Guerrant to be honored
The Rev. William (Will or Bill) Guerrant, retired campus minister of Kansas State University, will be honored Sunday for his 90th birthday at the annual church meeting of First Presbyterian Church, Eighth and Leavenworth.
Also known to former students as “Wild Bill” because of his hot and heavy evangelistic style of preaching, Guerrant has been in Manhattan since he took a job decades ago as the Kansas State College minister under the Westminster Foundation, then based in Topeka.
Currently living with his wife at 1619 Osage, Guerrant had been retired since 1951.
Before his retirement, though, Guerrant was instrumental in founding several Presbyterian Synod retreats including one in Colorado, and a closer one on Stagg Hill. Another dream he had that became reality after his retirement was the United Ministries for Higher Education building.
During his period as campus minister, Guerrant aided the ministers of First Presbyterian and gave support to a tired athletic program at K-State. Many of his students still remember his evangelistic oriented pep-talks he gave prior to football games – one, in fact from the top of railroad car.
OBITUARY - Program - First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan, Kansas, December 17, 1981
William U. Guerrant was born January 21, 1884, in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. His university studies were undertaken at Belvue College, Wilmore, Kentucky, Center College, Danville, Kentucky and at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, Columbia Seminary, South Carolina and Louisville Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.
In the early 1900s he played professional baseball and was known to have coached three University baseball teams in both North and South Carolina.
His ministry included, a teacher of Greek and Ancient History at the Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina, and as Principal of the Canyon Falls Academy in Kentucky. He held pastorates in Kentucky, West Virginia and in Indiana.
In September 1920, he was invited to become Director of the Westminster Foundation of the Presbyterian Church, serving through this as a campus pastor for Kansas State University. Mr. Guerrant was instrumental in establishing a Westminster House, as a campus center, now used as the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity House. His ministry was closely associated with the First Presbyterian, who shared with him in developing plans and the construction of the building known now as the Ecumenical Christian Ministry Center at 1021 Denison.
Mr. Guerrant was responsible in developing through the Synod of the Church, two Retreat Centers, including that in Colorado and at Stagg Hill here in Manhattan.
We gather this morning to tribute this man who with his life, has served the Church, counselled and encouraged generations of students, who affectionately knew him as "Wild Bill." He formally retired in September 1951. The Reverand Don Hammerli representing the Presbytery of Northern Kansas offers a tribute from the church this morning.
Mr. Guerrant was married to Clair Jordan, September 8, 1909 who preceded him in death in March this year.
We express every sympathy to his family, including William Guerrant of Wichita, David Guerrant of New Cannan, Connecticut, Gene Guerrant of Manhattan, Kansas and Etienne Britton of Lakewood, Colorado, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial in the name of William U. Guerrant has been established at First Presbyterian Church for their University Student Ministry.
Graveside services at Sunset Cemetery will follow this morning's celebration of worship.
NOTE FROM CHARLOTTE EDWINA (TOMPKINS) GUERRANT, CIRCA 1982
"William Upton - born in 1884, so he was named for Upton who had recently died. He died last year, the last surviving child of EOG and Mary, at 98. He had been senile for about 5 years, but until then was active. Their four children were David Edward (but called 'DS' for the name his mother wanted to name hime, we just learned) - is president of the North American division of Nestle's (nothing to do with the feeding the babies in Africa, but his sister said that he had had a lot of abuse heaped upon him because of it), another son in Wichita, and one in Manhattan, Kansas - a photographer, and another 'character'. The daughter, Eteinne, whom we visited last fall in Lakewood, Colo, near Denver, is a very nice person, living quite a hard life. She has been divorced twice, and lives with a retarded daughter. She is close to 'DS' who is very good to her. She cared for her parents during their last years."

Letter from Mary Grace (DeVault) Harris to Ruth (DeVault) Read dated July 15, 1953
901 South 38th Street,
Birmingham, Ala. July 15 1953
Dear Ruth:
It has been a long time since we have heard from any of you, - our fault too, but you know we are getting old and no account.
