JAN. 30, 1982. WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT: Osborne - DeVault, Tampa Tribune (Tampa, FL); Tuesday, June 12, 1928; page 7; (GenealogyBank.com):
Former Tampa Girl Weds In Tennessee
Miss Eleanor Osborne, former Tampan now living in Johnson City, Tenn., and Walter David DeVault, of Knoxville, were united in marriage recently in a ceremony at the Central Baptist church of Johnson City.
A color scheme of pink blending into deep shades of rose was used for the church decorations. Floor baskets held Dorothy Perkins roses and pink candles were in floor candelabra.
A program of nuptial music was given with Miss Lou Lyle organist, Miss Lillian Rhea Hunter, soloist; Miss Margaret Herndon, harpist, and Robert M. May, violinist. The numbers included: "Eleanor" and "Barcarolle," instrumental, and "All For You" and "My Heart's Long Dream," from "Cavaleria Rusticanna," vocal. "My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice" was played during the ceremony.
The bride entered with her brother, John Alden Osborne, by whom she was given in marriage. Her wedding gown was of ivory Duchess satin and Brussels lace made in period design. The skirt was banded with lace and outlined with ribbons, rhinestones and pearls, and had an uneven hem line. A lace bertha finished the fitted bodice. The veil of tulle was arranged with a coronet of rose-point lace with sprays of orange blossoms for trimming. She carried a shower bouquet of pale pink rose buds circled by valley lilies.
Mrs. John Alden Osborne, matron of honor, wore a pink taffeta dress with full skirt and tight bodice trimmed with bias fringed ruffles of graduated width on pink net over taffeta. Hand-made roses cascaded down the side of the bodice and onto the skirt. She carried a bouquet of Bremer roses and snapdragons in shades of pink, tied with pink tulle,
Miss Mabel Mabry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Mabry, 1503 Bayshore boulevard, was maid of honor. She wore a dress of green satin with a bodice trimmed with panels, back and front, of pearls and rhinestones. The skirt was of tulle with pink and green silk roses marking the waistline. Her slippers were of matching green and she carried Columbia roses and pink snapdragons tied with ribbon streamers of satin.
The bridegroom's attendants were: John D. Cox, of Jonesboro, best man, and Robert Bachmann, Frank D. Hannah and Harry Faw, of Johnson City, and Robert L. Faust, of Knoxville, as ushers.
An informal wedding reception was held at the home of the bride's cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bachman, after the ceremony. Here roses and peonies decorated the lace spread table which was centered with the wedding cake. This was in three tiers, topped with a wedding bell showered with valley lilies.
Mr. and Mrs. DeVault left during the evening by motor for an extended trip though the east, to points in the Adirondack mountains and Canada.
For traveling the bride wore an ensemble of sailor blue crepe Elizabeth trimmed with white nail head beads in graduated sizes. Her hat and accessories were of matching blue.
Mrs. DeVault is the only daughter of Mrs. William H. Osborne of Tampa. She is a graduate of the Florida State Woman's college and of Columbia university. After a summer of travel in Europe, she accepted a position to teach at Salem college, Winston-Salem, N. C.
Mr. Devault is a graduate of Brown university and the Harvard law school. He has been practicing law in Knoxville for a number of years.
Among the Tampans attending the wedding were: Mrs. James Q. Brantley, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Brooks and Miss Mabry.

Mary Kitzmiller was born on 4 January 1869 in Tennessee.1,2 She and William Henry Osborne were married on 2 January 1890 in Washington Co., Tennessee.1,7 She died on 26 September 1948, at age 79, in Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee.1,8 She was buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee.8 Mary Kitzmiller had reference number 753. She resided in Tampa, Florida (1921.)9 She was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1870, 1880); Hillsborough County, Florida (1900, 1910); Knox County, Tennessee (1940.) Two handwritten notes that I have attributed to Mary (Kitzmiller) Osborne. The originals were in the possession of Christopher Bryant.
Note1:
I'm not sure just what part of mother's wearing apparel this is - a "panty leg" maybe. In that far away day I think they basted fancy pieces on their "tops" - any way note the braded designs - several by hand.
As a child I played with a little hand turned machine - I've no doubt this was done on it - before it was discarded.
1867 - the year mother was married.
Note 2:
Some of my wedding finery - Behold the miles of tucks!!
Miss Mattie Chase - lived near Jonesboro came to our house once or twice a year to "sew" - was a wonderful person. She made the most beautiful shirts for my father - later married - had a son who became a "bank examiner" a fine man. "Miss Mattie" would have been tops in moving picture work - a brilliant mind - natural mimic. It was at her house (4 miles this side of Jonesboro that little "Ida Cox" was going to stop - on her way home when she got upset about something. It was a real joke between her & my grandmother Kity whom she "adored."
The lace came from Altman's at $1.00 a yard.
Note: It appears that Mattie Chase was Martha Ellen "Mattie" (Chase) Shoun (1854 - 1938). It also appears that Ida Cox was Ida Virginia Bachman (Cox) Roach (1879 - 1961). If so, Ida and Mary were first cousins. The grandmother, Emaline Bridwell, was a grandmother to both Ida and Mary.

