- 291 acres sold in accordance with a judgement that was rendered in April of that year. He received the sum of $2500.00 for the sale. The deed was signed by Jacob and his second wife, Mary Ann.
4) March 1867: The land mentioned in Item #3 was sold to Cor. P. Allen. In 1867, Allen had the living children of Jacob Davault sign a quit-claim deed stating that they had no interest in the property. The children signing were Mary Southard, Samuel Davault, Juliana Kinkaid, Susanna Miller and John Davault. Three of Jacob's children, Rolin (died in 1843), James (died in 1850) and Rhoda (died about 1852) did not sign the quit-claim deed. (Newland did not mention Jacob Jr. He, too, may have died before 1867.)
5) May 18 1869: Maries County, Missouri Deed Book 2, pages 610 - 612. William Southard, administrator of the estate of James Moreland, deceased to Jacob Davault, document to administer deed signed 18 May 1869, recorded 24 March 1893. Land description: SW qtr. of NW qtr. and NW qtr. of SW qtr. of Sec. 17, Twp. 39, R7W, 80 acres, appraised by John Geisler, G. W. Shinkle and Jesse Williamson. Southard stated that the original 1867 court records ordering sale of estate were destroyed by fire and a substitute order was made by the court in 1869. (The John Geisler mentioned in this record is a descendant of the Gieslers that lived next to Jacob's parents in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Some of the Gieslers migrated to Missouri at about the same time as Jacob and John Davault.)
6) March 28, 1872: Maries County, Missouri Deed Book 2, page 610. John W. Shinkle and Rebecca Shinkle, his wife to Jacob Davault, quit claim deed. Land description is the same as Item #5.
7) October 1911: This indenture, made 44 years after Jacob's children signed the quit-claim deed in Item #4, states that Jacob and all his children are dead. The action was intended to create a "perfect title by limitation." A Mr. Otto Neidert had been holding the land for over 30 years and was now attempting to clear the title. Part of this land was the same land that was held in trust for Jacob's children in Item #2. This record lists the names of 38 grandchildren. The grandchildren are divided into two parts: those living in the state of Missouri and those that were non-residents.

Despite all these court records we do not know what became of Jacob, his second wife nor their two children.

This is very uncommon, but was the case here. The biography of David Latture (see David's notes) clearly confirms this. Also, I looked at the 1840 Census and it shows that Samuel and Catherine had children in each of the appropriate age brackets.

GRAVE MARKER

HENRY DAVAULT
1807 -- 1876.
In the genealogy prepared by Patricia (Hervey) Schneider she lists an additional child, John DeVault, born in 1837. There is a gap in the children's ages between 1836 and 1841. If there was a son born between 1837 and 1841, he probably died young. There is some evidence of this because a male child born during this period appears in the 1840 or 1850 Census records. The other children that died young all have nice stones in Cross Cemetery. There is no stone for a John DeVault in Cross Cemetery. Since I have not been able to find other evidence to confirm this son, I have not included him in the list.
For a time, early in their marriage, Henry and Matilda lived in Washington County, Indiana with Henry's uncle, Henry Dawalt. That explains how their youngest son, Michael, came to be born in Indiana.

BASIC FACTS

Henry Keefhaver was born about 1803 in Washington, Co., Tennessee.4,5,6 He and Elizabeth "Betsy" Galloway were married in 1821.6 He died between November 1850 and 3 March 1851 in Washington Co., Tennessee.4,6
Henry Keefhaver was also known as Henry Keefauver.2 He had reference number 644. He was a Farmer (1850.)1 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1830, 1850.) It appears that Henry and his descendants used the "Keefhaver" spelling.

