Chapter History:
Beta Psi Chapter
California State University–Long Beach
Long Beach, California
Chartered as Phi Kappa Tau, March 17, 1956
Paul J. Stanick, Southern California '48, convinced some friends who were attending Long Beach State to form a Phi Kappa Tau colony to bring the fraternity to their campus. To the fraternity’s good fortune, three well-placed administrators at Long Beach also were members of Pi Chapter at Southern California, and they immediately became helpful to the new group. Dr. David L. Bryant, Southern California '26, was executive dean of the college, Dr. Francis Flynn, Southern California '27, was the dean of students, and Clarence R. Bergland, Southern California, was an admissions officer.

William S. Maddio was the first president of the colony, and he oversaw an aggressive recruitment program that resulted in thirty-four members by the time the national council approved the installation date of March 17, 1956, fifty years to the day after the fraternity had been founded at Miami University.

More than three hundred people attended the installation, which was held in conjunction with the Founders Day celebration at the Southern California Alumni Association and the chapters of the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. Judge Eugene Fay, Southern California '25, was the master of ceremonies, and National President Roland Maxwell gave the main address. Jack L. Anson presented the Beta Psi charter to the new chapter president William S. Maddio.

HOW BETA PSI CAME TO BE

Just 5 short years after the campus now known as CSULB was founded, William S. Maddio and a group of friends undertook an ambitious project: to bring the first fraternity to this campus. Thus was born Beta Psi. Chartered on the 50th anniversary of Phi Kappa Tau, Beta Psi was a rock of the CSULB Fraternity system into the mid-1990's, when membership dropped, and the chapter had to be closed.

In Spring 1999, Kees Woudenberg began his search for a new fraternity. After looking through numerous information packets, he found Phi Kappa Tau. It was a perfect fit, and thus Phi Kappa Tau returned to campus in fall of 1999 under the guidance of Gabe Uebel and Jeff Hilperts, recruiting 13 other guys by the end of rush. These fourteen men were formally associated with Phi Kappa Tau on September 17th, 1999, and the colony was formally reinstalled at a small gathering the following day, and so Beta Psi was once again an official participant in the life of CSULB. A year and a half of hard work has brought us to where we are today. Through good and bad, the 25 men who are proud to call themselves Phi Kappa Tau have overcome many obstacles, earning Phi Kappa Tau's administrative excellence award, placing among the top in IFC academics, taking third place at Greek Sing, and earning the Interfraternity Conference Pride award.
