We the undersigned committee appointed by the Sabbath School at Devault's to draft resolutions in regard to the death of Miss Rebecca Akard, having discharged the duties assigned us beg leave to submit the following whereas: It has pleased the great Sup't of our Sabbath School in his wisdom and Providence to call from us our regular and faithful scholar R. C. Akard who in every respect was an estimable young lady ???? in all the relations of her short life as daughter, sister and friend. She was a consistent member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, and a very zealous and prompt member of our Sabbath School. On the evening of the 1st of August at fifteen minutes past four O'clock after a short and very painful struggle with that horrid and fatal disease Typhoid fever, she passed triumphantly "over the river to rest under the shade of the trees:" from the sorrows of earth to that sweet rest that remaineth for the blest by the river of life in the Paradise of God.
Resolved. That we bow in humble submission and resignation to the all wise command of our great Redeemer above.
Resolved. That we deeply regret the untimely death of Rebecca and sincerely mourn her loss.
Resolved. That during her connection with our Sabbath School she has ever been a diligent and faithful scholar and by her uniformly kind and womanly bearing has gained the confidence of both teachers and pupils.
Resolved. That we tender our heartfelt sympathies to her relatives and mingle our tears and sorrows with theirs.
Resolved. That we foster and cherish the many virtues and excellencies of our departed friend and associate, and ?? ..... ?? of the true regard and high esteem in which she was held by us that each member of this Sabbath School wear a badge of mourning for five successive Sabbaths.
Resolved. That the secretary record these proceedings in his record and forward a copy to the LANDMARK for publication, and that he forward a copy to the bereaved family, with the assurance of our deep sympathy wi ???......?? their bereavement.

Personals
Those calling to see Mrs. Akard recently were: Miss Vestal Barr, Mrs. Wm. Barr and Mrs. Hugh Cross of Blountville and Mrs. Joseph Wine, [wife of] her brother, of Indian Springs.

Note: Mrs. Akard was Barbara Ann (Wine) Akard (1854 - 1928), third wife of Joseph Henry Akard; Mrs. William Barr was Elizabeth Sarah Akard (1866 - 1949); Miss Vestal Barr was Ola Vestal "Vestal" Barr (1901 - 1986), daughter of William and Elizabeth Barr; and Mrs Hugh Cross was Jerusha Jane (Jones) Cross (1863 - 1935). Mrs. Joseph Wine is a bit of a mystery. Joseph Christian Wine (1860 - 1935) was born and lived most of his life in Indian Springs, Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was married three times. His second wife, Laura J. Campbell died in 1926. His third wife, Betty (or Bettie) Elizabeth (Frazier) Redwine (1884 - 1948) must have married Joseph after 1930 as she was still shown as a widow in the 1930 Census. On her death certificate Betty's married name is "Wine."

Dear Leona, I did not find out much. You must excuse pencil my pen is broke & I tried to borrow one from Rice Cross [1] family & they was like myself had none. Aunt Catherine [2] told me what I put down. She said you had it wrong one place. Mary Davault [3], sister of Catherine [4], married Adam Giesler [5] in place of Henry. Their son Henry [6], Jacob's [7] twin brother, married Anna Wolford [8] in place of Mary Davault. She had forgot Uncle Mike's [9] age & I will get that later. All the old books was sold at the sale after Henry Davault [10] died. Clint Webb [11] had the sale. he was appointed by his uncle Henry to do so. John Davault [12] lived in Mo., had children but she had forgot their names. King Akard [13] took me to New Bethel. saw lots of old friends & heard fine sermon & talks. King took me to the Latture-Akard Reunion. was so nice Cousin Joe Latture [14] read the History of the Lattures & Akards to the 5th generation. My great-grandfather Latture [20] and my great-grandmother Akard [21] was brother and sister. wish you could been there. do you take the Bristol Courier? guess you saw it in the paper.
Well one sad event, Elva Akard [15], brother Henry daughter [16] was there and Tuesday Sept. 6, while putting her mild away at the speing house drop dead. Heart failure the Dr. said. She had stayed with her parents & been so good to them and since her mother died just her and Henry lived there until Enos Akerd [17] & family came in from Calif. this summer.
Adaline Cross [18] is on Reedy Creek visiting. She did not know any thing. Leona I never was in as bad condition as we are. N. D. [19] gets worse, can't go only on his cane. And we lost our tobacco crip last fall & the foxes ate most all my chickens up and we tried early tomatoes this spring, lost all our plants. Have nothing coming in. Don't see how we can pull through. No coal for winter and nothing to buy with. No corn or Iris potatoes hardly anywhere. They say not half crop & only half of wheat. Can't sell anything since all the banks closed. Cattle is only 2/3 to 2ยข a pound.
Write me. Your cousin Maggie.

Note: Leona was working on organizing some family information. She had previously sent some pages of information to Maggie. This letter accompanied the return of those pages with some corrections written directly on the pages.
