Note: In a letter written by her father on 18 December 1906, he says that Lucy was visiting family in Florida and would be going back to New Mexico soon. Lucy's Find-A-Grave memorial says she died six months later in Virginia. Lucy, her husband and children were probably living in Danville, Danville City County, Virginia at the time of her death.

JOSEPH M. PATTERSON was born August 7, 1826, and is the third son of John and Nancy (Campbell) Patterson, natives of Virginia and Jessamine County respectively. At the age of five years John Patterson came to Jessamine County from Virginia, with his father, William Patterson, who was a native of Scotland. John Patterson was a private in the war of 1812, was born December 3, 1786, and died April 11, 1870. He was engaged in farming and trading with New Orleans, going with produce by boat to New Orleans and walking back eight times. He once rode from New Orleans to Natchez on the old "Vissouvioux" the first boat ever floated on the Mississippi River. He was ten days going the distance of 300 miles. He could have walked it in less time. He has now living three children: Eliza, married to Rev. Crutcher, of Jessamine County; Joseph M. and Samuel. Joseph M. Patterson was born in Jessamine County, reared on the farm, and received a liberal education. In 1851-53 he was superintendent of the manufacture of rope-bagging and twine for George I. Brown. With this exception he has been engaged in farming, trading, raising and dealing in horses. He owns 250 acres of land in Lee District. December 11, 1851, he married Hannah A., daughter of Jacob Wilmore, who was also born in Jessamine County. To this union have been born ten children: William S., Mary J., Joseph M. Jr., Jacob, Robert G., John, Campbell and James, living, and two children dead, John and an infant. Mrs. Nancy Patterson was born February 19, 1791, and died October 17, 1863.
