ESSAY by Richard Carr Kitzmiller

Composition for Exhibition, Dec. 23, 1852

Sinking Creek, Sullivan County, Tenn., Dec. 4th 1852

Absurd & Superstitious Notions - result of Ignorance.
That ignorance has been the fruitful source of many and great evils, we think no intelligent being will for a moment deny; and as a consequence man has been led into many absurd and superstitious notions injurious to themselves. To attempt to enumerate or refute many of the false opinions and proverbs which are now extant, and are held as truth by perhaps a majority of the people, would be useless, and even ridiculous, so firmly has it been riveted in their minds. Though we live in a nation justly celebrated for her correct philosophical principals, and basks today in the sunshine of a wise and efficient government, yet we find many firmly adhering to, and believing in certain doctrines for which there is not a law nor a good reason in all nature. The various phenomena visible both in the heavens and upon the earth, have been looked upon by many with terror and apprehension, the cause of which they have attributed to the most variable and trivial circumstances. For instance, a total eclipse of the sun, or moon, or the appearance of a comet was regarded in the early ages of world, and is still looked upon by the vulgar with fear and consternation, as if some awful catastrophe was about to befall the world. The Aurora Borealis, those harmless and beautiful lights that illumine our northern heavens and fill with sublimity the mind of the intelligent observer, are looked upon, as being the prognostics of War, famine or national revolutions. Such are a few of the absurd and superstitious notions that have been entertained by the ignorant, relative to the celestial phenomena. But there are many equally erroneous opinions which are sources of terror and dismay to mankind, the causes of which are found upon the earth. We see many notwithstanding the diffusion of knowledge in our country, who draw omens from every trivial circumstance and occurrence in life; merely because some calamity or other may have happened soon after; and therefore they are considered ominous of such things. From this circumstance has risen a number of foolish proverbs and sayings, which are held by the ignorant and vulgar as certain truths. Even dreams, the crowing of the cuckoo, and the howling of the dog in the nighttime, the sudden extinction of a burning taper, and the cognizance of the oxen kind that the anniversary of Christmas is come; with a thousand other things are held and believed as real omens. To mention them all would be a task more fatiguing then to circumnavigate the globe. In all ages of the world we find some who have arrogated to themselves supernatural power, and received various names as wizard, fortuneteller, astrologer, necromancer, soothsayers, and witches, etc. The witch is said to have the peculiar power of transforming herself into a cat, hare, or anything to suit the occasion; and with a bridle on a broomstick or splinter traverse the air with perfect ease. Thus it appears that atmospheric phenomena, together with the actions of animals, and the imagination, have furnished sources of serious alarm to the ignorant. The supernatural powers attributed to certain ignorant old women (for no others are witches) are extremely absurd and foolish. With many it can hardly be believed, that the earth is round, and revolves on an axis; that the sun is the center around which the planets revolve; governed by great and fix laws as unchangeable as God, but let the absurdities of witchcraft be presented and they swallow them down at once. But there is one consoling thought that the foolish notions are fast passing away ~
R. C. Kitzmiller

Rev. S. Pierce DeVault, Nearing 80, Hopes for 10 More Years Of Service To Upstate

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The Rev. S. Pierce DeVault, retired Baptist minister, contributes some reminiscences of early upper East Tennessee as he nears his 80th birthday.)