From Newland DeVault's report:
"Henry and wife Elizabeth Galloway lived on a portion of his father's farm until his death. The exact date is not known. Henry was listed in the census of 1850, taken in November. In his father's will, made out and signed March 3, 1851, Henry's late death is noted. So Henry died between November of 1850 and March 3, 1851. Henry's father's will states that Henry's brother, Nicholas Keefauver, Jr., was to purchase for $400.00 that portion of the farm upon which Henry had lived, and the money was to be divided amongst Henry's heirs.
Joseph Crouch, Henry's brother-in-law, became the guardian of Henry's minor heirs: Elbert, Louise, Henry and Samuel. Nicholas' estate was finally settled on August 31, 1868. The settlement document is several pages long. Elbert received $532.17; Louise $505.13; Samuel $586.88 and Henry $574.97. The share for Catherine, the wife of William Love, was $126.09. The total assets being $2,951.15, of which $1,000.00 was their interest in the sale of slaves which occurred October 18, 1854."

Newland went on to say that "An old genealogy states that most of the descendants of Henry Keefauver moved west." This appears to be the case. After her husband's death, Elizabeth and several children moved to Macoupin County, Illinois. In the 1870s some of the children were in Lawrence County, Missouri. By the early 1900s, son Samuel and several of John's children had moved to Linn County, Oregon.

Henry died without a will, however, there was a provision in his father's will that the slaves should not be sold, but distributed amongst the family members. After Nicholas' death, apparently there was a disagreement as to how Henry's share of the slaves should be divided amongst Henry's children. In September of 1854, five of Henry's children petitioned the court in Washington County, Tennessee to allow the slaves to be sold and the proceeds distributed to Henry's heirs. This document, called "The Petition to Sell Slaves" resides at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, California.
Henry and all but two of his children seemed to have died young. Daughter Louisa died of tuberculosis and I suspect that the other children that died young also had TB.

BASIC FACTS

Elizabeth "Betsy" Galloway was born in 1805 in Tennessee.1 She and Henry Keefhaver were married in 1821.6 She died after 1860 in Illinois.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Galloway had reference number 645. She was a Farmer (1860.)3 She was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1830, 1850); Macoupin County, Illinois (1860.) After her husband's death, Elizabeth, along with her six youngest children, moved to Macoupin County, Illinois. She is shown there in the 1860 Census. Daughter Louisa died in 1860 due to tuberculosis. Five of Elizabeth's other children also died young. I suspect they all had TB and, at least part of the reason for the move, was to reach a healther climate. Three of the children are buried in Range Cemetery, south of Palmyra, Macoupin County, Illinois. Try as I might, I have not been able to find Elizabeth's grave.
I have decided to show Elizabeth as a child of Thomas Galloway. Here is my thinking. I have always thought it strange that widowed Elizabeth and her young children would attempt the long journey from East Tennessee to Macoupin County, Illinois. It is true that a number of relatives and neighbors made the move at about the same time and she might have traveled with them. However, if Elizabeth had an older brother that was moving to Illinois, she probably would have had the confidence that if her family traveled with his, they could make the trip safely. It turns out that Daniel Galloway, a known son of Thomas Galloway, and born a few years before Elizabeth, did make the trip. We know that Daniel and Elizabeth did not live far apart in Illinois as both families have members buried in the Range Cemetery. There is one other point. If you look at most genealogies that include Thomas Galloway and his children, you will find a gap in the birth years of Thomas' children around the year 1805, the year Elizabeth was born. And, finally, in both the 1830 and 1840 Censuses, the families of Daniel Galloway and Henry Keefhaver (with wife Elizabeth Galloway) were living close to each other. So I am making the leap and guessing that Daniel and Elizabeth were siblings, thus making Elizabeth a daughter of Thomas Galloway.
Henry and all but two of his children seemed to have died young. Daughter Louisa died of tuberculosis and I suspect that the other children that died young also had TB.

KEEFAUVER FARM - James Barnes Keefauver

Upon purchasing 186 acres in 1803, Nicolas and Dicey Keefauver established the Keefauver Farm five miles northwest of Jonesboro in the 14th District of Washington County. Owning an undetermined number of slaves, Keefauver managed a farm that produced corn, wheat and livestock. His crops and commodities were always profitable, which encouraged Keefauver to expand the farm to over 370 acres by 1850.
Nicholas was the father of two sons to whom he willed the property in 1879. Abraham Keefauver’s share totaled 189 acres on which he grew corn and wheat while raising livestock. The land has passed through the Keefauver family throughout the twentieth century. The present owner is James Barnes Keefauver, who acquired title to 127 acres in 1967. The great great grandson of the founder, Jim raises beef cattle, tobacco and corn.

