(Side) (Side.) As a small boy Conrad came to the United States with his parents. They settled in the Hopewell, Missouri neighborhood. Conrad served for four years in the United States army during the Civil War. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. When he returned home from his military service he married Justine and they went immediately in 1865 to a homestead farm southwest of Sterling, Nebraska. They resided here as long as they lived. Conrad was very active in the Hopewell, Nebraska community. He was a charter member of the German Methodist church; he was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years and he served as a trustee of the church. He also helped to establish a public school in the neighborhood. To the union of Justine and Conrad eight children were born, all on the home farm near Sterling, Nebraska.
