"Grace Owings married Peter, the brother of William, Lucy's husband. She had gone to visit Lucy when she met him (probably they had this in mind also!). She was 37 when she married, and had been companion, secretary, organist, etc. for her father in his evangelical work. We have a letter EOG wrote in response to Peter's request to marry her, saying that he was asking for his "Right arm", but was giving his permission. Peter and Williams' mother had died quite young of TB and Lucy and William lived in their home, and her daughter believes her mother, Lucy, got her illness from her."
Peter and Grace were 4th cousins. Peter is the brother of William Guerrant, husband of Grace's sister, Lucy (Guerrant) Guerrant.

Edward O. Guerrant, M.D., D.D.,
(1836-1916) Presbyterian evangelist and physician to the Appalachian Mountain poor.

Purchasing the property of Dr. Brown Ismael at 217 S. Main St., Dr. E.P. Guerrant (1888-1964) was off to an auspicious beginning. The location of his practice in Winchester, KY in 1913 was not a careless decision. His own father, Edward O. Guerrant, M.D., D.D. (1836-1916) was a renowned Presbyterian evangelist and physician to the highland peoples of the Appalachian Mountains. During his tour of service with Gen. John Hunt Morgan in the Confederate Army, Dr. E.O. Guerrant was taken back by the sparse or non-existent spiritual and health needs of the mountain people of Kentucky and, following graduation from seminary and medical school, gave the next forty years of his life to their betterment. At his death in 1916, God had blessed his work by creating: three orphanages, two colleges, fifty-six churches, schools, and mission houses, that touched the lives of 40,000 pupils, eighty-four salaried workers, hundreds of unsalaried volunteers, 362 evangelists, and 6,304 salvations for the Kingdom.

Twelve years would pass before a more spacious building located at 217 S. Main would be purchased in 1927. With $8,000 of his own money, Dr. E.P. Guerrant purchased the Edwardian architectural home and promptly placed it under the auspices of the Home Missions Department of the Southern Presbyterian Church. Two years later, on September 15, 1929, the Articles of Incorporation of the Edward O. Guerrant Memorial Association, named in honor of his evangelist/physician father, would be established. The articles present the goals of the mountain mission hospital: "to own and operate a mission hospital...to especially aid and serve the Southern people in our mountain districts; and no charge shall be made for those who are too poor to pay, nor shall any medical or surgical fee be charged to any mission worker or preacher or their dependents who are giving their lives to the Church's work."

Edward Putney's father convinced him that the dire needs of the Appalachian people were far more important than his desire to be a farmer. Highly educated for his day, Dr. E.P. Guerrant graduated from Tulane Medical School, with post-graduate work at Harvard University, Columbia University, Sloans Maternity Center, and John Hopkins, before coming to Winchester, Ky., by the prayers of his father, to open a practice for the mountain people. Winchester had been chosen because many Highlanders were too afraid to enter the big town of Lexington, Ky. for medical treatment. However, Winchester was small, the Lexington & Eastern Railroad passed through on its way to Jackson, Ky., and Winchester was close enough to Lexington and Louisville's Medical School for more serious cases.

Even through D.E.P. Guerrant opened his private practice in the McEldowney building in Court Street in 1913, he had not dismissed his fathers' exhortations to start a mountain mission clinic. In less than a year, he convinced the Ruby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund his effort to begin Winchester's first hospital.

Bethany Hospital was located in the Combs Building two doors from the Fairfax Church of Christ, which then was located on the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Maple Street. As a two story structure, Dr. Guerrant moved his private practice into the first floor, designating three hospital beds for the men's ward and a laboratory. The second floor contained one private room, three beds for the ladies ward, kitchen, and storage area. Bethany Hospital opened its doors on February 10, 1915 and received as its first inpatient, Mrs. Rice from Chevi, Kentucky.

Medical trips by Dr. E.P. Guerrant and his staff into the mountains of Eastern Kentucky continued for many years. Donations of every conceivable item poured into the mission hospital: clothing, bandages, medical equipment, sewing machines, furniture, farm equipment, produce and animals, and countless monetary donations, of which the largest (Mary Graddy Kendall and Hayden Kendall) donation helped to build the present Nurse's Home. But, no donation could match the sacrifice of Dr. E.P., his wife Lucy Mae, countless nurses such as Verda Brassfield, and the hundreds of volunteers who so generously gave without asking for anything in return than to remember Christ who made it all possible.