Note: The above note was written by James Barnes Keefauver, great-great-great-grandson of Johann Nicholas Keefauver. There are a couple of errors in the note. The farm was originally purchased by Johann Nicholas Keefauver (Nicholas, Sr.) and wife, Catherine (DeWald) Keefauver, not their son, Nicholas, Jr. and his wife, Dicey. It was Nicholas Jr. that was the father of William Shelton "Shelton" Keefauver and Abraham Keefauver, the two sons that inherited Nicholas, Jr.'s farm.

BASIC FACTS

David Kitzmiller was born on 7 October 1799 in Hanover, York Co., Pennsylvania.5 He was born on 11 October 1799 in Hanover, York Co., Pennsylvania.6 He was born on 11 October 1799 in Maryland.4 He and Elizabeth "Eliza" Hughes were married on 29 November 1821 in Washington Co., Tennessee.5,7 He and Mary Unknown were married on 12 November 1890.5,8 He died on 3 July 1895, at age 95, in Fordtown, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6,5 He was buried in Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington Co., Tennessee (V.)6
David Kitzmiller had reference number 648. He was a Hog raiser; farmer (1850 - 1870.)5,3,4 He resided in Gray's Station, Washington Co., Tennessee (constructed a 2 1/2 story home.)5 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850 - 1870.) He was affiliated with Member of the Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church for over 50 years.2 David Kitzmiller was the first child born to Martin and Mary Elizabeth (DeWald) Kitzmiller and the only one of their children to be born in Pennsylvania. On November 29, 1821 he married Elizabeth Hughes. Elizabeth's brother, Robert Hughes, would soon marry Elizabeth Davault, a cousin of David Kitzmiller.

In 1825, David and Eliza Kitzmiller built an elegant house at Gray Station. It was a huge house of eight rooms with an ell containing at least four additional rooms. There was a fireplace in every room. On one side of the house was a living room down stairs and a large ballroom upstairs. These rooms each had two fireplaces. The walls of the ballroom were covered with wallpaper from France with the "fleur de lis" in gold. The fireplace mantles were all hand carved - the work being done in Knoxville, Tennessee. The inside door and window casings were likewise hand carved. At one time it was considered the finest home west of Roanoke, Virginia. David was a confederate sympathizer and furnished the Confederate Army with pork. He went bankrupt after the Civil War due to the collapse of Confederate money.
On the back of an old photograph of the home, it says that the home was sold to the Martin Luther Roller and his wife, Elizabeth (Pearce) Roller. (Washington County records show the house was sold to the Rollers on February 1, 1869.) In 1895 the house was sold to Jimmy Gray and called "Gray Mansion." The house was razed in 1970 and it is said that the brick was taken to Knoxville where three houses were built from the brick. There is a photo of the David Kitzmiller House on page 151 of "History of Washington County Tennessee - 1988.

It is not known whether or not all of David's children were married in this house. Fred Kitzmiller, a great-grandson of David Kitzmiller, reported that there was a double wedding in the house on April 20 1848. The couples were reported to be David's daughter, Nancy Kitzmiller who married Samuel DeVault and his daughter Julia Kitzmiller who married Peter Yoakley. This is apparently incorrect as Julia would only have been ten years old at the time.

The following information is from the Robert Bell Collection, East Tennessee State University, Archives of Appalachia, Box 70295, Johnson City, TN 37614-0138 (They have nine photographs of the Gray Mansion.)

