HOLY CARD
There is no death! What seem so is transition
This life of Mortal breath;
Is but a suburb of the life elysian,
Whose portal we call death
In Loving Remembrance of
Jeremiah L. Payne,
Died Aug. 1, 1889
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we lived is stilled;
A Place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given;
And though the body moulders here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.

Civil War, U.S. Army, hired a substitute for $1,000.13 After Catherine died, Wiley married Mary Marie Beeson.
BIOGRAPHY - by Son, Isaac Lewis Anderson; (Ancestry.com)
At the age of twenty-one, Dec 9th, 1854, he was married to Catherine M Payne, daughter of Lewis and Susannah Payne. To this union were born four sons and one daughter, namely: Isaac Lewis, Linza M, William F, James H, and Amanda E, all of whom are living and pleasantly located near the old homestead near South Boston.
On the twelfth of Oct 1864 he was drafted and was ordered to report at New Albany; was examined at the office of Dr Meriweather and pronounced an able bodied man -- it was either go or furnish a substitute; the wife and mother's health failing, she plead for him not to go and leave her and the children; heeding her appeals, he procured a substitute for $1,000. Her health gradually grew worse being a victim of that dreadful disease consumption, her death came April 25, 1872. He was again married Nov 2, 1874 to Mary M Beeson, daughter of William and Rebecca Beeson -- residing one mile west of South Boston.
It may be said that he was among the pioneer threshermen of those days; his first experience in threshing was helping to clean off a nice level piece of ground for the tramping floor and placing the sheaves on the floor in a circle, then driving the horses over them at the same time stirring the straw until the grains were shelled out; the next to be done was to rake the straw from the grain and chaff; this was done by taking hold of each end of a sheet and fanning briskly while some one stirred or dropped the chaff and grain.
About the year 1865 he bought an eight horse power, Munn Separator of John Overman, near Salem -- after operating a few years he purchased a Garr Scott steam threshing outfit, being among the first steamers in the county. He owned and operated threshing machinery for twenty years. He has never taken an active part in politics, never aspiring to any office or trust. He has always been a staunch Democrat, never missing an election. His first vote was cast for James Buchanan for President; has often said that he hoped to live long enough to see a Democrat President in the White House and a Democrat majority in Congress. This hope was realized ten years ago. Mr Anderson at present is hale and strong, boasts that he can cut twenty-five shocks of corn every day on an average.
OBITUARY - The Salem Leader or The Salem Democrat; after March 03, 1929:
OLDEST RESIDENT OF COUNTY DIES
Again the Grim Reaper has visited our community and taken away one of the oldest citizens of the county, James Wiley Anderson passing away March 3, 1929. Had he lived until May he would have reached his ninety-sixth birthday.
He was the son of Linza and Zelphia Anderson, being the second child in a family of five sisters and three brothers.
He was born May 24, 1833 in Washington county, near Pekin, Ind. And there grew to manhood. With his parents he moved to the old home farm near Pekin and while living here he was married to Catherine M. Payne Nov. 24, 1854. With her he moved to the present home near South Boston, where he lived until his death, a period of about seventy years.
To this union were born four sons and one daughter, namely, Isaac L., Linza M. (deceased), William F., Amanda E. and James H. (deceased).
He also reared to manhood one nephew, Willard E. Weller.
On April 25, 1872 the wife and mother passed away, leaving him the care of the children.
He was married to Mary M. Beeson Nov. 12, 1873, and this union was broken by her death in May 1919.
He was a charter member of the Church of Christ at Cross Roads and served as elder from the time the church was organized until he became disabled by advanced age.
Few people are privileged to live the greatest number of years and witness the progress of country such as was he. Many hardships were encountered in the transition from the use of oxen and the horse-power threshing machine down to the present time. But thru it all he gained the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
Surely of him it can be truly said he has fought the good fight, he has finished the course, he has kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for him the crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give to all.
“I shall know the loved who have gone before,
And joyfully sweet will be the meeting be
When over the river, the peaceful river,
The Angel of death shall carry me.”
“Dear is the spot where Christians sleep,
And sweet are the strains that angels pour,
O! Why should we in anguish weep?
They are not lost; but gone before.”
The funeral services were conducted by Evangelist Q. W. Scott at the home, Tuesday, March 5, 1929 and the remains were placed to rest in the Payne cemetery near South Boston.

HOLY CARD
To live in hearts we leave
behind, is not to die.
IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE
-OF-
ISAAC ANDERSON
Died Dec 19 1897
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled,
The boon His love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.

ANDERSON
BORN
SEPT. 10, 1835
DIED
DEC 19, 1897. There is a confusing piece of information: Millie and Oscar Anderson, the last two children shown in the 1870 Census were twins, born September 2, 1869. This is only a couple of months after Isaac's marriage to Rebecca. For this reason, the father of Millie and Oscar is unknown. Isaac married again in 1875. It is not known what became of Rebecca and her two children.
