Paul Franson Ends 43-Year Army Career
Top Guard Instructor Veteran Of Two Wars And Mexican Campaign
Up Through Ranks
Former Chief Of Staff For 5th Division Says Gen. Patton Was Tops
Col. Paul O. Franson, senior Army instructor for the Alabama National Guard, will retire from active duty today.
He is a veteran of 43 years of Army service, having risen from buck private to chief of staff of the 5th Division of Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.'s Third Army in Europe during World War II.
Col. Franson, a native of Montgomery, hit the Normandy beaches with his division shortly after D-Day, in early July, 1944, and saw the battle against the Nazis from a front line position, through France and across Germany.
During the months of combat Franson often saw Patton daily, and became familiar with many top-ranking figures of the war in Europe - Generals Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and Britain's Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery among them.
Russian Award
Among many decorations won by Col. Franson is one given him by Soviet Russia after the 5th Division met the Russian armies at a point on the Austria-Czechoslovakian frontier.
Joining the Army as a private of the 2nd Infantry (Montgomery True Blues) May 5, 1905, he served with the Alabama Brigade on the Mexican Border and with the 31st (Dixie) Division during World War I.
Named Chief of Staff of the 5th Division April 30, 1942, Col. Franson was quickly shipped, with that division overseas, to Iceland, Northern Ireland and England.
Under Fire
As part of Patton's Third Army the 5th Division came under fire almost immediately they landed in France for the invasion.
They took part in the fierce fighting around St. Lo before driving across the Cherbourg Peninsular (sic) to cut off the German garrison at that French port from their communications with the German army.
"At that time Montgomery (Field Marshal Montgomery) and his British troops were magnificently withstanding several German heavy panzer divisions in the nearby Caen area," Franson said. He next described heavy battles in the Caumont area followed by a rapid thrust south of Rennes, and eastward through Angers, across the Seine and past Reims only to run out of gas and come to a full stop before Verdun.
Lost Chance
"This stop robbed us of the chance of taking the fortress of Metz, which had almost been evacuated by the retreating Germans," Franson said.
Col. Franson, as one of Patton's chiefs of staff, shares Patton's criticism about the way the Supreme Command failed to send the Third Army the gas they urgently needed, at Verdun.
"The Germans, seeing us gasless, re-fortified Metz and it took us months and cost us thousands of lives later to capture it," Franson states. "With gas we could have taken Metz. We were ready to go ahead and needed it more than other Armies which were stalled."
Soon after Metz had been taken, the 5th Division was detached from Patton's command and sent to help the hard-pressed First Army then facing the famous German 1944 attack in the snow shrouded hills of the Ardennes Forest. This was the "Battle of the Bulge" in the Bastogne area near Luxembourg.
Rejoining the Third Army the 5th "secretly" crossed the Rhine March 23, 1945 at Oppenheim, between Mainz and Mannheim and stormed Frankfort. This crossing of the river was done without artillery preparation.
The 5th's drive across Europe came to its final stop on its prearranged "deadline" in the area of a small Austrian town called Grafenau, near the Czechoslovak frontier.
Prefer U. S. Lines
"The oncoming Russians were pushing thousands of Germans towards us" Franson says, "and as a matter of fact most of these Germans were trying to get to us and behind our lines to escape the Russians." Franson said "our orders were, however to stop these Germans because they were considered Russian prisoners, so we closed our lines tight to stop them coming through." Franson said the thousands of defeated Germans were, therefore, squeezed in a narrow corridor between the American and Russian front lines.
Col. Franson received his Soviet decoration, the Order of the Red Star, a few days after this incident "in one of the most amazing investitures I have ever seen," he said.
The Russians sent for a copy of the American national anthem by 'plane and a band of their professional musicians played it that same night at the ceremony "about as well as I have ever heard it played," he said.
Several other officers received Soviet awards, flying into the Russian area, across the German "prison-camp corridor" for it. "They've put on more dog' for an investiture than any other Army I know," Franson said. "with the firing of guns, rockets, flares, machine guns, and everything else that had around."
Vodka and Food
Franson then described a typical Russian dinner which ended the ceremonies, with vodka and plenty to eat.
Franson said the "Russians soldiers all seemed very young - about 23 or 24 - and very smart and alert."
These are some of Franson's observations on famous generals:
Eisenhower - "A good diplomatic general."
Bradley - "A fine fighting general. He is the studious type. He does not say very much, but is the brain power behind strategic planning. When he speaks, what he says is d--- good."
Montgomery - "A first-rate soldier. He spoke to a large group of us senior officers a few weeks before the invasion. He lectured us one whole day on all he had learned from his successful fight against the Germans in Africa. He knew his stuff and is full of personality and driving power."
Patton His Idol
But Patton is the Colonel's idol. In his room he has picture of the General and also a picture of Patton's grave. "He was a great leader - and a driver," Franson says. "He was a 'soldier's general' visiting the front line almost daily on many occasions, and seeing for himself. Quite often he did not use profanity. Often he used it only as part of an 'act'. He was a great showman. His clothes and leather were always immaculate. He was always pushing onward."
Col. Franson said that Patton was "highly-strung" which was probably the reason for the GI face-slapping incident earlier in Italy. "He and just come from battle; his outfit's nose was bloody" Franson said, and he had seen his men with their stomachs out, their legs off, bleeding on the battle fields, and then saw others who were psycho - many of them, wards full of them, unscratched, but mentally sick - afraid and unnerved. Something probably snapped for a few minutes inside that highly-strung, power-driven, complex man which was Patton and he committed the mistake he later so bitterly regretted," Franson said.
Franson agreed that it was "the diplomatic general" Eisenhower, who "saved" Patton and kept him after this incident for his later victorious drive across Europe.
Until a permanent successor to Col. Franson is appointed, Col. L. E. Toole, now stationed in Birmingham, will assume the temporary duties of Chief Instructor to the Guard," the Military Department announced.
Col. Franson states that he intends to continue living in Montgomery during his retirement.
In 2005, Colonel Franson's medals were listed at auction:

