It is with deepest sadness and regret, that we inform you of the loss of Brother Orville H. (Bud) Read, Missouri '33. After a long illness, he passed away on October 8, 1991.
Initiated into the Missouri Chapter in 1931, Brother Read remained a dedicated and loyal DU for 60 years. Among his extensive record of service to the Fraternity, were positions he held as Editor of the Quarterly Magazine (1947-69); Chairman of the Fraternity Board of Directors (1962-67); President of the Fraternity (1968-69), and author of Delta Upsilon's 150th Anniversary History, "Challenge, Conflict and Change".
Bud will be remembered as a friendly, outgoing, and honest brother with a sincere interest in the welfare of others. His even-handed and decisive leadership style, was mixed with a visionary sense of how fraternities ought to evolve. At a national Interfraternity Conference meeting, his speech entitled "The Case of the Vanishing Rushee", centered on the adverse effects of increasingly complex fraternity rush requirements. The speech was so well received, it was reprinted in pamphlet form and used throughout the fraternity world.
As one of the truly great brothers of the twentieth century, the Delta Upsilon Fraternity will commemorate the loss of Bud Read, by lowering to half-mast all flags at the Fraternity Headquarters on Founder's Day, November 4, 1991.
In addition, the next issue of the Quarterly magazine will feature an article on Brother Read's life, accomplishments, and service to DU. The article will reveal the gift by Bud's wife, Ruth, of $1000 to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. The article will also include the names of those brothers who make memorial gifts to honor the memory of Brother Read. It is hoped that such gifts, over and above an individual's annual support, will match or exceed the $1000 contributed by Mrs. Read.
Should you wish to send a gift to the Orville "Bud" Read Memorial Challenge, a return envelope is enclosed for your convenience.
Notes or letters of sympathy and condolence may be sent to:
