Lisa DeVault Hanson, 53, of Madison, passed away peacefully and comfortably in her own home early on the morning of November 21, after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. Despite her many health struggles, Lisa lived an active life of joy and love, surrounded by her many friends and family. In the mid 1980's, she worked at Intergraph Corp. where she met her husband Jim, and later, shortly after the birth of their son Jimmy, Lisa became a full-time mother and homemaker.
Lisa had a wonderful artistic talent, and especially enjoyed crafting greeting cards and attending stamping classes and seminars. She loved and was devoted to her wonderful rescued dogs, Cody, Tiger and Pepper.
Survivors include husband, James Hanson; son, Jimmy Hanson (Brittany); mother, Jeannette DeVault; brother, Bruce DeVault (Gracie); sister, Sharon Massey (Steve); brother, Michael DeVault (Linda); and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Visitation wil be from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church. The memorial service will immediately follow at the church with Dr. Alan Weatherly and John Ryberg officiating. (www.laughlinservice.com)

Arthur Finkner dies Monday
Arthur E. Finkner, 95, of Fort Morgan died Monday at Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center.
Finkner was born Jan. 14, 1893 in Adams, Neb. He was raised on a farm near Adams and was married there to Emma Diehm Nov. 23, 1916.
Following their marriage, they started farming near Pawnee City, Neb., farming there until moving to a farm near Fort Morgan in 1958. They moved into Fort Morgan on their retirement in 1964. She died July 7, 1984.
Finkner was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church.
He is survived by three sons: Vern and Harold of Fort Morgan and Roland of Pawnee Ciry; two brothers, William of Petersburg, Texas and John of Adams. There is one granddaughter, Karen Carpenter of Fort Morgan.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Joliffe Chapel with Rev. Keith Merriman officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens. Those who wish, may make memorials to the United methodist Church. Arthur and Emma lived much of their lives around Pawnee City, Nebraska. In the early 1920's they purchased a farm near La Junta, Colorado. Vern was born while they were living on this farm. Then they decided to move back to Nebraska. They traded farms with people living in Pawnee City and moved back there. In 1954 Vern and his wife were looking for good land to farm and bought the place where he now lives in Fort Morgan, Colorado. In 1958 Arthur, Emma and son Harold moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado. Circumstances prevented Harold and Vern from continuing with their plans to farm. Vern worked for many years as a mechanic for the Chevrolet Dealer. He was christened on 14 February 1893 in Hopewell Methodist Church, Johnson Co., Nebraska.3

MRS. RAYMOND BIRCH
Laura Olive Hillman, daughter of Edwin and Emily Hillman, was born November 4, 1879, in Gage County, Nebraska, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Blanche Frederick, at North Loup, Thursday. May 3, 1951, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 29 days.
On January 23, 1902, she was united in marriage to Raymond Birch at Beatrice, Nebraska. They set up housekeeping and farming in Gage County until 1909, after which they moved to Loup County and took up a Kinkaid homestead where they lived until 1945, when they moved to Garfield County, east of Burwell.
To this union were born 5 girls and 3 boys, of which 3 died in infancy. Those surviving are: Lester, of Lebanon, Missouri, Mrs. Blanch Frederick of North Loup, Mrs Violet Jaster of David City, Nebr., Mrs Marjorie Klink of St. Maries, Idaho, and Raymond Jr. of Ord.
She became a member of the Latter Day Saints Church (Reorganized Church of Later Day Saints - RLDS) at Adams, Nebraska, in the year 1900.
Left to mourn her passing are: her husband, five children, 21 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, 2 brothers, and a host of friends and relatives.
During the past year she had been in failing health, but remained cheerful at all times until the last.
She was a kind and loving wife and mother, and was loved by all her friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Monday, at 2:00 P.M. at the Christian Church with Elder Shrunk of Lincoln officiating. The music was furnished by: Mrs. Bus Olcott, Miss Eleanor Reincke and Mrs. Bernard Haines at the piano. A solo was sung by Mrs. Shrunk.
The pallbearers were six grandsons: Russell and Clarence Birch, Robert Frederick, Harold Coash, Chester McKimmey, and Frank Porter.
Burial was in the Burwell Cemetery.
Relatives attending from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Lester Birch and family of Labanon, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Jaster and family of David City, Nebr.; Mrs. Lloyd Klink of St. Maries, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Collin and Mrs. Ada Price of Waxahachie, Texas; Mrs Will Widney of Fay, Oklahoma; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Porter of Albin, Wyoming.

1862 -- 1933. John Michael Finkner was born Nov. 15, 1856, Hohefeld, Baden Germany. He was the second son of John Killian Finkner and Kaherine Schlund.
On March 26, 1881, he sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, with Adam Hoffman and his wife Anna, aboard the ship "S. S. Rhynland", bound for America. Adam (Frei) Frey and his wife, Eva, and their seven children were passengers on this same ship. The "Rhynland" docked at Philidelphia on April 9, 1881.
The Frey family - with the exception of a son, Adam, Jr., and the daughter, Mary - came to Nebraska. Adam, Jr., and Mary stayed in New York to work for awhile for a relative before coming out to join their parents.
John Michael Finkner, better known as Michael or Mike, came to Nebraska and was working in the Hopewell neighborhood when his brothers, Killian and Adam, with their families, arrived in March of 1882.
After his marriage of February 2, 1884, to Mary Frey, they established their home on a farm adjoining that of his brother, Adam. The two men often exchanged work and exchanged work with their neighbors when help was needed. All the children of Michael and Mary were born at this home with the exception of Mary Eva who was born at the home of Adam and Rosina Finkner. After the death of Henry Joekel, husband of their daughter, Josephine, in 1916, Michael and Mary moved their family to her farm, where they lived until Michael's death in 1920. (This farm was the homestead of John Joekel, Sr.)
The family attended the Hopewell Methodist Church and the childten went to the Hopewell school. Memories of early times include games of "Shinny" played during recess at school, the annual Hopewell Sunday School picnic down in the timber, and the delicious taste of home grown apples - gathered by the pocketfulls from the tree on the way to the field in summer, or brought up. crisp and cold, from the cellar in winter.
After the death of Michael, Mary moved to Adams with her son, John, until he completed High School when they returned to the original farm home. Mary lived here until her death in 1933. John and his wife, Viola, continued to live here for a number of years.
The children of Michael and Mary all chose farming as their occupation and several moved to Colorado, Kansas, and to Texas to make their homes. The occupations and professions of the descendents of Michaeel and Mary include school teachers, a doctor, a minister, as Air Force captain, sales personnel, secretaries, dry cleaners, bookkeepers, mechanics, farmers, cattle feeders, grain elevator operators, irrigation equipment personnel, a professional cake decorator, and many others.
