-- Sallie B., wife of Jordon Payne, died Wednesday night at 10:30 of consumption, after a lingering illness of many weeks. The burial took place yeaterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Friends grave yard, 2 miles northeast of Salem.

OBITUARY #2

Sallie Boling Payne; born 24 July 1856; died 7 May 1889; daughter of Silas Boling and Emeline Stanley; wife of Jordan Payne.

Note: There is some evidence that suggests that Sallie's parents were Isaac Boling (brother of Silas) and Ann Stanley (sister of Emeline).

OBITUARY #3 - Republican Leader, May 15, 1889

Sallie J., wife of Jordan M. Payne, died at her home in Salem on Wednesday, May 8th, of consumption. The deceased was born June 24, 1856 and hence was in the 32d year of her age. Her maiden name was Boling and she was born in Missouri, but her parents dying when she was quite young, she was brought to this county and reared by her grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Stanley. In 1875 she was married to Jordan M. Payne with whom she lived happily until the time of her death. To them were born five children, four of whom, all girls survive their mother, the oldest being 10 or 11 years old and the youngest 20 months. About two years ago she showed symptons of consumption and since that time had been gradually sinking. She was a devout Christian and had been a member of the M. E. church for 15 years. Her funeral occurred at the Quaker church on the 9th inst. according to the custom of the Society of Friends, and Elwood Trueblood delivered the address.
Mr. Payne is a good citizen and has the earnest sympathy of his neighbors, but most of all ones heart goes out to those little girls who are never more to know the watchful care and kind advice of a loving mother. Only those who have suffered such a loss and experienced the trials, temptations and vexations which beset such can truly appreciate their great loss. May the guiding hand of a gracious Providence aid and protect them.
Siblings Charles Albertus Boling and Sarah "Sally" Boling married cousins, Mary Ellen Payne and Jordan M. Payne.

BASIC FACTS

Mary Ellen Payne was born on 10 September 1858 in Salem, Washingon Co., Indiana.7,8 She and Charles Albertus Boling were married on 26 April 1877 in Salem, Washington Co., Indiana.8 She died on 21 December 1940, at age 82, in Bentonville, Benton Co., Arkansas.8 She was buried in Bentonville Cemetery, Bentonville, Arkansas.9
Mary Ellen Payne had reference number 28681. She was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Indiana (1860, 1870); Wilson County, Kansas (1880); Benton County, Arkansas (1900, 1920.) She resided in Washington Co., Indiana; Altoona, Wilson Co., Kansas; Bentonville, Benton Co., Arkansas (1905, 1929.)9,10 In the 1860 Census children John W. Payne (age 7) and Mary E. Payne (age 1) are shown living with the family of Lewis and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne. For a time, several genealogies, including my own, showed John and Mary as the last two children of Lewis and Susannah. However, I'm pretty sure that John and Mary are the children of William Harvey and Harriet (Hatley) Payne, making them the grandchildren of Lewis and Susannah. This is not entirely rank speculation: 1) Harriett "Hattie" (Hartly) Payne died in late 1859. It is likely that her husband, William Harvey Payne, would have placed his youngest children with their grandparents. William, himself, probably not doing too well, died in 1861; 2) Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was certainly too old to be the mother of Mary and probably too old to be the mother of John; 3) On Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling's death certificate, her mother is identified as "Hattie;" 4) In all census records where parents' birth locations are shown, both John W. Payne and Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling say their parents were both born in Indiana. (Lewis Payne was born in Ohio and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was born in Tennessee, while William and Harriet (Hatley) Payne were both born in Indiana); 5) In the 1870 Census, John W. Payne is shown living with Jeremiah Payne. If I am correct about his parents, Jeremiah would be his uncle. Mary Ellen Payne was still living with her grandmother, Susannah (Dawalt) Payne; and 6) John W. Payne was married in 1874. He named his first son William H. Payne, after his father.
