OBITUARY
DIED, near Bristol, Tenn on the 22nd Inst. Mrs. Julia G., wife of William B. DeVault after an illness of a few days.
Mrs. D., was a member of the Presbyterian church in Springfield, Bath Co., Ky., having come amongst us less than a year ago, a young bride full of hope and promise. Quickly, unexpectedly, the summons came, but it found her prepared. Looked at from the standpoint of sense, there is something sad in the dispensation of Providence that intercepts a pathway so soon, after the paths of two have met, sundering the ties so recently formed, and by one fell stroke cutting across the laid plans for a life time. What a fit emblem is Jonah's gourd of earthly hopes and prospects. But there is another and higher standpoint, and it is the true one from which to look at what is dark, and bright of Earth. From that we may see the darkness driven away by eternal sunshine and the brightness merged into ineffable glory. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness and do immediately pass into glory; and their bodies still being united to Christ do rest in their graves till the resurrection. This is in accord with the teachings of the Scriptures concerning the condition of the pious death. The subject of this notice from Jordan's middle waters seemed for a while to converse with two worlds. Now, she would talk with friends on this side, now, on that. Thus she lingered a little while speaking backwards of victory and of cheer till a breath of air floated her to the other shore. What the scene over there ?? the faith ......... the soul as it emerges is greated with music from more than a million harps and then clasped by kindred ones who ever wait along that other bank, was carried up the shining way that leads hard by the Throne of God. We buried her body with that of her sweet little babe nestled among her bosom in the church yard of Leesburg and placed a wreath on the grave confident that both will have part in the first resurrection.