In this connection, I need your help in getting my Delayed Birth Certificate acceptable to the Social Security Board. I thought it had all the information required which included an affidavit by mother and two Aunts. In addition, I have submitted a photostatic copy of the page in the family Bible which your father gave me. You know he was always interested in these matters and I have been thankful for the many things he did.
The Social Security personnel here advise me that the manner of getting evidence for these Delayed Birth Certificates has almost become a "racket" and people in some cases will "Buy-off" a Notary Public and even hire strangers to swear they are a relative. So they are obliged to take due precaution and their suggestion is to have you call or write the Social Security Field Office at 210 New Post Office Building, Jefferson City, Missouri and say to them that you have the family Bible in the case of Oliver Basel Harris of Birmingham, Ala. in which Mary Grace DeVault Harris, his wife, has submitted a photostatic copy of the page showing her birth on July 7th 1883. Explain to them that it is inconvenient for you to bring the Bible to Jefferson City for examination and certification of this page. Request them to send someone to your home to certify the record. This is their custom and be sure to explain that it is the Oliver Basel Harris Claim as that is the way to identify the subject matter since they have a copy of the material filed. Please let me hear how you come out and I do hope it will not take too much of your time. If there is any expense I will take care of it. They say that if they can get the Bible page certified by one of their own staff they will accept my Birth Certificate. So I am surely thanking you in advance.
Your Uncle Paul has had a hectic Spring and Summer with an acute case of arthritis. He was in hospital 6 weeks. He had never been sick and was most active so this really slows him up. Not well yet. Paul, Jr and family are in New Orleans. The Government sent him there to attend Tulane for two years studying International Relations. Their young son Paul III had a miraculous heart operation in Boston in May. He was born with one valve in his heart too small and the time had come when it had to be corrected. Carol & Ernest were in Montgomery, also Paul, Jr's girls when the polio epidemic was raging. So Paul's children got out safely and went on to New Orleans and Carol & Ernest are back in Leavenworth. Your Aunt Lena well and also Aunt Ruby. Saw them last month. We are keeping fairly well. Now I have written the family news and would like when you reply to tell me news of yourself, Bud and children as well as Francis and J.B. I trust all is well with you and that life is good to you. Love to all.
Your Aunt Grace

BIOGRAPHY - Ruth LeMay (DeVault) Read -- A Remarkable Lady
The unexpected twin. Perhaps that would be the most accurate way to describe my grandmother, Mimi's (Ruth's) first moments.
On April 31, 1917, in a small town by the name of Martinsburg, Missouri, a baby boy was brought into the world . . . . . . and a few minutes later his twin sister was, too. The stories she heard of the birth told of a second baby that was so unexpected they wrapped her in some blankets and put her in the warming oven.
Soon after the birth, when the twins were eighteen months old, a near tragedy struck. Ruth and Francis took sick and were rushed by train to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. My grandmother isn't sure what the sickness was, but remembers her brother went into a coma and had to stay longer at the hospital. Luckily, both twins were spared.
Although she was the unexpected child, Ruth LeMay DeVault thought her childhood to be full and happy. Her father, John B. DeVault sold Studebakers for a living and provided a comfortable home for his wife, Effie Dye Walker, and their three children.
Their house in Mexico, Missouri, was built with the rooms circling around a core room where the children loved to play. Young Ruth got along well with her younger brother, John, and her twin, Francis. In fact, one of her earliest childhood memories is of her riding a bike with John in the basket. Over the years, the children played games like checkers and dominos or with their many collies.
One particular family vacation she remembers, was the time they went to visit Mr. DeVault's relatives in Kentucky, when she was about ten. My grandmother found it memorable because the family served their salad as a separate meal.
The DeVault family had close ties to their Presbyterian Church. Mr. DeVault was a church elder and superintendent of Sunday School, while Ruth spent some of her time there playing the piano. Although they were strongly tied to the church, Ruth attended a public school until college.
From first grade on, Ruth and about eight other school girls were an inseparable group. "Of course, I always liked the boys," she remembers. By sixth grade she had many boyfriends. One boy even brought her a birthday present of candy while riding his pony!
Sadly, because of the terrible depression that was hanging over the country, Ruth was the only one of her group of friends that was able to attend college.
