BASIC FACTS

Frederick Russell "Russ or Russell" DeVault was born on 29 October 1941 in Washington Co., Virginia.4 He was born on 29 October 1941 in Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.2 He and Jane Cornett Warrick were married on 24 March 1962 in Sparta, Alleghany Co., North Carolina.5 He died on 11 November 2016, at age 75.6
Frederick Russell "Russ or Russell" DeVault had reference number 854. He was a Times-News Sunday Editor (1963); reporter for the Atlanta Journal & Constitution.3,7 He resided in Atlanta, Georgia; Austell, Cobb Co., Georgia (1994.)3,8 Don't Bet The Farm On Brooks' Retirement, November 14, 2000, By Russ DeVault, Cox News Service.

I can't remember the exact date, but it was not long after his first major tour -- he was playing venues such as the Omni instead of clubs like the Buckboard -- that Garth Brooks mentioned retiring. One more album and one more tour, maybe, and he'd go out on top. I laughed and let it pass.
Now, upwards of 10 years later, after multimillions of album sales and thousands of shows, Brooks, 38, is still on top and saying it again. Only this time, just a few days ago, it was at a formal news conference, then again at a celebratory party for about 2,500 in Nashville's arena, instead of to an audience of one. Maybe they believed him; I don't.
Here's why: Brooks, currently separated from wife Sandy, the mother of his three daughters, revels in the spotlight. He relishes being the Oklahoma cat who ate up traditional country music and grinned his way to sales of more than 100 million albums. Sure, he's king today, but if he abdicates after one more album, which Brooks says is "owed the people," he loses what he loves.
No more wildly cheering crowds. No more adoring media. No more music-business clout, which Brooks has and has shamelessly used to further his own agenda (he studied marketing at Oklahoma State). But there have been glitches as well as triumphs.
Take his party, held for people with a vested interest in his career, plus family, friends and a few media types. It was black tie and limousines. Searchlights bathed the night sky. The route to the arena floor -- which had been transformed into a dimly lit ballroom laden with premium liquors, tenderloins and fat chocolate cakes -- was lined with pictures, posters and other Garthobilia.
Extravagant? Yes. Excessive? Perhaps, but Brooks does everything in a big way. Brooks changed the face of country music, opening the doors of a once conservative establishment to such acts as saucy Faith Hill, the pop-leaning Dixie Chicks, raffish Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and others. Before Garth, there was traditional and New Traditional -- and a lot was flat-out boring. Brooks added some ingredients and spiced it up according to his vision.
"When you look at artists who understand their moment in time and place in culture, some understand it from an artistic viewpoint and some from a marketing perspective, but Garth's real gift is understanding both perspectives," says Michael Greene, chief executive of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. "He knew how to market who he was and what he was doing and follow his artistic path. He has allowed people to help, but has never taken his hands off the wheel."
As for retirement, Greene just laughs. "I don't buy that. He is bursting with talent, and he'll explode if he doesn't perform. Garth is ordained, and it will be impossible for him to leave the ministry of music -- I promise you that."
Ben Farrell of Nashville-based Varnell Enterprises, a major promoter of country music, considers Brooks a crossover draw as well as a monster seller of tickets. "He brought tremendous numbers of people into record stores, he helped country radio, he brought a lot of people from the contemporary world into country and created a lot of excitement for the media," Farrell says. "The only one I've seen who could touch him was Elvis, and Elvis was in a much slower business world. Frankly, I don't know who can pick up the slack. Maybe we have someone on the horizon that we just can't see."
If Brooks is determined to go over the horizon and sticks to retirement, there's nothing to be done. Capitol/EMI has no real contractual hold on Brooks, who is the equivalent of a free agent sports superstar who can dictate his terms.
Remember in 1997 when Brooks decided that Capitol Nashville, then directed by Scott Hendricks, didn't do a good job of promoting his albums? Taking advantage of a clause in his contract, he withheld his album "Sevens." EMI caved in to Brooks' wishes, Hendricks was reassigned, and Pat Quigley -- a Brooks confidant and his choice for the job -- took over the label. That's real star power. At the same time, Brooks is a master at winning over individuals, whether spending hour after hour signing autographs at Nashville's annual Fan Fair or shaking the hands of partygoers until almost everyone in the Nashville arena had been greeted personally. Trust me -- to spend even a few seconds inside Brooks' space is to be mesmerized.
But there is no real bottom line for Brooks' retirement. "It's not going to be real crystal clear," he told The Nashville Tennessean, adding that staging six or seven concerts next year for television is a possibility. He said nothing at his party more meaningful than that Sandy had played a great role in his success, that a divorce might or might not happen and that he owes a lot of thanks to a lot of people.
So, having spoken of retirement during that long-ago interview and again in December 1994 and on several occasions since, why should we think this quasi-retirement will stick? After his last tour played to 5.3 million fans and he finally reached his long-held goal of selling 100 million albums, I'm not believing Brooks has run out of ambition and is content to be a family man dabbling in music -- and neither should you. For Brooks, a man driven by the need to succeed, there's never enough. Retirement may seem like a good idea, but wait until he feels the chill of lost glory and power. He will be back.