fled for all day
Dear M R & Butch,
Sorry this took so long. This material I got from Carol & added to it. Also, we are leaving Wednesday on a 10 day cruse and I wanted to get something to you!
My father, myself and my brother-in-law Ernest were or are retired US Army Colonels, as is Ernest’s brother. His father retired as a Lt. Col. He graduated from the Citadel in Charleston. My son-in-law graduated from Geo. Washington in D.C. My son Paul graduated from Davidson. My daughter Patty will graduate in 1984 from U. of Ala. at Huntsville, where her son Michael graduated before enrolling at Columbia Seminary. By the way, he is on a two month exchange in Jamaica where he is one of two whites attending the Protestant Seminary. His letters indicate it is at least different!! Patty’s youngest is in his first year at Vanderbilt on a Navy ROTC Scholarship and is doing great. Her other one just enlisted in the Navy – usual example of high school football hero not adjusting to hard studying.
Carol’s daughter Judie graduated from Converse in S.C. and her son Jon from U. of Texas. He is Captain in Army.
Almost forgot. Our daughter Susan graduated from Fla. Presbyterian (now Eckerd) and has masters from U. of So. Fla. Kay & Carol went to Ala & Converse but decided getting married was easier than graduating.
I taught at Manatee J.C. for 16 years after retiring from army with 23 years service.
At Augusta Hospital a black Hindoo doctor told me nothing I didn’t know about my foot. I’ll have to get it cut again when it gets to where I can’t stand it. However my excellent surgeon will do it, not some young gools!
Regards, Paul.

LETTER FROM MARY RUSSELL (DEVAULT) BUTCHER TO DOUGLAS DEVAULT ROSEBOROUGH AND WIFE
D.D. - Babs
I am reduced to using this to write on. Jane said Betty Lou called and said you were riding in a brand new Cadillac. If so, please forgive me for not knowing and I'll forgive you for not taking my picture in it. Could have used for Xmas cards.
Jane asked me what the other D in your name was. I was little and asked your mother about Uncle Doug's and she said it was Douglas Dearie.
Is it true Mary Lee has a built in alarm clock? And can program it to awaken her at any time?
Just as soon as I can, I'll Zerox Leesburg History. Jane, too, wants you to straighten out some confusing family matters. D.D. that clock in bar room is not Daddy's clock. (I did not lie on purpose.) Jane has his and it's much more delicately fashioned. And don't tell her she'll kill me, her birthday is 11-15-19. She was just past two and recovering from bronical (Sp?) pneumonia so Daddy & Mama could come down on train for one day for Aunt Mary's wedding. And who ever put down Mama's birthday wrong? She & Uncle Up born same year. Oct 22, 1884, Mama's and Uncle Up 3-9-1884 (Grandpa's Bible). And Aunt Mary & Uncle Doug's wedding, 12-28-1921.
Please now D.D. Please if that's wrong correct me.
Was over home one night when census taker had come back to finish his job. And you never heard anything come up to it. Dad would run back to kitchen asking Mama about our ages, etc and she'd make up something trying to shove off C.T.
I'll quit now. Arm is broken writing sympathy cards. Butch's sister at Old Hickory died. And they have a big family connection. I had only Paralyzed Veterans cards to use. Thank you again for everything: coming by; my supper; papers; Bab's patience and hauling up garbage. Love Always, Your idiot Tennessee Cousin.