The Gray Mansion was built by David Kitzmiller with slave labor, using bricks made on the grounds. It was completed in 1828. It was located on the northwest side of Gray behind the fairgrounds. The Kitzmiller mansion was the center of a typical southern plantation complete with its own slave house, central kitchen, two ice-cold springs to furnish water, and a smokehouse. A stagecoach route from Knoxville, Tennessee to Abingdon, Virginia began at the mansion's side entrance.
The Kitzmiller house was decorated in bold colors. Pink went on the woodwork of the ballroom, chair railing, and shutters. The double mantels in the ballroom were black, and the room had an orchestra gallery. The library was done in shades of blue-green. One bedroom, marbled in Dutch blue to the molding, had bright blue woodwork. In the drawing room were 14 kt. gold flowers drawn on fabric-backed paper.
David Kitzmiller, age of 96, died a man of very modest means. He was living in a log cabin on Ford Creek. He was in poor circumstances because his cash had been of worthless Confederate currency, and he had been forced to sell his mansion and some of his property to pay his taxes in 1860. The house was purchased by the Roller family of Kingsport.
In 1894 James Gray, "Uncle Jimmy", bought the Roller House and 300 acres of land for $40,000. Late in life he married a widow, Mrs. Vertie Boreing Irvin Gray, who had one son and two daughters. Mrs. Gray's parents were Peter and Mary DeVault Boreing. Mary DeVault Boreing was a granddaughter of David Kitzmiller who built the mansion. Therefore, one relative lived and died in the old home place. After Vertie Gray's death, the mansion went to John T. Bickley and then to Carolyn Craven of Knoxville and Dr. Sam Bickley of North Carolina (children of John T. Bickley).
The old home was rented for years, and then it fell into a sad state and was torn down in the late 1960's. Mrs. Craven took the elegant doorway, some mantels, and hand-hewn trim to Knoxville for her home overlooking the Tennessee River.

The family of David Kitzmiller is closely associated with the Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, of which he was a member for over 50 years - this being the first Baptist Church in Tennessee. David and Elizabeth are buried in the church cemetery, also his parents, Martin and Mary (DeWald) Kitzmiller, also his daughter Nancy and her husband Samuel DeVault, as well as others of the family. This is the old cemetery. The church is no longer standing - the site of the church building is marked by a State Monument. In 1925 a new Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church was built in the community of Gray. A second Buffalo Ridge Church Cemetery was established adjoining the second church. This second church is now a funeral home. In the Chapel of this second church one may still see the glass stained windows with the names of David Kitzmiller, Dr. R. C. Kitzmiller, Mrs. Kitzmiller and S. E. Edwards and Mary Kitzmiller Edwards. A third Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church has recently been built in Gray but there is no cemetery around the third church. There are descendants of Henry Dewald buried in both cemeteries.

Up to and including the Civil War, David prospered - a large stock trader and farmer, supplying the Confederates with meat. At the close of the Civil War (according to Fred Kitzmiller who, in 1968, gave this information to Newland DeVault), David had $30,000.00 in Confederate money in his pocket, which was then worthless, this practically ruining him. Later he divided the farm into three parts of 300 acres each, keeping one part. At one time he had owned 1200 acres. After the Civil War there was a note entered into the court records. It read, "David Kitzmiller is indebted to Peter Yoakley and Samuel Backman, his sons in law, for $1,200.00.

OBITUARY - Bristol Harold Courier, July 6, 1895

David Kitzmiller, of near Fordtown, died on the 3rd inst., in the 97th year of his age. He had been a member of the Baptist church at Buffalo Ridge perhaps 75 years. He was the father of Rev. David Kitzmiller of Elizabethton, and Mertie Kitzmiller, who resides in the State of Washington.