She attended a Christian girl's college in town. She remembers, laughing, that the students were not allowed to go into town without their gloves on. She also attended the University of Missouri, where she majored in humanities and piano/organ.
Once out of college, she married Orville Hockett Read. They had met at a Demolay Organization dance when she was a sophomore. According to my grandmother, he was attractive because he was older (out of college when she met him) and willing to wait for her to go to college.
They were to have a huge, traditional wedding in the Presbyterian church, but her mother took sick and it was cancelled. The sickness, sadly became quite serious and Mrs. DeVault died when Ruth was nineteen. The wedding did go on though, just smaller.
The newlyweds took a short honeymoon, what most people would call a business trip to Duluth, Minnesota. Orville had some work to do there so Ruth accompanied him. After the trip, they returned to their home in Detroit, Michigan.
Their first child was born in San Mateo, California. The bouncy girl was named Ruth Carol Read. Her brother (my father) John DeVault Read, followed a few years later in Newark, New Jersey. The children got along well and brought their parents great joy in their personalities and accomplishments.
Sadly, in October of 1991, my grandfather passed away. It was a tough time for those that were close to the intelligent man, but the family coped.
One of the largest trips my grandmother has taken as an adult was when she went along with my father when his choir toured Europe. John was high school age and they both found it to be a very good experience.
Of the many places she has lived as an adult, her favorite is the small beach town of La Jolla, California, where she lives now.
Ruth gained some recognition in La Jolla when she was elected associate vice president of the Coldwell Banker Real Estate branch in town.
She is retired now, but is still doing her best to help the community. In her spare time, she helps manage the Darlington House, which raises money for a house for ladies of diminished means. You can also take a tour of the Salk Institute conducted by this wonderful lady. But the place you'll find Ruth most is watching over her son, his wife, and their new baby boy, John DeVault Read, Jr.
When asked what part of her life she would like to live over, she immediately responded, her forties. Ruth LeMay (DeVault) Read's reason was simple: "They were fun!"

'COUNT' ARRESTED AS FORGER IS IDENTIFIED AS NOTED BIGAMIST
Taken Into Custody at Home of Latest Bride, Member of Old Missouri Family.
CHECK FRAUD IS CHARGED
St. Louis Police Say Montgomery City Prisoner Has Wives All Over U.S.
"Count" Carl Mueller, arrested yesterday in Montgomery City, MO., at the home of his bride, who was Miss Lena Devault member of an old family there, is Charles Van Antwerpen, bigamist and embezzler, who has served time in prison and the police say, has bigamously married a dozen women in different parts of the United States.
THe St. Louis police on reading descriptions of the "Count" wired the Montgomery City police saying he was Van Antwerpen. Word was received by Chief Young today that the prisoner had admitted his identity.
He is being held on a telegram from the Cincinnati police, stating that he is wanted there on a charge of passing a worthless check for $380 on a Cincinnati jewelry firm.
SENTENCED TO PRISON.
The Cincinnati police were notified today that Van Antwerpen is the man who in 1907 married Miss Margaret Mulcahey, who then lived at 4227 Swan ave., St. Louis, after representing himself as a man of wealth. He was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary in 1910 for failing to support their child. The St. Louis police have requested that he brought here on his way East as new Bertilion photographs and measurements can be made of him.
The St. Louis police records show that Van Antwerpen married women in Evansville, Ill., Galesburg, Ill., and in Kansas and Missouri.
He served in the United States Army under the name of Schroeder and was discharged and pensioned after feigning tuberculosis. He was sent to the City Hospital here after being arrested on the charge of his wife, the former Miss Mulcahey, and was paroled on the same plea that he was a tuberculosis victim after being sentenced to two years in the penitentiary by Judge Wilson A. Taylor on the child abandonment charge.
PAROLE REVOKED.
He agreed to give his wife money to support their child, but disappeared later and his parole was revoked. His wife had the marriage annuled and has since remarried.
The police say Van Antwerpen also seved a two-year penitentiary sentence in Milwaukee on a charge of embezzlement.
While in St. Louis he represented himself as being a member of the Van Antwerpen family of Heidelberg, Germany, and said his sister was connected with the German Consulate at Washington. He was denounced by the German Consul as an impostor.
