He was a Farmer - general farming (1910, 1920.)4,6 OBITUARY – The Salem Leader or The Salem Democrat; December 5, 1923:
Jacob D. Payne
On Friday evening about 9 o’clock at his home east of South Boston, with his loved ones about him, the life of Jacob D. Payne came to a peaceful ending.
Mr. Payne had been afflicted with heart trouble for a number of months but he did not allow this danger to cloud his spirits or keep him from his daily tasks; he seemed to be getting everything ready for his final departure, which came after only a few days serious illness.
Jacob Dawson Payne, youngest son of James H. and Sophia Blades Payne was born May 22, 1854 and died November 30, 1923, aged 69 years, 6 months and 8 days. He was married to Anna L. Tilford, September 30, 1875, with whom he lived happily until his death.
Mr. Payne is survived by his devoted wife and four children, three sons all of whom are married and are respected citizens. Wm. Lebert is a resident of this county; Claude B., Ross l., and the only daughter, Mrs. Stella Waisner all have homes in Jeffersonville. There are 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who will mourn the loss of a dear old grandpa: one brother only remains of this large family, Prof. J. Eli Payne of Brownstown.
For over 43 years Mr. Payne has been an honored member of the Masonic Fraternity belonging to the Salem Lodge.
He had never united with any church, but had confessed his Savior and was a firm believer that “the righteous should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Mr. Payne will be missed in the community where he has lived all his three-score and almost ten.
Honest in his convictions, respected by his neighbors, and beloved by his family, a good man is gone.
Oh, our loved ones how we miss them
In the heart and in the home;
How our fancies pause and listen
For the feet that never come.
Yet, what hand would break their slumber?
Who would call them back to life?
From the rest, and peace, and quiet
To a world of pain and strife!
The funeral was preached at Olive Branch, Sunday, Dec. 1st, by Rev. Martin Brock of Borden. The large gathering of people testified to the respect and esteem in which Mr. Payne and his family were held. The Masons attended in a body, taking charge after the funeral, at the church, and gave their beautiful and impressive service at the grave of their departed brother in the Olive Branch cemetery.