McCormick, “Mr. Milligan College”
From staff reports
Joe P. McCormick, known to some as Mr. Milligan College” and described as a man who not only raised money but gave it as well, died Tuesday at 91.
McCormick died at 12:40 p.m. at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman. He was transported to the hospital from the Johnson City Country Club where he was attending a meeting of the Johnson City Rotary Club.
McCormick was an assistant to Milligan College presidents for almost 34 years. Marshall Leggett, Milligan’s current president, said McCormick was “one of the most remarkable men I’ve ever known.
McCormick actually started his association with Milligan as a student. In the mid-1920s he transferred to the college from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now Tennessee Technological University) in Cookeville near his home in neighboring Algood.
Steve Lacy, a board of trustees member, said McCormick was only the second man in the college’s history to be captain of the football team twice. McCormick graduated from Milligan in 1926, one year before Lacy arrived. But they became friends.
About 32 years ago, Lacy said, he and the treasurer of Milligan College’s board of trustees decided action was needed to help Milligan’s finances. “We both knew about Joe McCormick’s great fund raising from his experience at church. He was the principal fund-raiser at First Christian Church.” Lacy said.
He said they felt if they could get the (Johnson City) Laundry’s owners to give McCormick, then a manager at the laundry. A leave of absence for a year “He would be able to raise enough money to get Milligan on a sound financial basis.”
McCormick soon found himself with a full-time position at Milligan, where he stayed.
Lacy described McCormick’s death as “a great shock. It’s unbelievable. He was 91 years old but there was something about him where you didn’t think about him ever passing away. He was such a strong individual physically, in every way.”
McCormick drove more than 25,000 miles yearly for Milligan to help fill the college’s coffers with donations, according to a November Johnson City Press article. Offering “just a guess,” he said then he had raised $15 million in donations for Milligan throughout the years. Both Lacy and Leggett agreed with that guess.
Lacy said McCormick’s “leadership and his method of raising money will be copied in the future for Milligan College and I think they will incorporate many of his methods and pursuits.
McCormick kept records of every person who donated money and the time it was raised. Lacy said, “Each year he would go back at the same time. He was in the process at 91 to raise more money than he had ever raised in history.”
Lacy said he not only raised money but gave it as well. “It’s unbelievable the amount of money (McCormick gave to Milligan).”
“He will be sorely missed by Milligan both as a person and an administrator,” Leggett said.
McCormick, 2101 Christian Lane, No. 502, was a Cookeville native and a son of the late William and Lee Ann Walker McCormick.
He was a graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic High School, Cookeville.
McCormick was manager of Johnson City Laundry from 1925-56.
He was a member of First Christian Church, where he led fund-raising efforts for the church’s new building in northern Johnson City. McCormick also served on the church’s board of elders and deacons for many years and taught various Sunday school classes.
McCormick was a member [of] the Rotary Club for more than 50 years, serving as president from 1936-37. He received the Paul Harris Fellow award for loyal service to the club and community.
He was also a 50-year Mason and a member of the Scottish Rites body.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lora Devault McCormick; one son, Joseph P. McCormick Jr., Birmingham, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Gray, Johnson City; one sister, Henrietta Buck, Johnson City; two grandsons, Rick Gray, Johnson City, and Todd McCormick, Birmingham; two granddaughters, Lora Gray, Atlanta, and Beth McCormick, Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

-------
Father, into thy hands I
commend my spirit.
(left) (front) (right.) The Hannah family lived originally at Roanoke, Virginia, on a farm where the city is now located. They decided to sell out and move west. The story is told that they were traveling west in a big covered wagon when they came to DeVault's Ford in the late afternoon, where they decided to pitch camp for the night before crossing the river. My great-grandmother, Susan (Range) Davault, lived on high ground, back from the ford near where the large brick house now stands. My great-grandmother sent word down to the Hannah wagon for the mother and the two little girls to come up to the house and sleep that night. The next morning my great-grandmother was teasing the little Hannah girls that she would let them marry her two sons, Valentine, Jr. and Isaac. As it happened the Hannah family located in that neighborhood rather than going west. Afterwards the two sons married the two Hannah sisters. Great-grandmother Hannah was born 1808, died 1904 and is buried at DeVault's Ford graveyard, as were her two daughters, Edna and Mary Elizabeth, and another daughter, Nancy."
Story told by Harry Faw, Johnson City, Tennessee.