By S. PIERCE DeVAULT
I would like to ask you a big and important question. If you suddenly realized that on the 31st day of October you would be looking right in the face of your eightieth year, how would you feel and what would you do?
If you were in my place I think you would thank the good Lord for all his blessings and protecting care and then ask Him for more busy years.
How would you like to take a quick look at these past active years? I was born out on Boones Creek in the stone house built by Martin Kitzmiller and now owned by the Pierces. I thought that house was the very center of all first things in Tennessee.
Daniel Boone came over the mountain and down the Watauga to the mouth of Boones Creek (two miles east of us) where he located his base camp while exploring Tennessee and Kentucky. Then, while on his way to what is now Kingsport, he cut on a beech tree (two miles west of us) “D. Boone ‘cilled a ‘bar’ on this tree in 1760.” This is the date which fixed all dates in early Tennessee history.
Then, nine years later William Bean (who had been with Boone on a former trip) came down the Boone trail, leading and locating one hundred families. He then built his own cabin on Boone’s former location.
During the first year in this cabin Bean’s youngest child (Russell) was born and known to be the first white child born on Tennessee soil. There is also another historical marker (one mile east of the Bean cabin marker) to the grave of the first settler killed by the Indians.
When Russell Bean wanted a cabin of his own he went up the creek (half a mile) to the little settlement (now known as Flourville) and built his big three story rock and log house after the plan of a fort against the Indians. This house is still standing and is in good condition.
When the Revolution broke out in 1776 the men and boys (over fourteen) of the Boones Creek settlement met those from all other settlements at Sycamore Shoals (this side of Elizabethton). Here they organized as the George Washington Military District and set out for King’s Mountain in North Carolina.
Later, North Carolina rewarded the settlements by changing the name to Washington County with Jonesboro as the County Seat for all the territory from the mountain to the Mississippi.
When the war was over, North Carolina agreed to deed this territory to the new Government on the condition that the soldiers could pay for land with the scrip paid to them for services in the war. This plan of buying land with scrip brought a multitude of soldiers to Tennessee.
When my great great grandfather, Henry DeVault (the French Hugenot and soldier up in Pennsylvania) heard of the soldier plan he added money to his scrip and bought land for half of his big family. He bought (on his first trip) from John Bean 640 acres lying on both sides of the Watauga – the location was later known as “DeVault’s Ford” on the road from Johnson City to Bristol.
Here he settled Valentine and Frederick, who later married the Range sisters. The brothers built a house sufficiently large for both families to live as one family for a few years. The Bean cabin was moved to the new location and rebuilt for a smokehouse. It is still standing and in general use.
Frederick later sold out to Valentine, bought land at Leesburg, and built the DeVault Tavern on the Greeneville – Leesburg – Halls Ford – Blountville – Bristol Turnpike. This Tavern is in good condition and the home of a descendant.
Valentine built a brick house on the location of the partnership house. This brick house and some of the land on the north side of the Watauga is now owned by Mrs. Adelaide DeVault and family.
Now, this Valentine’s son, John married the daughter of Martin Kitzmiller (who built the “stonehouse”) and their son, Martin DeVault, married Annis Roller, a sister of Dave and Will who had a great part in New Kingsport.
Walter DeVault, now of Knoxville, and I are the sons of the above Martin and Annis.
Now, you can see I was brim full of Early Tennessee History and my great ambition was to own (some day) a great big farm with good fences and lots of fine stock.
Then, one day we heard there would be a revival meeting at Hodges School house (two miles below us) during the Christmas Holidays. Rev. Asa Routh (an old man) who had spent much of his life holding meetings from Bristol to Knoxville would do the preaching. He seemed to have only one text: “Repentance toward God and Faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” – Acts 20:21. It appeared to me that he knew the whole Bible by heart for he explained (day by day) each part of his text with other scripture.
