William Leighton enlisted in the 34th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry Volunteers on August 15, 1862 at Corydon, Wayne Co., Iowa. The enlistment was to be for a period of 3 years. He was the 5th Sergeant in Captain McClannahan's Co. F. He was discharged on March 26, 1863 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri for medical reasons. He was diagnosed with granular degeneration of the liver and obstinate constipation.
Pension Claim of Nancy E. widow of William E. Leighton
There are two documents: The first filled out by Arthur A. Eddy, M.D., the attending physician when William died. The primary cause of death was sclerosis of the liver. He also had some heart trouble. The second document was filled out in Salem, Richardson Co., Nebraska by T. L. Martin, M.D. (Emily Leighton's autobiography explains that the family traveled to Nebraska specifically to have Dr. Martin assist with her mother's pension claim.) Dr. Martin had been William's doctor from 1865 until 1871. During this time, he treated him and prescribed medication to alleviate constipation. Dr. Martin saw William again in September of 1889. At this time he again treated him for constipation and observed heart trouble. Letter from Bea (Eva Beatrice) Littlejohn to Ruby (Leighton) Cooper says that the 1860 census for Warsaw Post Office, Wayne Co., Iowa contains an entry for William Leighton, Nancy Ellen Leighton and one year old J. A. Leighton. Enlisted in Union Army, Corydon, Wayne Co., Iowa.6

George W. Hillman1
M, #1038, b. 1837, d. 6 April 1862
Parents
BASIC FACTS
George W. Hillman was born in 1837 in Pennsylvania.1 He died on 6 April 1862, at age ~25, in Shiloh, Hardin Co., Tennessee.2 George W. Hillman had reference number 1039. Not much is know about George Hillman. He is counted in the 1840 Census for Bradford County, Pennsylvania and is listed by name in the 1850 Census for Bradford County, Pennsylvania and the 1860 Census for Johnson County, Nebraska. After that he is no longer seen in census or land records.
A sworn statement made in 1929 by Thaddeus Hillman says: "he had three brothers in the Civil War, one of whom was shot in the head and killed." We know that brother John Jr. was also in the Civil War and returned safely. It is assumed that the other two brothers were George and Pembroke. So far no record of Pembroke's service in the war has been found. However, he too is never heard from after the 1860 census. It is quite possible that Pembroke was using his middle name which has not been recorded.
On July 29, 1890, John Hillman, Sr. (father of George W. Hillman) filed a Civil War Pension Request. The application, number 468858, was filed from Nebraska and lists the name of the soldier as George W. Hillman and lists his service organization as "I. 18 Wis. Inf."
The "Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion" lists a George W. Hillman who enlisted as a Private on February 25, 1862, in I Co. 18th Inf. Reg. WI. It says he was killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. Wisconsin's 18th Regiment Infantry was organized at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and mustered in March 15, 1862. Left Wisconsin for St. Louis, Missouri, March 30; thence moved to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee., March 31-April 5. On April 6-7, 1862, the company fought in the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. George was killed on the first day.
In 2006, Judy and I visited the Shiloh Battlefield National Historic Site. We learned that most of those killed were burried in mass graves and there is no record of where George might be buried. Civil War, Union Army, enlisted in I Co., 18th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers; Enlistment Rank: Private; Killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862.2

Thaddeus Cabiscus Sewarsaw Hillman1,2,3
M, #1039, b. 8 March 1841, d. 3 August 1922
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Thaddeus Cabiscus Sewarsaw Hillman was born on 8 March 1841 in Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.4 He and Elizabeth A. R. Stafford were married on 28 August 1867 in Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska by Rev. L. F. Britt.5,6,4 He died on 3 August 1922, at age 81, in Fort Dick, Del Norte Co., California.4 He was buried on 5 August 1922 in Smith River Cemetery, Smith River, Del Norte County, California, Section 2, Row 8, Grave 19.7 Thaddeus Cabiscus Sewarsaw Hillman had reference number 1040. He was a Farmer.7 Thaddeus Hillman entered the Union Army on November 1, 1862, at Nebraska City, Nebraska. He was sent to Omaha, Nebraska, where he was mustered into Company F, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry. On the Regimental Descriptive Book he is described as Age: 21; Height: 5 feet, 8 inches; Complexion: fair; Hair: brown; Born: Bradford Co., PA; Occupation: laborer. He was mustered out on December 10, 1863.
On June 30, 1898 he filed a pension application (No. 865,171). It lists the name of his wife, their marriage date and place, and her death date and place. It also lists the names and birth dates of his children.
On March 30, 1907, Thaddeus filed a Declaration for Pension. In it he states that he now holds Pension Certificate No. 1051,861. Here he lists his residences since being discharged as follows:
"in Neb for about 15 yrs, then to California some 6 yrs, then to Oregon
where I have lived some twenty yrs, then to Cal. for short time, then
to Ore. where I have since lived"
He also states that his present address is Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon.
Apparently there was some question as to his birth year. In an affidavit filed on April 15, 1913, he says that the year of his birth must be 1842 and not 1841 as previously reported.
There is another affidavit filed by Thaddeus that goes into more detail regarding the mixup of his birth year. In this document he again swears that he must have been born in 1842 and not 1841. The affidavit is not dated.
In a questionnaire filled out for the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions on June 22, 1915, he answers many of the same questions answered in the initial application. Ironically, he lists his birthdate as "8th Mar. 1841."

