BASIC FACTS
William Francis Pullen was born about 1894 in Nebraska.4 He was born on 25 June 1896 in Bayard, Morrill Co., Nebraska.1,2,3 He was born on 25 June 1896 in Sparta, Alleghany Co., North Carolina.2 He and Pauline Henrietta Warrick were married on 6 December 1915 in Bridgeport, Morrill Co., Nebraska.2,4 He died on 23 February 1970, at age 73, in Bayard, Morrill Co., Nebraska.1,3 He was buried in Bayard Cemetery, Bayard, Morrill Co., Nebraska.3 William Francis Pullen had reference number 1745. William Pullen lived in and around Bayard, Nebraska all his life. Here he took for his bride a young lady from Colorado, Pauline Warrick. They were married December 6, 1915, and lived their entire married life in the same home. Francis died there at the age of 73 on February 23, 1970. Pauline moved to Bayard, near the home of her daughter, Bonnie, and passed away on December 15, 1977. The couple raised seven children on the farm.
The following was written by Bonnie (Pullen) Eigbrett, and included in the 1988 Pullen Family Reunion papers:
William Francis Pullen
The William Francis Pullen family lived on the same farm until dad passed away in '72. All seven children (one died at birth) were born and raised on the same farm. Nine people living in a four room house, two small bedrooms, wasn't easy, but we didn't seem to mind. We all worked hard, but had plenty to eat and clothes on our backs. I remember referring to "the dress" that we wore to school; everyone else was in the same fix.
Vern was the oldest; we had lots of fights, but let anyone else pick on us, and we'd stick together. Vern, Dot and a neighbor used to ride to town on horse-back and go to a movie. On the way home, the guys would try to leave Dot in the dark, but she rode "Old Sam" and they couldn't out run her. I remember tagging along on several of Vern's dates. Clarice, how could you stand me?
Dot was left in charge of us when the folks were gone. They could depend on her to do a good job. If we didn't mind, she could whip us all.
We remember going to town on Saturday night, in the back of the truck, with the eggs and cream cans. Money from those bought the groceries. One night a cream can tipped and spilled all over us. (We stayed in the truck that night while the folks shopped.) We'd alway tell dad to let us out on a side street, but, once in a while, he'd "chug" right down main just to let us know who was boss.
Remember heating the curling iron in the lamp chimney, and all of us girls taking turns curling and scorching our hair?
In the summer, after working in the fields, our daily bath was a swim at "The Drops." Saturday night the big tub would be placed in the middle of the kitchen floor, and we all had baths. What a blessing when we got water and electricity in the house.
We worked our own beets, and I can still feel those sore knees; even though we fixed heavy pads on our overalls. We'd work hard to finish thinning and blocking by the 4th of July so we could celebrate.
For Memorial Day we'd take tubs and go to the hills and pick wild flowers (Buffalo Peas) to decorate the graves. There was usually a picnic, and the family got together for the day. We always had lots of chores, and usually milked 15 to 20 cows. None of us drank milk; saw too many cows put their foot in the bucket. We separated the milk and sold the cream. We had lots of good homemade ice-cream.
We did lots of fun and crazy things. I was riding on Dots shoulders looking up into the trees, and a bird daubed in my eye. I thought that was what caused my cataract, but wasn't so; they ran in the family.
Pat got hooked on a nail climbing the ladder to the hay-mow, and we had to lift her off of it. That wasn't funny; it hurt. Betty, squeezing a mouse to a pulp, that had run up her pant leg while raking hay. We'd stir up hornets nests, and that caused a lot of run-aways with the teams.
One time a fellow came to pick up Diz for a date, and dad met the kid at the door with a shotgun. (He was cleaning it.) I can't remember if that date ever came back or not. Dot always said, when it came to dating, she broke the ice for the younger ones. Dad was very strict!
Bill was the youngest; so can't remember much of what he did. I know we all spoiled him rotten. Most of us were away from home by then.
Can't forget the "Banty Rooster"; that thing would take us everytime we started to, or came from, the barn. He should have been killed before he was hatched. Funny, I can't remember what happened to him.
Winter fun consisted of ice-skating on Bryer Lake; Vern pulling us on the sled, behind the horse, and lots of snowball fights.
All seven kids ended up married and raising families. Their kids marrying and having kids, etc... I'm looking forward to this reunion and meeting the whole "CLAN".
