"Alvin and Nora were farmers. Alvin ordered seed for the neighbors from the Ferris Seed Company. He was such a good customer that Mr. Ferris sent him some bean seed and said "My friend, try these in your area. If they do good, send me a name and you can name them." Granddaddy named them Tennessee Green Pod. (Every gardener in Washington County, Tennessee has heard of Tennessee Green Pod Beans.)
Alvin also used to get up excursion on the railroad to Charleston, South Carolina. If he got a certain number to go he got to go for free.
Alvin was a Sunday School teacher at Boone's Creek Christian Church."

Their story can be found in the book "Robert Young, Sr., Patriot and Pioneer," by Dessie Little Simmons. Alfred and Rebecca had property and lived on what is now Carroll Creek Road. Their house can be seen where the Brown's Mill Road and Carroll Creek Road meet, just north of present day Walmart Super Store in Johnson City, Tennessee.

MRS. NORA KEEFAUVER
Mrs. Nora Crouch Keefauver, 88, died unexpectedly at her home in the Boones Creek section at 4:30 p. m. yesterday. She collapsed in the yard of her home, apparently a victim of a heart attack.
The widow of A. V. Keefauver, who died in 1930, Mrs. Keefauver was a member of a pioneer Washington county family. She was a daughter of the late Alfred and Rebecca Young Crouch. She was a member of Boones Creek Church of Christ for the past 75 years and active in numerous church activities.
Survivors include five sons, Bob, Bryan, Dewey, Alfred and Paul Keefauver, all of Rt. 4, Jonesboro; four daughters, Mrs. C. T. Young, Mrs. Elmer E. Archer and Mrs. Beverly Thomas, all of Johnson City; and Miss Mayme Keefauver, Route 4, Jonesboro.
Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be Thursday at 2:30 p. m. in Boones Creek Church of Christ, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Steve Morton will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Russell crouch, Watland Crouch, Boone Clark, John Broyles, Clyde Broyles and Jack Keefauver.
Kiser Funeral Home is in charge.

Son of the late Alvin and Nora Crouch Keefauver, he was a deputy sheriff in the county for 30 years, a retired farmer and a member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

Mayme Keefauver, 81, Boones Creek community, died at 6 p.m. yestarday after suffering an apparent heart attack at her home.
A native of Washington County, Miss Keefauver was the daughter of the late Alvin and Nora Crouch Keefauver and was a life member of the Boones Creek Church of Christ.
She was a retired school teacher and had taught in the Washington County school system for 34 years.
Survivors include three brothers, Alfred of the home, Dewey and Paul, both of Boones Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Archer and Mrs. Vona Thomas, both of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephew.

OBITUARY #2

Keefauver, Mayne - Funeral services for Mayne Keefauver, 81, Boones Creek community, who died at her home Monday afternoon, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Boones Creek Church of Christ. Alvin B. Covell, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pall bearers will be Joe Keefauver, Jack Keefauver, Billy Joe Keefauver, Wayland Crouch, Lee Clark and Charles Dyer. Ladies of the church will serve as flower bearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and removed to the church one hour before the service. Kiser-Woodall Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, daughter of the late Alvin and Nora Crouch Keefauver. She was a member of Brookmead Church of Christ. Her husband, Elmer E. Archer died in 1953.
Surviving are: her daughter, Mrs. J. C. Muse of Mountain City; sons, Phil, Ft. Sam Houston, Tex.; Kenneth and Fred, both of Kingsport, Warren, Johnson City, and Paul Archer of the home; a sister, Mrs. Beverly Thomas, Johnson City, Route 4; brothers, Paul, Alf and Dewey, all of Jonesboro, Route 5; 9 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Bell Hylton Keefauver, 75, of Boones Creek, mother of Joe Keefauver, widely-known stockman and Angus cattle breeder, died Wednesday morning at Tampa, Florida.
Mrs. Keefauver had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Dyer, in Tampa since late February. She had been an invalid for about eight years.
Surviving are three sons, Weldon, a Tennessee Eastman Corporation employe who lives at Bluff City; Joe, Kingsport, and Jack Keefauver, Boones Creek; and four daughters, Miss Mary Keefauver, Boones Creek; Mrs. W. A. Hill, Boones Creek; Mrs. C. C. Dyer, Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. R. L. Reid, Knoxville.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body will be brought back to Tennessee for burial.

Kathleen Keefauver Hill, 86, Appalachian Christian Village, died Saturday in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a daughter of the late Joseph D. and Belle Hylton Keefauver.
Mrs. Hill was a member of Boones Creek Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.A. “Bill” Hill, two sons, one brother and one sister.
Survivors include one son, Robert Hill; two sisters, Ruby Reid, Johnson City, and Louise Dyer, Los Angeles; two brothers, Jack and Joe Keefauver, both of Johnson City; two grandsons; six nieces; and four nephews.
Appalachian (926-2112).

Note: Willard was first married to Dorothy Helen Brown. Two of the three sons (Willard Alvin Hill, Jr. and Robert W. Hill) mentioned in the above obituary belonged to Willard and Dorothy. (In the 1940 Census, Dorothy states that she has only had two children.) The mother of the third son (deceased in the above obituary) remains unknown. It is very possible that there was no third son and this is just an error in Kathleen's obituary.

He was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, Robert, New Orleans, La., and two grandchildren.

Weldon Faw Keefauver, 80, Rt. 13, Gray, died Thursday in North Side Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Keefauver was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Joseph D. and Belle Hylton Keefauver. He was preceded in death by a sister.
He was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman, where he was employed for 25 years.
Mr. Keefauver was a lifelong member of the Boones Creek Church of Christ.

She was the widow of Weldon Faw Keefauver. She was a teacher in Washington County, a homemaker, and a member of Boone's Creek Christian Church for 70 years, where she taught the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class. She was a member of Ladies Home Demonstration Club. Surviving are a son, Billy Joe Keefauver of Gray, Tenn.; two daughters, Martha K. Warren of Gray and Eleanor K. McFarland of South Boston, Va.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 8 p.m. in Boone's Creek Christian Church by Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home in Jonesborough, TN. Minister Charles Reece will officiate. Burial will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Boone's Creek Christian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Keefauver was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Hall in 1988; two brothers; and a sister. Among survivors are brother-in-law Joe D. Keefauver of Johnson City; and sisters-in-law Ruby Keefauver of Johnson City, and Mrs. Jack Keefauver and Blanche Boy, both of Gray. For the time being, I believe that this is incorrect.

MRS. LOUISE K. DYER
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Mrs. Louise Keefauver Dyer, 81, Laguna Niguel, died Thursday, Nov, 12, 1987, after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Washington County, Tenn., but had lived in California more than 30 years.
Mrs. Dyer was a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cecil Dyer, in 1973.;
Survivors include one son, Charles Grayson Dyer, Jonesborough, Tenn.; three daughters, Margie Bougham, Laguna Niguel, Julie Leonard, Waterford, Wis., and Cecelia Lots, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Ruby Reid, Johnson City, Tenn.; two brothers, Joe and Jack Keefauver, both of Johnson City; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in California.
