SonJacob Thomas Keefauver+ (b. 15 February 1878, d. 9 March 1964)

BASIC FACTS

William Shelton "Shelton" Keefauver was born on 18 October 1840 in Gray, Washington Co., Tennessee.1,3,5,6 He and Edna Evelyn Hunt were married on 15 January 1865 in Washingon Co., Tennessee.1,5 He and Mary Rice Douglas were married on 13 September 1904.1 He died on 3 March 1914, at age 73, in Boones Creek, Washington Co., Tennessee.1,5,6 He was buried in Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee.7,2
William Shelton "Shelton" Keefauver had reference number 6774. He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850, 1910.) He was a Farmer - general farming (1910.)4 Civil War, Confederate Army, Tennessee, 60th Infantry Regiment, Company E, Sergeant.8 Shelton was enrolled at Fordtown, Tennessee on 25 SEP 1862 when a major Confederate expedition was sent into eastern Tennessee to enforce the conscription laws. He was 22 years old and signed up for 3 years service as required under the Confederate Conscription Act passed in April 1862. On 7 NOV 1862, he was enrolled as a Private in Company E, Crawford's Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. The footnote to the first card in his file states that this regiment was organized with 11 companies on 1 OCT 1862 and mustered into Confederate service on 7 NOV 1862.
Shelton was promoted to 3rd Sergeant prior to 1 JAN 1863 and was captured at the battle of Big Black Bridge on 17 MAY 1863. This was a holding action to allow the battered remains of General Pemberton's army retreating from the battle of Champion Hill (aka Baker's Creek) fought the day before. Some 4,400 Confederate POWs captured at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge were placed aboard river steamers and sent north on 25 MAY 1863. They stopped briefly at Memphis where the guard was changed, and then proceeded up river to Cairo, Illinois. Here they transferred to trains of the Illinois Central Railroad and were delivered to Camp Morton. The 187 officers were separated out and sent to Johnson's Island. The enlisted men were divided into two groups and forwarded to Fort Delaware. They traveled overland to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia by rail where they again boarded river steamers and were delivered down the Delaware River to Pea Patch Island and Fort Delaware. Shelton KEEFAUVER was in the second group which arrived at Fort Delaware on 15 JUN 1863.
The Dix-Hill Cartel was on its last legs, but the first shipment of POWs from Camp Morton were in luck. They were paroled at Fort Delaware on 3 JUL 1863 and delivered on 6 JUL 1863 to Confederate authorities for exchange. A second shipment was paroled a day or two later, sent to Fort Monroe, but turned back en route and returned to Fort Delaware. This signaled the collapse of the Dix-Hill Cartel. Shelton KEEFAUVER was among these returned POWs. A smaller shipment of men who were deemed unfit for duty (sick and disabled) were paroled on 30 JUL 1863 and delivered to Confederate authorities for exchange on 31 JUL 1863. Shelton was among these fortunate few.
Shelton's CMSR contains a pay record at Camp Lee, Virginia dated 5 SEP 1863. Camp Lee was the camp for paroled and exchanged prisoners in Richmond, Virginia and Shelton received two months back pay (1 JUL 1863 to 31 AUG 1863) indicating that he had been declared exchanged and returned to duty. The stated reason for payment by Camp Lee authorities was that his regiment "is now in Alabama."
Shelton rejoined the army and was marked present for duty on 13 SEP 1864 near Jonesboro, Tennessee with at detachment of the 60th, 61st, and 62nd Regiments, Tennessee Infantry under the command of Captain L. H. Denny. The final document in his CMSR is a record of his taking the Oath of Allegiance at Chattanooga, Tennessee on 5 JUN 1865 after the war was over. The footnote to this last record card states that it was a "Roll of Rebel Deserters and voluntarily surrendered prisoners of war who took the Oath of Allegiance at Chattanooga, Tennessee." This statement is not as bad as it sounds!
Shelton KEEFAUVER appears to fall into the category of Confederate soldiers whose units disbanded upon hearing of the surrenders and who then went to their homes. These men not paroled at a specific duty station under the main surrenders were required to report into a Federal parole center nearest their homes to be accounted for and released on parole. For whatever the reason, Federal authorities at Chattanooga thought it a good idea to administer the Oath of Allegiance as well. Shelton was listed as a resident of Washington County, Tennessee which is in the far northeastern corner of Tennessee and a further north than Chattanooga. It is not clear where he was stationed in the final days of the war but perhaps in northern Alabama or northern Georgia with Chattanooga on the way home. By 5 JUN 1865, there was no Confederate army standing in the field anywhere.
