World War II, U.S. Army, enlisted 4 Jun 1942 in Cincinnati as a private. (Says he was divorced with dependents.)⁶ There is little evidence to even show that Jess Massengill was ever married to a William Van Hise. The marriage is shown in a genealogy prepared by John Longworth White. Also, in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida City Directory for 1947 - 1947, Jess is shown using the Van Hise surname. My belief that Jess married this particular Van Hise comes from the fact that in the 1930s and 1940s, this was the only William Van Hise living in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. The above referenced genealogy says that Jess married William Van Hise on 2 Feb 1942. Jess's dad, Michael Dallas Massengill, Sr. died the following month. His obituary says that Jess was living in Cincinnati at the time. This puts Jess and this William Van Hise very close to each other at the time of the marriage. This may have been a short-lived marriage. On 4 Jun 1942, William enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was shown as single in the 1940 Census but, in the enlistment record, he says he is divorced with children.
