Snow Produces Neighborliness
Rural Family Proves 'Live' Horsepower Has Its Advantage Over Mechanized Type
In this modern age of sputnicks, rockets, missles and machinery, who would ever think of reverting back to horses for transportation instead of the super-powered automotive vehicle?
Well that is exactly what happened to some members of the Oral Day family Saturday afternoon during the height of the crippling snowstorm that hit here.
Mr. and Mrs. Day and their youngest son, Marvin, were enroute home after witnessing the afternoon session of the Salem Basketball Sectional. They live a mile or so south of Canton -- and that is all the further they got. The road was blocked by huge snowdrifts the rest of the way.
Mrs. Day stayed at the store in Canton while her husband and son waded through the deep snow to their home. Later the two returned to the store with two horses. Together all three went home on horseback -- Mrs. Day and son on one horse and Mr. Day on the other along with the groceries they had purchased before leaving Salem.
Because of the snowstorm, the Days had arrived at the opening of the afternoon session of the sectional aboard a truck which had been heavily loaded with bales of hay. But it proved to be no match for the snow-drifted roads -- and the live horse (power).
The snowstorm, among other things, promoted good neighbor policy between city and rural people. As one of the correspondents for this newspaper said: "Country people stayed in the city and the city people stayed in the country."
And that's what took place when people traveling from city to city became snowbound on the highways. They had to spend the night wherever they could find a place. The same applied to rural people attending the sectional, visiting or shopping in town.

Note: This piece was followed by a number of similar short stories about people stuck in the snow.

Miss Berniece Walker Becomes Bride Of Harold F. Day
The surban home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Walker, was the scene of a pretty wedding Thursday afternoon, June 21, when their daughter Miss Berniece Walker, became the bride of Harold F. Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Day.