MEMORIAL - TRUEx SPORTS REPORT by Alan Truex, December 21, 2016

DeVault knew cars, guitars, sports, art, wine, everything
Russ DeVault had a greater range of knowledge than anyone I’ve known. Who else could speak in detail about hockey, automobile engines, guitar-playing, oyster harvesting, German wine, Impressionism, biorhythms, Thomas Mann and Charlemagne’s sword?
Ask him about any number of other subjects, he could speak knowingly about most of them.
Which to some extent explains why at the erstwhile Atlanta Journal sports department it was acknowledged that he was the best of us at interviewing. He knew enough about everything to relate to everyone. His eclectic newspaper beats included golf, music and automobiles. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for his investigation of Virginia strip-mining.
As modest as he was, I never knew about his Pulitzer at the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel until he died recently after battling lung cancer and lung infections for a decade and a half. He was 75 when he passed in Springfield, Mass., where he was living for three years with his daughter, Leigh Houle, and her husband Eric.
She knew how her father acquired so much knowledge even though his scholastic training was limited, being born in Leesburg, Tenn., and degreed at Eastern Tennessee State. “My dad read all the time,” she said. “He was not much for sleeping.”
Sometimes when she and her brother Trip (Frederick Russell DeVault III, now of Chicopee, Mass.) misbehaved as children, they were dispatched to their rooms. Their dad would require them to spend the penalty time memorizing a poem. “He wanted us to experience as much from life as we could,” she said, adding that he took her on a trip to Europe when she was in fourth grade.
Unlike myself and most other newspaper reporters, Russ balanced hard work with family life. Not so much balanced them but merged them.
“My friends were amazingly jealous, me being with my dad while he interviewed Eric Clapton,” Leigh said. “But I didn’t appreciate it that much at the time. He dragged me to concerts with him, and I’d have to wait really late until he was finished doing his interviews.”
Because he was such a skilled reporter, he tended to get lengthy interviews. But a majority of his work he did at home. “I had long waits to use the telephone, day and night,” Leigh said, recalling the pre-cellphone era.
At the Journal sports department, much was said about Russ being absent from the office. “Anybody seen DeVault in the past two weeks?”
I’d answer, “Yesterday I played tennis with him near his house. After that he did his phone interviews.”
By living in what was then the village of Austell, Ga., Russ was more than an hour’s drive from downtown Atlanta. So he could never be summoned to cover a suddenly emerging story involving Braves or Hawks or Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
The truth is that as a journalist he was more productive at home than anywhere else. He had a deep, reassuring voice that was more of an asset in telephone interviewing than face to face.
One time when I was visiting him, Russ was in the bathroom, the phone rang and I answered. It was an even deeper voice than DeVault’s, that of country music’s John Anderson. He pleasantly chatted with me for a minute until Russ returned, and I wondered if the call would have been lost if it had gone to the office, where we didn’t even have a secretary.
Anderson was typical of DeVault’s subjects in that they made every effort to be interviewed by him. They knew he would treat them fairly.
Leigh Houle recalled dining with her father in Winston-Salem, “and Richard Petty – when he was NASCAR’s biggest star – came by our table to say hi.”
DeVault had lengthy one-on-ones with some of the most famous of celebrities — Bjorn Borg, Renee Richards, Ted Turner, Mick Jagger, et al. Leigh correctly cited a key to his success: “He had a way of getting people to talk about themselves; he was so non-threatening.”
Indeed, Russ was rail-thin, soft-spoken, unassuming. But he was a tenacious reporter in his own reserved way. He was punched by a NASCAR driver who objected to his objective coverage.
When Russ was the Journal’s golf writer, he was one of the few scribes who walked the course. His cohorts sat in the press tent, consuming roast beef sandwiches and icy beer and waiting for the golfers to drop in and summarize their performances.
After Gary Player finished his round at the Masters at Augusta, Ga., he was delivering the hole-by-hole report, when Russ interrupted.
“Gary, what caused you to fall into the water at Number Five?”
As laughter erupted in the press room, Player blushed and sputtered. He had not wanted to mention the pratfall, but Russ would not let him get away with it.
DeVault had a quick, searing wit that he showed in his stories and elsewhere.
Upon returning from a vacation I was telling my Journal pals about venturing too close to a herd of bison grazing at Custer National Park. A bull did not care to pose for my camera. In fact, he kicked up dust with his front hooves, and then he charged toward me.
Some other tourists, standing at a safe distance, were screaming, “Run faster, FASTER!”
Of course they did not need to tell me that.
I was running as fast as my short white legs could carry me.
As I finished my tale of the thundering bull drawing closer, to what sounded like 20 feet, and then stopping, giving up the chase, Russ grabbed a piece of paper we used for writing headlines.
Without missing a beat, he wrote with his pen: Hockey writer trampled by buffalo

