Melvin was born August 14, 1929, to Ben and Maude Overbay in Fordtown, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his only son, Melvin, Jr., his parents and three siblings.
Melvin was a retired captain for the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department and he was a retired veteran of World War II. He was a dearly loved husband, father, "Poppie," Great Grandfather and friend. He will be forever missed in our hearts.
Melvin passed away on February 10, 2012, at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carole Overbay; three daughters, Kathy Sams (Everett), Deborah Peterson (Eric), Cindy Ridenour (Kenny); 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Feb. 14, at E. S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel, Inc. Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the funeral chapel. Burial 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan. (Arr.: E. S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel North, 4707 E. Truman Rd, KCMO.