I got troubled about my relationship with God and my lack of any relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Miss Nora Bowers (my former teacher) saw that I was troubled. She asked me to go with her to the front bench as a sign to the Christians that I wanted them to talk to me and pray for me. The service closed without my having any inside evidence that the Lord had saved me.
When we got home I slipped away to the barn and there all alone with God I told Him that if He could accept my repentance and give me to His only begotten Son for a spiritual birth, then I would do my best to do anything Jesus wanted me to do. Before I got these inward feeling expressed in words, Jesus gave me the inward assurance that He had saved me, and I have never doubted it.
When I got back to the house and in the Kitchen door, my mother, looked at me and said: “Oh, Pierce, the Lord has saved You.” How did she know?
When Brother Routh baptized me along with 15 others he said: “I am praying and I hope all of you Christians will pray that the Lord will call this young man to be a minister for Him.” This shocked me, but I did not say a word about it to anyone except the Lord.
I became a Charter member of our New Boones Creek Baptist Church and helped to erect the new house right near my father’s new home.
During all this time the Lord kept me conscious that I must give up my big farm plan and dedicate my life to His cause. Then, one day I told the Church that I had surrendered to the Lord’s call. The members told me they had been praying for this victory, and then they licensed me to preach. The clerk (Mr. Dave Bowers) gave me a copy of this action and I have kept it and cherished the love and faith of my boyhood friends unto this day.
This article is getting too long so I will step it up to high gear for I do hope you can read to the end.
I went to Richmond College (Virginia) and in the pastorate, to Louisville Seminary (Kentucky) and in the pastorate, and then for three years with the State Executive Board of Indiana as General Field Worker.
When the call from the Third Baptist Church of Nashville came, I was happy to get back to the South. I was pastor of this church and others nearby for twenty-five and a half years.
During this time I served a term as president of the Nashville Pastors Conference, a term as president of the State Conference, and over fifteen years as a member of the State executive Board.
Then, three months before my 25th birthday (in the Conference) I was asked to get ready to use the special hour in giving a word picture of the changes I had observed.
When the members heard that I would soon move back to my native Johnson City, the conference appointed a committee to express their opinion of me and my work; and to have it put in the Baptist and Reflector the week that I moved.
We arrived in Johnson City in the early spring of 1939. Then, one day I called Mrs. DeVault to come and see the invitation to preach the Baccalaureate Sermon for the Boones Creek School, Now there is no way to describe how happy I was to have this honor from my own boyhood school.
The pastors and churches were nice and thoughtful of us. I soon had calls for Sunday supplies, meeting, teaching in Preachers schools, and two calls to the Pastorate.
Missionary Trivett and I started the experiment of renting a cottage at the Ridgecrest Assembly (North Carolina) and inducing church workers to attend one week. When Brother Trivett moved to another association, Mrs. DeVault helped me finish the experiment with the proof that our Association needed a big cottage of its own for the full three months. The executive Board bought the selected property and equipped it to take care of eight persons, day and night. Then the churches paid in the ten thousand dollars in two years.
The executive Board was nice to Mrs. DeVault and me, and proved it by placing our pictures in the cottage office, and voting us free entertainment every summer for as long as we were able to make the trip.
It was time for me to retire and take my little monthly check, but I was allowed to continue supplying for pastors and filling in for churches between the leaving of one pastor and the coming of another. Up to now I have supplied 59 churches in this and the Watauga Association and have been interim pastor five times.
Now, if the good Lord gives me extra years He will also direct me into some kind of work which will be in line with the past 60 years of service.

