Gifted artist, avid gardener, and one who was passionate about donating her time and talents to community organizations, Jane Searcy Thompson passed away on June 20, 2004.
Thompson seved as a Tubman board member from 1993 to 2002. She brought her gifts as a professional artist, gardener and fundraiser to Tubman.
Thompson brought numerous local artists and their work to Tubman for long-term exhibit or as permanent gifts to the agency. Many of her own works currently hang in the public spaces at Tubman Family Alliance's office in south Minneapolis. Thompson was responsible for securing Jacob Lawrence, the artist who designed the first story panel which is a public art project that serves as a gateway to Tubman and the Lyndale neighborhood. In Thompson's honor, a second story panel was installed this summer. Thompson also created and cared for the gardens around Tubman. She was a constant fixture tilling the soil around the Harriet Tubman Women's Shelter when the building first opened in 1996.
In addition to Tubman Family Alliance, Thompson volunteered at Courage Center, where she spent many years teaching art to physically disabled adults.