Item #1 (September 9, 1959) - Judge Thompson Hears Testimony Involving Floyd and Grayson County Negroes
Racial integration in Five Virginia communities is an established fact. And there's a prospect there'll be further integration in the state. Federal Judge Roby Thompson, hearing his first school segregation suit has called for more testimony today in U.S. Western District Court in Roanoke.
Attorneys representing 23 negro clients in Grayson and Floyd Counties are pressing for an immediate injunction that would admit the negro children to white schools in those communities.
Judge Thompson opened a hearing on the negro petitions involving Floyd County yesterday, but there was no immediate ruling. Testimony on the injunctions involving eight Negroes in Grayson County and two at Galax is scheduled for 9:30 this morning.
Tomorrow, in Roanoke Western District court, Judge Roby Thompson of Abingdon will hear testimony in behalf of Grayson County and Galax Negro high school students who have applied for admission to white schools...
The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. This afternoon evidence was completed for 12 Negroes seeking to enroll in Floyd county white schools. Before the proceedings got under way, a stream of Floyd and Grayson county Negroes were led into the Federal building by their attorney - Reuben Lawson of Roanoke. The chief counsel for the NAACP in Virginia -Oliver W. Hill- escorted them to the courtroom.
Today's principal witness was the superintendent of Floyd county schools - J.H. Combs. Combs said he believed transferring Negro tenth, 11th and 12th grade students from Christiansburg Institute to Floyd High School would seriously damage their educations because they would not receive unit credits at Floyd for some courses taken at the institute. He also said it might be necessary to close the three Floyd county high schools for a time "to work out proper registration" if the Court ordered Negroes admitted to them. And Combs accused "outside influences" of "disrupting previously good school relations between whites and Negroes in Floyd county."
Judge Thompson sharply questioned Combs as to why Floyd County had made no efforts to integrate schools after the 1954 Supreme Court decision. And Thompson said that if - as the Negroes contend - they have been deprived of their constitutional rights, they are right in saying they have suffered "irreparable injury."

Item #2 - Pulaski integration suit
The 18 Negroes attempting to get into the all-white Pulaski High School have filed a desegregation suit in Roanoke's Federal District Court.
NAACP Attorney Reuben Lawson filed the suit late yesterday. The Pulaski County school board Superintendent Frank J. Critzer and the State Pupil Placementt Board were named in the suit as defendants. A request for a restraining order will be heard by Federal Judge Roby Thompson on April 5.
The State Pupil Placement Board denied admission of Negroes to the school. Lawson declined to say when he will file another desegregation suit.

Item #3 - Judge Thompson Hears Attorneys Fighting Floyd and Grayson Integration
Federal Judge Roby Thompson this morning meets with attorneys in the Floyd and Grayson County desegregation cases.
And out of this session might come a decision in the two injunction proceedings involving the request of 22 negroes for admission to white schools in those counties.
Yesterday's session in Roanoke ended with Virginia's attorney general Albertis Harrison pleading for time in behalf of the school boards. Harrison said the school officials needed time to work out their problems now that they have come face-to-face with the integration situation.
The suits involve 6 negroes in Grayson County and two in the City of Galax who want admittance to Galax High School. 14 negroes petitioned for admission to high schools at Floyd and Check.
Judge Thompson noting that Grayson County Negroes must travel out of the county to attend a negro school said this is a depredation of their constitutional rights.

Item #4 - Floyd County Assigns Negroes
January 1960 will see the first integration of schools in Floyd County.....
The Floyd county school board has followed the instructions of a Federal Court order calling for admission of 13 negroes pupils to Floyd county white schools. The announcement of the board action was made today by Floyd County school Superintendent James H. Combs. His statements says this school board acted under duress of the Federal court order and with knowledge that failure to comply would result in an immediate citation for contempt.
Nine of the negro students have been assigned to Floyd County High while the other four will go to Check High.
