BASIC FACTS
Mary Ann Bridwell was born in April 1827 in Tennessee.3,6 She and Michael Kitzmiller DeVault were married about 1847.6 She died on 4 November 1911, at age 84, in Pittsfield, Pike Co., Illinois.11,7 She was buried in Pittsfield West Cemetery, Pittsfield, Pike Co., Illinois.12 Mary Ann Bridwell had reference number 827. She resided in of Tennessee.13 She was enumerated on the census in Macoupin County, Illinois (1860); Pike County, Illinois (1880, 1900, 1910.) It is my guess that Mary's parents were Sanford and Mary Jane (Tittsworth) Bridwell. This guess is based on the ages of Sanford and Mary Bridwell and the location (Sullivan County, Tennessee) where they lived. That being true, Mary Ann (Bridwell) DeVault was the aunt of Emaline T. (Bachman) Kitzmiller through the Bridwell line.

BASIC FACTS
Jacob Allen Leighton was born on 25 August 1858 in Warsau P.O., Wayne Co., Iowa.1 He and Mary Catherine Clark were married on 9 November 1890 in Florence, Fremont Co., Colorado. He died on 24 September 1936, at age 78, in Los Angeles, California. He was buried after 24 September 1936 in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles Co., California. Jacob Allen Leighton was also known as Charles Albert. He had reference number 845. He was an Oil Field Worker in Coalinga. He was enumerated on the census in Wayne County, Iowa (1860); Los Angeles County, California (1930.) Letter from Ruby (Leighton) Cooper to Pat Betton says that Charles was originally named Jacob Allen but he didn't like the name and went by his middle name, Al. When he was about 21 he bought a team of horses. The man whom he bought them from made the bill of sale out to C. A. Leighton. From then on he was C. A. or Charles Albert Leighton. The family always called him Al.
Also in the above letter Ruby says that her grandmother, Nancy (Garriott) Leighton and family were wonderful people and helped take care of the girls while they were little.
Also in the above letter Ruby says that her father was the first sheriff in Florence, Colorado. He was also a farmer and rig builder for the first oil company in Colorado. Later he worked in the oil fields of Coalinga, California. He was a carpenter while the girls were growing up.
Also in the above letter Ruby says that before her mother, Mary (Clark) Leighton, died she told Charles to raise their daughters in the Catholic faith. Four years later, in 1906, Charles moved to Los Angeles, CA to live with his mother-in-law, Amanda Jane Gray. The girls were a bit too much for grandma, so she put the girls in Sacred Heart Convent, a Catholic boarding school. The girls stayed at the school until they were old enough to keep house for their father. He never married again but stayed with the girls until they were married.
Florence, Colorado newspaper article (written abt. 1961) says that Al (Jacob) Leighton was the first marshall of Florence and that his uncle, Matt McCandless was responsible for naming Florence, in honor of his daughter. Married by William F. Genard, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses: William J Green and Lizzie Wistfal.
