Edwin Rathburn Hillman1,2
M, #96, b. 15 May 1840, d. 29 September 1922
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Edwin Rathburn Hillman was born on 15 May 1840 in Pennsylvania.3,2 He and Emily Cordelia Rogers were married on 17 November 1863 in Dubuque Co., Iowa.2,4 He died on 29 September 1922, at age 82, in Bayard, Morrill Co, Nebraska.3,2 He was buried on 1 October 1922 in Bayard Cemetery, Bayard, Morrill Co, Nebraska. Edwin Rathburn Hillman had reference number 96. Edwin's death certificate gave his place of birth as Shemung County, Pennsylvania. It turns out that Edwin was from Pennsylvania (probably Bradford County) and his father was from Chemung County, New York. This little bit of misdirection took several years to unravel.
In the obituary below it says that Edwin left behind two brothers. As near as I can tell this is correct. The two brothers still living were Clarence in Kansas and Samuel in Oklahoma. However, Edwin's brother Thaddeus had died in California less than two months before. I wonder if the family had received word of Thaddeus' death or was it just that they had not heard from him in a long time and presumed that he was dead. All three of Edwin's sisters were still living at the time of his death and none of them were not mentioned in his obituary. The obituary goes on to say that Edwin had seven children living at the time of his death. The 1920 Census for Hooker Twp., Gage Co., Nebraska says that Emily had 9 children of which 7 were still alive. Apparently they lost two children in infancy.
In 1993 my sister and I were sent on a mission to Nebraska to locate the graves of Edwin and Emily Hillman. Our mom thought that they were buried in Bayard Cemetery. We soon learned that the only Hillmans listed as being buried in Bayard Cemetery were C. R. Hillman and Alva Hillman. It was many years before I learned that C. R. Hillman was Edwin's brother Clarence Romine Hillman and Alva Hillman was Clarence's son. As I eventually learned, neither C. R. nor Alva were buried in Bayard Cemetery. I was finally able to locate the original mortuary records and determine that the graves assigned to C. R. and Alva were actually the graves of Edwin and Emily. I still don't know what caused the mix-up. It is possible that C. R. and Alva paid part of the costs of Emily's funeral and somehow their names were associated with the graves. In 2000 the children of Robert and Anna (Diehm) Hillman joined together to have a stone placed on Edwin's and Emily's grave.

BASIC FACTS
Alice Almira Hillman was born on 23 December 1865 in Epworth, Dubuque Co., Iowa.2 She and Casper Filmore "Cap" Sivits were married on 12 June 1892.2,3 She died on 13 February 1950, at age 84, in North Platte, Lincoln Co., Nebraska.2 She was buried in McCain Cemetery, Stapleton, Logan Co., Nebraska.2 Alice Almira Hillman had reference number 99. Sometime in her mid-20s Alice found work helping the family of Cap and Mary Sivits. It is not known how Alice met the Sivits, but Cap and Mary were living in a sod house on their homestead northeast of North Platte, Nebraska. The couple had three children and Mary needed help caring for them. Mary died shortly after her fourth child was born and Alice stayed on to help Cap take care of his motherless children. Alice and Cap were married in June of 1892. Alice raised Cap's four children and five of her own. (Alice actually had seven children, but two died young.) In the list of children under Alice and Cap I have included the children born to both Alice and Mary.

Evelyn is interested in the genealogy of her family and had compiled an impressive record of family members. I also received information from Darlene (Sivits) Enns who collected information on Lester Sivits' descendants and Jessie (Brown) Sivits who gave me information on the descendants of George Sivits. Diann (Cochran) Dean and Chawn (Siegel) Smith provided information on the descendants of Mary (Sivits) Cochran. Joyce Nettie ( Wright) Thomas provided much of the information on the descendants of William Lincoln Sivits.
