Pioneer Kingsport Doctor Dies At 64
Dr. Michael Dallas Massengill, Jr., an obstetrician who had been on the staff of Holston Valley Community Hospital since February, 1935, died at the hospital at 2:15 a.m. Saturday. His home was at 1352 Belmeade Drive.
Born May 29, 1906, at Piney Flats, the only son of the late M. D. and Glen DeVault Massengill, Dr. Massengill was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis and interned for two years at Charity Hospital in New Orleans before coming here.
He was a veteran of World War II and was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Linda Rector Massengill; and sisters, Mrs. C. P. (Flo) Edwards, Jr., Mrs. Bryant C. (Blanche) Long and Mrs. Fred (Jess) Strang, all of Kingsport.
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He and Mary Linda Rector had children in No Children.4

MEREDITH, WILLARD A. BLUFF CITY -- Willard A. Meredith, 89, of 310 Whitehead Road died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was a native of Campbell County, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in the Bluff City area, and was a son of the late Sampson and Sarah Reynolds Meredith. He was a graduate of Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Ky., and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Academic Society. He was a former vocational agricultural teacher at Bluff City High School and Sullivan East High School. He received local, state and national recognition for outstanding work in the Future Farmers of America, of which he received a National Honorary Degree. Mr. Meredith was a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church, Piney Flats. He was also a member of Zollicoffer Lodge 444, Bluff City, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and Jericho Shrine Temple. Survivors include his wife, Virginia L. Meredith of the home; one son, Frederick Meredith of Piney Flats; one daughter, Lynn Bennett of Franklin, Tenn.; two brothers, John Meredith of Alabama, and R.L. Meredith of Caryville, Tenn.; five grandsons, Scott Bennett, Mark Bennett, Joel Meredith, Joshua Meredith, Justin Meredith; one granddaughter, Kristen Meredith Bishop.; and three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Sarah Grace and Meredith Anne Bennett. Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, from Morning View Cemetery, Bluff City, with Dr. Allen Davis and Rev. Frederick Meredith officiating. Those who wish to attend the graveside are requested to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Active pallbearers will be selected from Mr. Meredith's grandsons and grandson-in- law, Joel Bishop. The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, from 6 until 8 p.m. from the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home-Bluff City Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Piney Flats Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 Cherry St., Piney Flats, TN 37686.

Fred Meredith went to rest in the arms of Jesus.
He was a native of Bluff City, TN. He was a faithful and loving husband for 40 years and an exceptional father and grandfather.
He graduated from Sullivan East High School and ETSU. Frederick had a varied career; he worked for Fisher Scientific Company and the American Red Cross of Charlotte, NC before being called in to the ministry. Afterwards Frederick was the Vice President of Christian Believers United of Montreat, NC in addition to working on the staff of the Inn of the Last Resort in Franklin, NC. He was the U.S. Director of Education for the International Christian Embassy in Israel. He served as the Director of Chaplain Training for Raceway Ministries overseeing campground ministries. He was also a Volunteer Leader with the Rapid Response Team of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association where he was instrumental in staging relief for hurricane Katrina. He was one of the first non-governmental individuals allowed on campus following the VA Tech Massacre. His most recent ministry was as a chaplain with Amedisys Hospice in Elizabethton, TN for 5 years. Frederick loved people and was a compassionate and caring man, always willing to serve the body of Christ where needed. He was a gifted Bible teacher, and enjoyed teaching on servant-hood and educating the church concerning our debt to Israel and the Jewish People. His presence has made a marked influence on our community and he will be missed greatly by family and friends.
Preceding him in death was his father, Willard Meredith.
Surviving are his wife, Jeni Williams Meredith; his mother Virginia Lee Meredith and children; Kristen M. Bishop and husband Joel of Little Rock AR, Joel C. Meredith of Nashville, TN, Joshua F. Meredith and wife Laura of Huntersville, NC, and Justin Meredith of Piney Flats, TN; 4 grandchildren; sister, Lynn Bennett and husband Willis of Franklin, TN; cousins, Haynes Miller, Phyllis Eldridge, Connie Sisk, and Elizabeth Carrier; and 2 nephews Mark and Scott Bennett.