My Dear Hattie
Your letter just received. I have been looking for it ever since Sunday's mail, but no letter until this morning. It is raining and trade is quiet today so I will ans. your letter. I am thinking of coming up to see you Sunday but can't say for certain that I will come but you need not be surprised if I come. I think you are just as cranky as can be about coming down here. I have known as good girls as you are to come to Knoxville to get ready to marry and their fellow lived here, but that is all right. I will talk to you about that when I see you. I don't see why you didn't tell me how you had things planned so I could have been studying about it. There was lots of differences in your other letter and the last one. You are just about as changeable as I am if not a little more so. I have not any idea how you have got the thing planed but I will tell you right now that if it doesn't suit me you will know it. I had about decided to make a very quiet wedding out of it. Will tell you my plans when I come. Guess they are all together different than yours.

BIOGRAPHY - History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Counties, Indiana copyright 1884 Goodspeed Brothers and Company, Chicago

Daniel Dawalt, a prominent citizen of Franklin Township, and a native of Washington Township, this county, was born July 8, 1812, being the ninth child in a family of twelve children born to Henry and Elizabeth (Gross) Dawalt, who were natives of York County, Penn., and Rockingham County, Va., both of German descent. The father came to this State and county in the year 1808, and first settled on Section 15 in Washington Township, where he remained, with the exception of four years, until his death, which occurred when he had reached the ripe old age of about ninety-one years; Mrs. Dawalt died, aged about seventy-five years. In his settlement here he was commissioned Captain of the militia by Territorial Gov. Harrison. He received several promotions, and at the time of his last connection with the service he held the office of Colonel of his regiment, and was at the head of his company at the time of the Pigeon Roost massacre. That happened about night, and they pursued them nearly to Brownstown, in Jackson County, where they surprised the Indians. Daniel remained at home assisted his parents on the farm until he attained the age of twenty-four years. He received a limited education in the primitive log schoolhouses of his day. February 11, 1836, his marriage with Sarah Tatlock was solemnized, and to their union twelve children have been born, of which these five are now living; Francis M., who married Nancy Coombs; Catherine, now Mrs. Richard M. Johnson; James B., whose wife was Margaret Thompson; and Samuel, who married Mary Thompson. Our subject's occupation has always been farming, and he has been quite successful in that pursuit. He now owns 347 acres of well improved land. Mr. Dawalt's son Jackson gave up his life for his country at Rome, Ga. He was a member of the Sixty-sixth Indiana, Company F. Mr. Dawalt is a member of the Masonic fraternity; in politics he is a Democrat, and he manifests a good live interest in the political affairs of the community.

Note: There are many factual errors in the above biography.
Note #2: Jackson Dawalt died August 29, 1864. During the war he wrote a number of letters home and we have copies of some of them.

COURT DOCUMENTS
On at least two occasions Daniel Dawalt was assigned gardianship of minor children. On 19 Jan 1856 he was assigned gardianship of Ransom A. Hall, son of Aaron Hall, deceased. In the 1860 Census, Ransom Hall is shown living with the family of Daniel Dawalt. On 2 Feb 1865 Daniel was assigned gardianship of William W. Franklin, son of Mary Franklin, deceased.

OBITUARY - June 12, 1898

Daniel Dawalt
The oldest Mason in Washington county and one among the oldest residents, died at his home in Franklin township last Sunday. Daniel Dawalt was born in this county July 8, 1812, and was 85 years, 11 months and 4 days old at his death. His parents came to this county in 1808, from York county, Pa., and both attained a ripe old age - the paternal parent dying at 92 and the maternal at 75. Daniel worked on his parents farm until 24 years of age when he married Sarah Tatlock. He never quit farming but followed the occupation his long life and was very successful in that pursuit. He was, as is stated above, the oldest Mason in this county and was buried with Masonic honors Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
It was Col. Henry Dawalt, the father of Daniel, who, as one of three commissioners, laid out the town of Salem in 1814, two years after the birth of Daniel Dawalt. Gen. Clark and John Zink were Germans. It had been proposed to name our town Vernon, but Zink and Dawalt could not pronounce it Vernon, but Wernon. A compromise was made and the place was named Salem.
It was Col. Henry Dawalt, too, who in 1812 raised an army of men and went in pursuit of the Indians who had murdered several of our citizens. The Colonel and his volunteers lost the trail of the red men at Columbus, but on their return, and near Brownstown, they were fired upon by an squad of Indians and John Zink, another of the commissioners who laid out the town of Salem, was shot through the bowels and mortally wounded. He was brought home and died in a few days. His remains repose on the farm now owned by Jeptha Morris.
What a change has occurred since 1812! And what will it be in the next 86 years? Shall we continue to prosper and grow greater? And is permitted the departed to return from across the dark river and visit the old farm and town, the old hills and streams?
Daniel Dawalt was the father of fourteen children, three of whom, only, survive, viz: James B., Samuel B. and Mrs. Richard M. Johnson.
He has living 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He loved the Masonic order of which he had a continuous membership of 56 years. Five years ago he was stricken with paralysis but bore his sufferings with unusual great patience. As husband, he was kind and patient; as a neighbor, he was generous to a fault; as a man he was honest. His wife, now nearing 82 years, his three children and 31 grand and great-grand-children have the sympathies of his neighbors and friends.

