Walter Quinton Gresham of Lanesville, Indiana studied law under Judge William A. Porter in Corydon, Indiana. He was unusually intelligent. He resided with the Porter family from 1852 to 1854 while he studied law. He was familiarly referred to by the Porter family as "Wat". He was a sweetheart of Judge Porter's daughter, Ann Dunlap. Ann died very young and in later years Mr. Gresham married Matilda McGrain, daughter of Thomas McGrain, Sr. of Corydon, Indiana.
Mr. Gresham enlisted as a private during the Civil War and rose to the rank of General. He filled with distinction many offices of public trust in the United States. In 1869 he was appointed U.S. District Judge for the District of Indiana and in 1882 he was appointed Postmaster General by President Chester A. Arthur. Two years later he was appointed Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, and later on he became U.S. Circuit Judge for the Seventh District. In 1893 he became U.S. Secretary of State under President Grover Cleveland, which position he filled until his death in 1895.
