Ethel Inez, daughter of Samuel O. and Dora L. Payne was born April 6, 1904 and departed this life December 20, 1924, age 20 years, 9 months and 24 days. She was united in marriage to Ellis O. Rodman on March 19, 1924 and to this union was born one daughter, Evelyn Marie, an infant but a few days old and who will be denied the blessings of a mothers love.
Besides her husband, father and mother, she leaves to mourn their loss two sisters, Eva Grace of this place and Lillian Mae McCoskey of Webster City, Iowa and two brothers Freddie Ray and William Lewis, both of this place, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Ethel confessed her Savior and was united with the Methodist church in 1920 while Rev. Leist was preaching at Conway. Both before and since that time she has been identified with church and community work and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand wherever it seemed to be needed. For several years she has been secretary as well as organist of the Conway Sunday school and with her cheerful disposition and regular attendance did much toward keeping up interest in Sunday school work. She was especially fond of music and was endowed with a beautiful voice. She graduated from the common school at South Boston about four years ago, where she endeared herself to her school mates and teachers alike, all of whom will feel a personal loss in her departure. Most of her short life was spent with her father and mother, however since her marriage she and her husband have lived at Oaklandon, Ind., a few miles north of Indianapolis. Her husband, father and mother were at her bedside when the end came.

John W. Payne was born on 17 November 1851 in Indiana.1,2 He and Elizabeth A. "Eliza" Huston were married on 8 January 1874 in Washington Co., Indiana.5 He died on 26 January 1893, at age 41.6,7 He died on 26 February 1893, at age 41.1 He was buried in Anderson-Payne Cemetery, Washington Co., Indiana.1 John W. Payne had reference number 18381. He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Indiana (1860 - 1880.) He was a Farm hand (1870); farmer (1880.)3,4 In the 1860 Census children John W. Payne (age 7) and Mary E. Payne (age 1) are shown living with the family of Lewis and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne. For a time, several genealogies, including my own, showed John and Mary as the last two children of Lewis and Susannah. However, I'm pretty sure that John and Mary are the children of William Harvey and Harriet (Hatley) Payne, making them the grandchildren of Lewis and Susannah. This is not entirely rank speculation: 1) Harriett "Hattie" (Hartly) Payne died in late 1859. It is likely that her husband, William Harvey Payne, would have placed his youngest children with their grandparents. William, himself, probably not doing too well, died in 1861; 2) Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was certainly too old to be the mother of Mary and probably too old to be the mother of John; 3) On Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling's death certificate, her mother is identified as "Hattie;" 4) In all census records where parents' birth locations are shown, both John W. Payne and Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling say their parents were both born in Indiana. (Lewis Payne was born in Ohio and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was born in Tennessee, while William and Harriet (Hatley) Payne were both born in Indiana); 5) In the 1870 Census, John W. Payne is shown living with Jeremiah Payne. If I am correct about his parents, Jeremiah would be his uncle. Mary Ellen Payne was still living with her grandmother, Susannah (Dawalt) Payne; and 6) John W. Payne was married in 1874. He named his first son William H. Payne, after his father.

HORIZON
“I watched a sail until it dropped from sight
Over the rounding sea. A gleam of white,
A last far-flashed farewell, and, like a thought
Slipt out of mind, it vanished and was lost.
“Yet to the helmsman standing at the wheel
Broad seas still stretched beneath the gliding keel,
Disaster? Change? He felt no slightest sign,
Nor dreamed he of that far horizon line,
“So may it be, perchance, when down the tide
Our dear ones vanish. Peacefully they glide
On level seas, nor mark the unknown bound
We call it death – to them ‘tis life beyond.”