They were the parents of fourteen children of whom only three survive, two sons and one daughter. Catherine (Dawalt) Johnson, James B. and Samuel Dawalt. There are twenty-two grand children and nine great grand children now living. He joined the Masonic fraternity nearly fifty-six years ago and was always a faithful and consistent member of the order. He was stricken with paralysis over five years ago. He bore his sufferings with great patience, never complining of anyone. He was a kind and patient husband, an indulgent father, a good neighbor, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to the sick and afflected, and last but not least he was strictly an honest man in every sence of the word. OBITUARY #5 - The Salem Democrat, June 24, 1898

The failure of the Deomcrat of last week to note the death of Daniel Dawalt on the 12 inst., was a regrettable oversight. Mr. Dawalt would have been 86 years of age on the 12th of next month and besides being one of the county's oldest citizens was the oldest Free Mason. The maiden name of his aged wife, who survives him, was Sarah Tatlock and she is nearly 82 years of age. This aged couple were were the parents of 14 children, only three of whom are living. Twenty-two grand-children and nine great-grand children are also numbered among their descendants. Mr. Dawalt was a good citizen and died respected by all who knew him.

Indiana, Washington Co.
February 5th 1844

Dear Cousin and Friends:

We again, for the second time, write you a letter to inform you that we are all well at this time, and do most sincerely hope that when these few lines are received by you that they will find you all in the same state of health.
We have had a rainy and muddy winter here. It has been very moderate until about the 26th of January, then it changed very cold, with some snow and have been very stormy -- almost impossible, for in many places Waggoners are obliged to throw down the fences on the roads and make the best of their way through the farms. Our crops for the past year are very good, except wheat was not as good as usual.
Pork is $2.00 per hundred net weight; wheat 56c and 65c per bushel; corn 75c and $1.00 per bu; Barrell flour, $4.00 and $5.00; Oats 12c and 20c per bu; new bacon $3.50 per hog round. The measles are in every section of this country and are spreading in deffernt parts of the state. but happy to say that no deaths have occurred from the disease -- no other diseases prevail.
We cannot say when any of us will visit Tennessee. For in the spring we will be very busy and Father is going to Pennsylvania and there will be no chance for us to leave home. We have not heard from any of you since last winter (1843) and would like very much for you to write us and inform us how all of you are doing. I remain single yet, but I have a strong notion to see which is the best, the Single or the married life, and to choose a girl and try what I can do in the married life, as I have lived a single life this long. We wish you to give us our best respects to all our relatives and to your friends, also I do not know as I have anything more to write you.

This from your most affectionate Cousin,

John Dawalt

(This letter written Feburary 5, 1844, mentioned that he might get married -- he did in December of the same year.)

Henry Dawalt, Jr., had reference number 700. Newland report that Henry was born in Salem, Washington County, Indiana. Newland had thought that Henry's parents had moved to Indiana in 1803 and I think he believed that is where Henry was born. There is now quite a bit of evidence that Henry's parents did not move to Indiana until sometime after their first five children were born. I, therefore, am showing Henry's birthplace as Tennessee.

BASIC FACTS

Catharine Dawalt was born in Indiana.5 She was born on 4 July 1798 in Tennessee.7,1 She was born about 1800 in Tennessee.1 She and John Jackson were married on 10 May 1821 in Washington Co., Indiana.8,9,10 She died on 20 November 1883, at age 85, in Bridgeport, Clark Co., Indiana.11,12 She was buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Clark Co., Indiana.11
Catharine Dawalt had reference number 701. She was enumerated on the census in Clark County, Indiana (1850 - 1880.) Catharine's birth date comes from her tombstone inscription. The 1850 Census gives her birth year at about 1802 in Tennessee, the 1860 Census giver her birth year at about 1800 in Tennessee, the 1870 gives her birth year as 1798 in Tennessee and the 1880 Census giver her birth year at about 1799 in Pennsylvania. This date agrees with her obituary.
Newland DeVault reported that one reference to the family said that they lived in Louisville, Kentucky. From where the children were born, it is clear that they lived most of their lives in Clark County, Indiana. Although Clark County is near Louisville, I have found nothing to suggest that they ever lived in Louisville.
