OBITUARY - Greensboro News & Record (NC), Sunday, October 29, 1995, Edition: ALL, Page: B5

Rupert Nelson Latture, the last surviving charter member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership society, and former faculty member and administrator at Washington and Lee University died Thursday, Oct. 26, 1995, at Maryfield Nursing Home in High Point. He was 103 years old.
A native of Bristol, Tenn., Latture first came to Washington and Lee in 1911 as an undergraduate. He earned his B.A. in 1915 and his M.A. the following year. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate.
In 1914, Latture and a classmate, J. Carl Fisher, conceived the idea of a campus leadership society. Their vision led to the founding of Omicron Delta Kappa, that now has chapters in more than 220 colleges and universities in the United States. Latture received ODK's Laurel Crown Circle Award--the society's highest honor in 1990.
After graduating from W&L, Latture taught at the Miller School in Albermarle County, Va., before serving in World War I from 1917 to 1919. While in France, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Army.
Upon returning to the United States, Latture served as principal of the Central Academy in Stuart, Va. for one year. In 1920, he returned to Washington and Lee as assistant professor of Romance Languages. As a member of the faculty, he held several positions, including chairman of the Political Science department and head of the freshmen program.
Latture retired from active teaching in 1962. At that time, he was asked by then President Fred C. Cole to stay on as an assistant to the president. He held that position for 21 years, serving Cole and later President Robert E.R. Huntley and John D. Wilson. He again retired in 1983 and turned his attention to special research projects associated with the university.
Latture also served for many years as adviser to the W&L Mock Political Convention. Although he missed the first convention in 1908, he attended every one through 1984. He was an elder emeritus of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.
Throughout his years at Washington and Lee, he became an unofficial ambassador for the university. Many times, he was the first person to greet incoming freshmen and parents when they came to matriculation in the fall. He took great care to welcome the new students and to make them feel at home.
Latture performed a similar role in his position as special assistant to the president. Sitting in the President's outer office before a painting of Robert E. Lee--whom Latture referred to as "my contemporary"--he regaled visitors with stories and anecdotes from his many years of service to the university.
In 1980, Latture receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Washington and Lee. The citation for the degree called Latture a "mover" of the university, "evoking in us sentiments of admiration, pride, and great respect. Of all the honorary degrees ever conferred by Washington and Lee Unviersity, none has ever been awarded with the special gratitude and affection that accompany this proclamation."
Latture was married for 51 years to Roberta Fulton Latture, who preceded him in death in 1968. He is survived by a son, William E. Latture of Greensboro; a daughter, Mrs. Roberta L. Woolfenden of Lexington, Va.; grandchildren, Laura W. Brown of Willow Grove, Pa., Helen G. Rossi of Beverly Hills, Mich., David R. Woolfenden of Clarkston, Mich., Sarah L. Helms of Atlanta, Ga., Richard G. Latture of Centreville, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Va., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maryfield Nursing Home, 1315 Greensboro Rd., High Point, NC 27260; or to the ODK Scholarship Fund, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. 24450.
