William E, "Buck" McLean, a onetime barnstorming aviator who guided the development of the Orlando International Airport as the city's aviation director for more than a decade, died Monday at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He was 78.
"He was the pioneer in aviation for the city," said longtime friend Fred Turner. "He will probably be remembered as having had the vision and foresight for what the McCoy Airport could be."
When he became aviation director in the mid-1950s, the city's main airport was Orlando Executive, then called Herndon Airport.

"He started out barnstorming and brobably was the foremost aviation expert in Orlando during his time. The transition from Herndon to McCoy airfield was due to his leadership."

Hubert piloted the first plane brought to Asheville, North Carolina. He enlisted in the aviation corps in January 1915, and was appointed sergeant in the 15th Aero Squadron, Signal Corps, October 1, 1917, at Hazlehurst Field, Mineola, New York. He was at Rockwell Field, San Diego, California in 1919. Hubert also served as an instructor pilot at Mitchell Field.
Hubert was chosen as one of four pilots to make the first transcontinental flight attempted by the United States Army under the leadership of Major Albert D. Smith and he bears the distinction of being the only pilot to return with the same plane.
Shortly after World War I, he was a border patrol using DH-4 airplanes and he was established along the Mexican border. Lieutenant Hubert McLean was in command of a detachment first at Eagle Pass and later Del Rio. One of his subordinates was 2nd Lieutenant (later General) James (Jimmy) Dolittle. Lieutenants McLean and Dolittle were recommended for permanent commission in the Air Service, Regular Army, on the same letter (July 2, 1920). Hubert retired from the army in 1921.
Hubert joined the Mexican Gulf Oil Company circa 1921. He organized an aerial motor transport company in Mexico, which became part of Aviation Corporation of America. He was flying the payroll in a Fairchild for outlying camps when his plane hit a wire as he dipped to make the drop. The two passengers lived. Because of the bandits, payrolls had to be transported and dropped by air. At his funeral the floral arrangement was in the shape of a large airplane. It was said over five thousand people attended. Services were conducted by Rev. G. W. McClanahan and Rev S .M. Rankin. His death was reported as far away as New York City in both the Times and World newspapers.

She was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Indiana (1850 - 1880, 1900, 1910.) OBITUARY – The Salem Leader or The Salem Democrat; after12 July 1916:
MRS. CAROLINE PAYNE
The time will come in the life of every one of us, however dear that life may be, however strong the desire to cling to it when we must yield it up to Him who gave it, so, a long and well spent life was ended in the Highland neighborhood early Wednesday morning and a tired and weary soul passed into the Haven of Rest.
Caroline, daughter of Elias and Sarah Davis, was born at Salem, Indiana, February 12, 1833, and died on the early morning of July 12, 1916, age 83 years and six months.
In the year of 1848 she was married to Henry Rice Payne and to this union were born eleven children, seven of whom are still living, viz: Wm. E., Jordon M., Francis L., Henry B., Edgar D., Mrs. Sylvester Graham and Mrs. A. C. White, Mrs. A. J. Peugh having preceded her to the great beyond the 4th of May, 1916. She also leaves four brothers and one sister, namely, John Davis, of Texas; Benton, Enoch and Walter, of Salem; and Mrs. Jane Sowles, of New Albany, Indiana.
At an early age, she united with the Methodist church and until her death she lived a true, simple Christian life, always attending church until her health was impaired, about two years ago. For the last few months and weeks she was afflicted with a complication of diseases, and death came as a welcome to her suffering and pain, Wednesday morning at 6:15.
Besides the immediate family, a large concourse of relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss and to vouch for a life well spent in work for her neighbors, friends and her Savior.
The funeral services were conducted at the Highland M. E. Church by her pastor, Rev. N. M. Rumbley, assisted by Rev. Trowbridge, of Odon, Indiana, Friday morning, July 14th, at 10 a.m. The remains were laid to rest by those of her companion, who departed this life April 30, 1904, in the beautiful city of the dead, Crown Hill cemetery.
“Gone but not forgotten.”.