Owners of the DeVault Inn and Tavern: The DeVault Inn and Tavern was built by Frederick Davault (as he spelled his name). The work was completed in 1822. After Frederick's death, the Inn and Tavern was inherited by his son, John DeVault. John built a home across the street and moved his family there. John sold the Tavern to Jacob Fetter. Mr. Fetter could not pay for it so John took the Tavern back and gave Jacob Fetter land on Lovers Lane. John's son, Frederick Russell DeVault (generally known as Russell), inherited the Tavern from his father and brother, John Baker DeVault.
Many of our family were farmers and cattlemen; some were prominent preachers, evangelists and college and university professors; and some were (and are now) physicians and surgeons, teaching and practicing at the University of Virginia, at Mayo and as family doctors. Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander (whose great-great-grandmother, Louisa DeVault Rankin, daughter of Frederick Davault) was also Secretary of Education in President Bush's cabinet.

Joseph A. Duncan1
M, #510, b. 1 June 1815, d. 15 May 1887
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Joseph A. Duncan was born on 1 June 1815 in Washington Co., Tennessee.2,3 He and Elizabeth DaVault were married on 13 October 1842.2,4 He and Martha E. F. Carpenter were married in May 1853.2 He died on 15 May 1887, at age 71.5,6 He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.5 He was buried in Fullens Depot.2 Joseph A. Duncan had reference number 511. He was In the mercantile business in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his brother, James W. Duncan.1 He was enumerated on the census in Cooke Co., Tennessee (1850.) Joseph was often called "Joseph Jr." even though he seems to be the third Joseph in a row.
After Elizabeth died, Joseph married Martha E. F. Carpenter. They had seven children.
Newland DeVault reported that Joseph Duncan was buried at Fullens Depot. This is incorrect, Joseph and family are buried in the plot purchased by his brother, James W. Duncan for James' first wife, Mary Ann (Davault) Duncan at Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, North Carolina. However, a hand-written Duncan family record, kept in a Walker family Bible, says that Joseph died at Fullens Depot in Greene County. It may be that he died while on a visit to Greene County and his body was taken back to North Carolina and buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Another possibility is that the Bible record is confusing Joseph Duncan with his brother, James W. Duncan. James is buried at the Chuckey Methodist Episcopal Church in Greene County. This church is located very near Fullens Depot.
Note: The Walker Family Bible may have belonged to Henry Walker, husband of Hester Jane Duncan. This would possibly explain why a Duncan family record was placed in the Walker Bible.

BRUMIT FARM - Roy R. Brumit, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fulmer Brumit, Verbena P. Brumit
In 1819, John and Elizabeth Fulmer established the Brumit family farm when they acquired 135 acres of land ten miles northeast of Jonesboro. The Fulmers, farmers of corn and wheat, raised three children and their son George inherited a farm of 123 acres in 1883. The land passed into the hands of the founders’ grandson John W. Fulmer fourteen years later.
John and Trephenia Ann Fulmer were the parents of five daughters. When the property transferred to Pearl Fulmer Whittaker, Verbena Brumit and Roy R. Brumit in 1922, it passed out of the Fulmer family name. These were difficult times for farmers throughout East Tennessee. The owners tried new crops, such as tobacco and milk products. They also sold 55 acres of land.
In 1974, the current generation of Brumits inherited the farm. Two years later, Fred and Robert F. Brumit worked the property, producing corn, wheat, hay and beef cattle.
