BASIC FACTS

Claude Elmer Taylor was born on 13 July 1890.1 He and Rosa Belle Walker were married on 10 December 1913.3 He died on 19 December 1960, at age 70, in Clark Co., Indiana.1,3 He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co., Indiana.2
Claude Elmer Taylor had reference number 28956. OBITUARY - The Salem Leader, Salem Indiana; December 21, 1960:

South Boston Man Killed, Two Others Injured In Truck Accidents
Claude E. Taylor, 70, a lifelong resident of Washington County, was instantly killed at 1:30 p. m. Monday in one of two unusual truck accidents to occur in the past few days.
Taylor died of a skull fracture and broken neck, according to Coroner E. M. Coots of Clark County.
The fatal injuries occurred when a truck load of logs with which he was riding, got out of control of the driver, Martin Collier of South Boston vicinity, and ran off the road into a dry creek. The logs shifted and rammed into the cab, crushing Taylor and pinning him into the cab so tightly that it required a wrecker to remove the logs and pull the bent and twisted cab apart before his body could be removed.
Collier was badly bruised and shaken but had no broken bones. The logs shifted enough to miss him, knocking the door of the cab open beside him. The first to arrive at the scene of the accident said Collier was out of the truck and was trying to use the log loading mechanism on the back of the truck to pull the logs from the cab and free Taylor. Collier was brought to the Washington County Memorial Hospital where he was reported very sore and stiff from bruises and injuries.
The accident occurred about two and a half miles north of Greenville on the Greenville-Pekin road. Tracks on the pavement indicated one wheel of the truck probably ran off the right side of the road, then was brought back onto the center of the highway before plunging off the right side at the end of a small bridge, the truck ramming down the bank into the creek. Seven large logs were on the truck and the weight may have started swaying, causing the driver to lose control, was a possible explanation voiced by some at the scene.
The Cooke Wrecker from Salem was called (and) worked for some time in freeing Taylor’s body from the wreckage. The wrecked truck was later moved to Salem.
Funeral Thursday
Funeral services for Claude E. Taylor will be held in the Weir Memorial Methodist Church in Salem at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Taylor was born in Washington county July 13, 1890, the son of Lewis and Margaret Waisner Taylor. On December 10, 1913 he married Rosa Belle Walker. She died July 7, 1957. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Hazel Taylor of Route 1, Salem and Mrs. Dorothy Anderson, Route 5, Salem, also two granddaughters, Carolyn Sue and Marilyn Lou Anderson.
He was a member of the Conoway Methodist Church and the Modern Woodmen of America. He had been a farmer.
Funeral services are in charge of the Dawalt Funeral Home where friends may call until the hour of the service. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. James Gentry and Earl Davis will officiate at the service.

Our Father stoops from his throne above,
To soothe and quiet us with his love.

And we have safety when he is nigh.
Can there be trouble which doth not share,
O, rest in peace for the Lord will care.

MISS TRESSIE D. ANDERSON

There is a reaper whose name is Death
And with his sickle keen
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath
And the flowers that grow between.

Tressie D. Anderson, daughter of I. L. and Amanda Kettrey Anderson, was born August 30, 1891, and departed this life August 16, 1933 aged 41 years, 11 months and 16 days.
She was taken to St. Joseph Infirmary Louisville for surgical treatment Wednesday morning and passed away at eight o’clock that evening.
Tressie was graduated from Salem High School with the class of 1912, and attended Hanover College and Central Normal College at Danville, from which she graduated. She began teaching in 1914 and has been one of Washington county’s successful teachers for fifteen years.
While she never married, she was always a lover of children and chose their guidance and instruction as her life’s work.
Early in life she united with the Church of Christ at Cross Roads, and lived a consistent Christian life to the end. She was loved by all who knew her and numbered her friends by the score.
Her father, mother, one brother and sister preceded her to the great beyond.
She leaves to mourn their loss one brother, Rodney G. of Salem, two sisters, Mrs. Gayle Williams of Remington, and Ruth Winslow of Salem, six nieces and five nephews, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
I cannot say and I will not say
That she is gone, she is just away.
