Adam Giesler, Jr.1,2,3
M, #13186, b. 13 February 1787, d. 18 March 1868
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Adam Giesler, Jr., was born on 13 February 1787 in Frederick Co., Maryland.4 He was born on 13 February 1787 in Pennsylvania.2 He was born on 13 February 1787 in Washington Co., Maryland.5,4 He and Anna Marie "Mary" Davault were married about 1815.4 He died on 18 March 1868, at age 81, in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6,5 He was buried in Giesler-DeVault-Feathers Cemetery, Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., Tennessee (V.)5,7 Adam Giesler, Jr., had reference number 13454. He was a Farmer (1850, 1860.)2,3 He was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1850, 1860.) Note on spelling & pronunciation from Pamela (Giesler) Smith
The name on early Pennsylvania records is shown with both G and K as Giesler/Kiesler (Geesler/Keesler) or Geisler (Gisler). Adam Sr. could not write his own name and because the clerks mostly wrote the name with the "ee" sound, we can be fairly certain that's how he pronounced his name. A few clerks and descendants later changed the spelling to the German "Geisler". Besides a general lack of spelling standardization there was the issue of Anglicization (and de-Anglicization) of German names. If our Pennsylvania German ancestors moved west to Adams County or south to Maryland, where many neighbors, clerks and census takers were "English," names might be intentionally or inadvertently changed. When Jacob Keesler/Geesler of Manheim in York County, Pennsylvania moved down to Maryland in 1770 he became Jacob Kessler and his children who moved with him from then on were Kessler/Kesler on records.
Early handwriting sometimes faint or smudged - dots above 'i' disappear and what might have been Geisler/Giesler becomes Geesler or even Gusler on indexes. The 'G' written like a 'g' looks like a 'Y' and so the name also found transcribed as Yeisler, Yessler, etc. The German way of writing the 'ss' sound was a long 'ff' and so the name also found as Giffler, Gepler. If the "ie" or ''ee'' close together you get Gusler and even Yusler. I think some members of this line kept the "K" and some used the "G" spelling. These people were still speaking German when they moved to Tennessee and kept to themselves and their community. The Germans from Pennsylvania had the Piney Flat Brethren Church in Maryland and in Sullivan County, Tennessee where they spoke German. Descendants say the John Giesler Sr.'s family still spoke German in Missouri and daughters taught the German language to their children.
Adam Giesler, Jr. Farm in Sullivan County, Tennessee
Adam Sr. purchased 300 acres in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1793.
Deed of Warranty - George Emmert to Adam Gissler of Sullivan Co. & Western Territory for L240 current money sells 300 acres on South side Holston River adjacent Sharp and Smith lines. Registered 23 July 1793, (Sullivan County, Tennessee Deed Book 2, pages 596-597, dated 3 Jun 1793, Film #0024836.)
The land was on the 1797 tax rolls. In 1814 he bought an additional 228 acres. He gave his son Adam Jr. 138 acres before he died.
Sullivan Co., Tennessee Deed Records:
Deed BK10, pg. 240 - (film #0972708)
13 Aug 1817 - Adam Giesler jr. was gifted 138 acres of land from his father adj. to the parcels given to his older brother John Sr. and sister Anna.
Note: The following, with the 50 acres he had already, gives him a total of 188 acres of land at this time.

3 Sept 1818 - Deed BK12, pg 113 - State of TN to Adam Giesler #5935 - 20a
3 Sept 1818 - Deed BK12, pg. 114- State of TN to Adam Giesler #5936 - 15a
3 Sept 1818 - Deed BK12, pg. 115- State of TN to Adam Giesler #5937 - 15a
Note: These are three separate parcels of land in Sullivan Co. acquired from the state of Tennessee which total 50 acres, shown as being purchased by Adam Geisler. These 3 deeds, recorded in Deed BK 12 each have the notation at the bottom dated 6 Nov 1837 that the taxes have been paid on these parcels. I believe this is because he needed to verify his ownership in order to sell the land.
Accompanying these deeds are Surveyor's Certificates #1643 for 20 acres, #1644, and #1645 for 15 acres each to total 50 acres of land in Sullivan Co., TN - surveyed 19 April 1815 and filed 23 May 1815 by the Registrar of East Tennessee. These records available from the TN State Archives in Nashville or by copying from LDS filmed land records.
From the tax records and the deed records we see that Adam Giesler jr. left PA and traveled to TN sometime before the 19th of April in 1815. From the ages of his children we know he married to Mary Devault the same year. He probably would have raised a home and put in a crop while courting Mary and when the crop was in and home was ready - about the fall of 1815, he and Mary were married.
Sullivan Co., TN Deed Records, cont'd:
Deed BK 13 - pg. 19 Aug 1837 - Adam Giesler sold the 138 acres in 19 Aug 1837 to Robert Hughes - that which he rec'd from his father in 1817.

MARY
Wife of Adam Giesler
Born Nov. 2, 1795

(This inscription was recorded by Robert Elsea in 1987 and reported in the June, 1988 issue of the Holston Pastfinder. The Bible of Jacob and Catherine (Morrell) Gielser says that Mary was born on Nov. 2, 1795 and died on May 26, 1876, aged 80 years, 4 months and 24 days. The Bible's arithmatic is off by two months. The arithmatic on the stone is also off by two months. One thing is for certain - Mary may have died on March 26 or May 26.)

ADAM MARY DEVAULT
1787 -- 1868 1796 -- 1876
MARY
1849 -- 1880
Note: The Mary (1849 - 1880) is possibly their granddaughter, Mary Catherine (Akard) Giesler, wife of William Hicks Giesler, however, she is supposed to be buried in Riley Cemetery, Sullivan Co., Tennessee. A number of genealogies have reported that Adam and Mary had a son, William A., born about 1825 and died before 1860. This is an error caused by the miss-reading of the 1850 census. The William A. mentioned in the census is William Akard husband of Adam and Mary's daughter, Rebecca. Two-year-old Mary is the daughter of William and Rebecca. He left a will on 30 November 1865.1