Response to Alan's article by Gita Smith
In all the years I was close with Russ, he never mentioned the strip-mining series or his Pulitzer. How like him to spring a posthumous surprise! He also was a true romantic. One evening he heard me mumbling something about the rich life of Europeans who ate figs with Ruby Port. A few nights later, he appeared with a tray of – yes – figs and a small decanter of Ruby Port with a white napkin across his arm, like a waiter in a french restaurant. Another time I accompanied Russ while he was interviewing Greg Allman. The musician went into his hotel room closet and shut the door. We waited for an hour, hoping whatever it was in Greg’s system would wear off. Russ finally conducted his interview through the closet door.
I have innumerable memories like these, so I’ll end by saying I hope Russ is somewhere talking cars with Carroll Shelby and chilling with Leonard Cohen.

Response to Alan's article by Tom Crosby
I attended King College in Bristol, Tenn. with Russ and we both played soccer at a time when all but two of us had never played before. (Our two veterans were celebrated soccer players fleeing troubled times in Hungary.) Russ had a bad neck so didn’t aggressively go after head shots but played anyway although a doctor had told him he might permanently injure himself heading a ball. We became life-long friends and before his lung cancer diagnosis would search area stores for small cigars once he ran out. He could drink with the best of them. Alan’s reminisce of his reporting and writing expertise is spot on. Russ got me a job at the Virginia-Tennesseean and I went to interviews with him and he once assigned me a story on Porter Wagonner, whom I interviewed with Dolly Parton looking on. My lede was anemic and Russ brightened it with a reference to the NBC Peacock. We drank together, smoked together, talked about life, sports and vampires. He loved stories about them. I miss him and wish I had called more often after he got sick. The walls of his house in Austel were lined with music writing awards and he was the person who got me doing car reviews 20 years ago when I was working for AAA Carolinas and which I still do. Russ loved cars and Formula One racing. I miss him and share the loss with everyone who got to know him. He was special. Godspeed, Russ, you were a special breed.

VISTA -- Patricia Marie Christopherson (Gualco) passed away Thursday, August 30, 2012 at her daughter's home in Chino Hills, Calif. She was born to Peter and Gladys Gualco in Baldwin Park, Calif., on the 23rd of March, 1932. Patricia resided in Vista, Calif., for the last two decades of her life. She lost her husband, Lyle, of 63 years on Thursday, August 16, 2012. The two were madly in love with one another and still danced in the kitchen singing "Shall We Dance" only weeks before Lyle's death.

A devout Catholic who gave of her time to help those in need, Patricia served her church, Saint Thomas More, for years. She seemed to float weightlessly through this life, while lightening the burden of those whom she ministered, including women in prison, children in homeless shelters, as well as her family.

Throughout her life, Patricia taught others to relax, take deep breaths and protect their health. Frequently exercising her body and mind, she enjoyed yoga, long walks on the beach and solving crossword puzzles. She never just passed the time, Patricia completely absorbed herself with the activity she chose to do. Just as she passionately devoted herself to volunteerism, she energetically enjoyed playing the card games poker, pinochle and 3-13.

Patricia is survived by one son, David; three daughters, Cathy, Theresa and Linda; one sister, Marguerite; several grandchildren and great- grandsons, as well as many extended family members and friends. Patricia's charitable spirit should forever remind us that in giving of ourselves, we give ourselves the greatest gift.

Services for both Patricia and Lyle Christopherson will be held at 11am on Friday, September 21st, at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 14085 Peyton Drive, Chino Hills, CA 91709.
