His third wife, Betty (or Bettie) Elizabeth (Frazier) Redwine (1884 - 1948) must have married Joseph after 1930 as she was still shown as a widow in the 1930 Census. On her death certificate Betty's married name is "Wine."

He was a member of the Blountville Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services for John David Thomas will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Blountville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Earl Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Blountville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to be made to the Blountville Presbyterian Church. Graveside Masonic services will be conducted by Blountville Masonic Lodge. The family will receive friends at Akard Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Akard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