OBITUARY #2 - July 11, 1895

A noted nonagenarian who sleeps the sleep of death.
David Kitzmiller died at his home near Fordtown Tenn last Thursday, July 3, 1895. He was at the time of his death the oldest citizen in the County, being 96 years old, and in this natural condition he passed away more from bieng worn out by the blighting hand of time than from disease which had apparently come upon him.
Being among the first settlers of the County, such a life as he had just closed is always more or less filled with interesting romance.
David Kitzmiller was born in Pa. - came to this County as a young man [actually, he came when he was about a year old]. He was a highly respectable citizen and raised a good family of children, four of whom are yet living; he was widely regarded as one of the best and most extensive farmers and stock raisers in all the State. His farming lands numbered 1200 acres and his frugality made him immensely rich besides. In the prime of his days it was the custom to drive stock to market, and at one time he took to S. Carolina 1800 head of hogs. A story is told illustrating the amount of money he had, which says that after returning from one of his stock markets, the gold, when poured from a bag, heaped upon and ran off a table three feet square. After all this, his generosity, in his later days, left him only in moderate circumstances.
About two months ago [May 1895] a photograph was taken of him and his descendants, his daughter, Mrs Samuel DeVault and husband, his Granddaughter, Mrs Peter Boring and husband, his grandson, Great, Sam I Boring and wife; and his GR GR Grandchild, the little daughter of the latter couple. [This photo is preserved on microfilm at the Nashville (Tennessee) State Library.]
Mr Kitzmiller married a second time in his 92 year, and his companion, a Mrs Brown, was only seven years his junior.
He has been a member of the Baptist Church from the time of his youth. But his career is closed and he sleeps besides the marble that marks the dust from "lips he had pressed in their bloom" and where other names he loved to hear have been carved for many years on the tomb.

Story told to Newland DeVault by Frederick Russell DeVault

STONE HOUSE B

John's father built a home for them on part of his large farm. The home, built of stone, became known as "Stone House B" to distinguish it from the parents' home which became known as "Stone House A."
Stone House B was a gem of a home. When compared with other DeVault-Kitzmiller homes, it is small and lacks the setting of the other homes. But though it lacks the gracefullness of Valentine Davault's old home overlooking the Watauga River, the solid dependability of Frederick Davault's old Tavern in Leesburg and the beautiful setting of Stone House A, it has a beauty all of its own. This is primarly due to the fact that it was the home of that remarkable woman, Louise (DeWald) Kitzmiller, who gave us the first genealogy of the family of her grandfather, Henry Dewald of York County, Pennsylvania.
The house is a story and a half high. There were four large rooms on the lower floor and three rooms above. In addition, under the rafters, extending the entire length of the house on both sides were two long, narrow rooms with built in shelves. The main hall of the home is seven feet wide, it has high ceilings and very low doors. In some of the rooms below, small folding doors, less than two feet wide were used. Very similar doors were used in Jefferson's home in Monticello. These doors were taken down and stored in the second floor. Above the fireplaces are fine examples of 18th century hand-carved mantles. The house was plastered both upstairs and down. Upstairs, in a place where some of the plaster had come off, one can see the handmade laths of various widths, lengths and thicknesses. In some of the plaster, animal hair can be seen which was used to strengthen the plaster. The front porch is supported by eight hand-carved posts and all around the top of the porch delecate work was done by hand. The same kind of work as found on the porch of Frederick's Tavern and the old porch that was attached to the side of Valentine's home.
Of the homes listed in the "1957 Historical Sites and Homes, Pioneer Pilgrimage," six of those listed in Washington County were DeVault/Kitzmiller homes, including the Stone Houses A and B.

DEC. 3, 1896.
Newland DeVault, in his report, lists a James M. Hodges (1827-1892) as the first child of Jimmie and Polly Hodges. It appears from the information that Newland provided that this is really Joseph M. Hodges, son of Edmond Hodges and Sarah McCroskey. Missing from Newland's list of children is John Kitzmiller Hodges. Several genealogies list John Kitzmiller Hodges as the first child of Jimmie and Polly Hodges. Newland also lists a son, Richard, born in 1838. So far I have not found any corroborating evidence. This includes the 1840 Census that matches the males correctly without Richard. I have deleted Richard from the list.
Apparently Jimmie and Polly had two daughters named Hannah. The first only lived a couple of years and is buried at the Allison-Boring-Hodges Cemetery. The second Hannah was the first child born after the first Hannah died.
