Rites Conducted for Mrs. Joe B. Johnson
Mrs. Joe B. Johnson passed away on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock in a local hospital following an illness of several weeks. The body was removed to the late home on Spencer Street on Monday morning where the funeral was held at three o'clock on Tuesday afternoon with the Reverend Turner Clinard, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the Reverend Glen Daugherty, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Connie Crumley, Charles Earnest, Joe D. Johnson, Charles Johnson, John Cartwright and Charles Love.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband; one brother, Waldo Rankin of Sussex, Wisconsin, two nieces and three nephews.
Grace, as she was affectionately known to her many friends, was a light-hearted and sociable child whose girlhood was spent in the hospitable home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Rankin on Spencer Street.
Her maternal grandparents, the Reverend and Mrs. Peter Correll, were widely known and beloved residents of the Romeo Community where they spent many fruitful years in the Church of the Brethren.
A deep and abiding faith in God was early manifested in Grace's life, and she joined the First Presbyterian Church when quite young. She served eagerly and loyally in the Kings Daughters and the Margie Thomas Sunday School Class.
Following her graduation from Greeneville High School she attended Martha Washington College in Abingdon, Virginia which is now a lovely old inn. Here she was encouraged to develop a natural talent for art which she had loved from childhood. Through the years this talent flowed from her fingers in a profusion of lovely handpainted china and the artistically decorated walls of her home, many of which are adorned with delicate designs and exquisite colors.
On July 29, 1932, she was married to Mr. Joseph B. Johnson in a beautiful garden wedding across the street from her hospitable home.
In this home which she loved this energetic young housewife was encouraged to try her skill in making delicious cakes and jellies which were always shared with her friends. The interior of her home with its charm and originality reflects the master hand of a craftsman as many pieces of furniture and mirrors were made from her careful and accurate plans.
A part of Grece's life was the desire to invite friends into her home. One left with a vivid memory of perfection in the carefully arranged flowers, the perfectly blended foods and above all the warm hospitality of the hostess.
Flowers were the delight of her life, and she planted each delicate shrub with the air of a professional. Her green thumb seemed to encourage each blossom to bloom forth its best in order to please her.
In spite of her busy life Grace found time to call her friends, to visit them when they were ill, and keep in touch with distant ones.
Membership in the Andrew Johnson Club often gave her an opportunity to manifest her talent in flower arrangements and clever decorations.
Strength and honor and love of the beautiful were hers. She stretched forth her hands to the poor and needy. Her smile and words of encouragement made their burdens easier to endure.
Her love for her family and friends was one of the dominant factors of her life. Her marriage was exemplified by serene confidence and a devotion which grew and strengthened with the years.
The passing of the gracious person will be a great loss to the community in which she spent many happy years.

CHRISTENING CAP
There is a copy of a small note that I received from Elizabeth Kay (Perkins) Cloud. It reads as follows:
"This christening cap was embroidered and made by Mary Hershey in 1811. This young woman being a distant relative of Catherine Duval Roberts. It was used for the christening of Ann Eliza Roberts and her brothers Edward and William Roberts the latter being the father of Georgeana Perkins. Edith Jewell Garrels Lovingly presents this to her lineal descendant Virginia Brown. July 17, 1919."
Note: Mary (DeWald) Hershey and Catherine (DeWald) Roberts were sisters. The christening cap was passed down to Edith (Jewell) Garrels. Edith did not have any children and gave the cap to Virginia Perkins (Brown) Ott. Virginia gave the christening cap to her daughter, Virginia Allison (Ott) Powell. Virginia Allison gave it to Martha (Church) Lang. Martha's husband, Edward Lang, is a third great-grandson of Catherine (Dewald) Roberts. In 2005 the christening cap was in Martha's possession.
Washington County Cemetery Surveys say that Mary is buried beside her husband on the Harry Bane Farm at Conococheague Creek, near Mt. Tabor Church in Washington County, Maryland. In the same records there is a map that shows the location of the cemetery. My wife and I visited the area in 2006. It appears that the Harry Bane Farm and the cemetery have been replaced by a subdivision.
Note: This is the old, abandoned Mt. Tabor Church on Mt. Tabor road. There is a small cemetery at the old church, but the graveyard where the Hersheys were buried was located across the road.