It is her desire to secure a re-opening & a further and more careful consideration of her claim for widow's pension under the general law. She therefore respectfully asks & requests for a further & more careful consideration of both of said claims & that Fitzgerald & Delp of Indianapolis, Indiana may be recognized as her true and lawful attorneys. In the further & final prosecution of said claims, and upon allowance of the same they be paid their fee. She respectfully asks & requests for prompt & early action on said claims.

MARY CLARENCE
1861 - 1933 1853 - 1936. Reported by Keith Hillman, grandson of Clarence and Mary (Kritner) Hillman (from The Atkins Chronicles by Jane Cuccio)
Mary got restless after her sons left home, so she too left home in about 1900 and went to Colorado and cooked for the miners at Cripple Creek. Clarence got a divorce, which was necessary so that he could sell his farm of about 80 acres, which he did, and went to western Kansas and bought several more.
"Mary came back from Colorado about 1917 and stayed with us for
awhile; knitted each of us a pair of gloves. I remember some gold
nuggets she brought back, but like kids we lost them. She wanted to go
to Kansas and see the other boys, so went to Concordia where Bert
was. They bought her a house but she wasn't happy so they put her in
a home."
When Clarence sold his farm and bought land in western Kansas, he told his grandson, Keith, that he wanted a farm there for each of his boys. Three of them did settle in Kansas: Bert at Concordia, Les and his wife, Bessie, at Esbon and Alva and his wife, Cora, at Jewell. Harry and his wife Cora (Atkins) Hillman did not go to Kansas.

HARRY HILLMAN DIES
SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE
The community was shocked and saddened Thursday afternoon to learn of the unexpected passing of Harry Hillman. He had been about as usual that day and had just returned home from walking to town when he complained of a severe pain in his chest and before the doctor could be summoned he passed away.
HARRY AUBRA HILLMAN
Harry Aubra Hillman, son of Clarence and Mary Kritner Hillman, was born December 5, 1880, near Adams, Nebraska and passed away June 15, 1961. He had lived his entire life in this community.
He was married on February 24, 1904, to Cora Elizabeth Atkins, who survives.
He united with the Christian Church as a young boy and later joined the Grandview Baptist Church.
Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, Keith of Kansas City, Kans., Kenneth of Mt. Pleasant, Ia.; three daughters, Mrs. Clair (Orpha) Palmer of Corpus Christi, Tex., Mrs. Charles (Erma) Waggoner of Rockport, Tex., and Mrs. Charles (Naomi) Hibbert, Mt. Pleasant, Ia., 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Three brothers Alva of Jewell, Kans., Burdette of Concordia, Kans., and Les W. of Esbon, Kans.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Adams Sunday afternoon, June 18 at 2:30. The Rev. Fred Loder officiated. A quartet composed of Donald McPherson, Paul Fischer, Rev. Loder and Myron Oehlerking sang accompanied by Mrs. Earl Krause at the organ. Pall bearers were: Henry Gramann, Jr., Clarence Gottula, Les VanGreuningen, John Finkner, Wm. Hintz and Kenneth Martin. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. From Sharon (Hillman) Duncan
In 1904 Harry's father sold the family farm and moved to Kansas with three of his sons. Harry and Cora leased farming land in the Grandview District where all their children were born and raised. In 1925, due to the Drought and Depression, Harry and Cora moved to Adams where he did carpenter work and painted houses to make a living. Whend Cora's mother, Hattie Atkins, passed away, Cora took cae f her father, Litt Atkins, until his death. The Atkins home was deeded to her and there she and Harry lived during their last years.
From The Atkins Chronicles by Jane Cuccio.
Harry was a quiet and steady man; Cora was short, energetic and emotionally involved with life. Intensely domestic, she was an excellent dressmaker and cook. Once, in her later years, she said her secret desire had always been "to cook in a cafe." Her children were her jewels: people were the events of her life. She would converse, summer evenings on the lawn with fireflies, and laugh until the tears came -- and tears would spill over at summer's end at the time of parting. An unknown parodist provided Cora with a quotation that fit her:
"O give me a bed with a roof overhead,
And a window that looks to the sky;
A door that will latch and a moment to catch,
The hand of a friend passing by."
After her mother died, Cora and Harry moved into her father's house from their own across the back lane in Adams. There was a dugout in the lawn which children romantically called the cyclone cellar, but which Cora called her cave. Here she kept her canned goods. At the bleak moment of parting she would disappear into the cave and come up with a jar of gooseberries for the traveler. After she died, the new owner filled in the cave and built a garage over it.
