Ernest Hoffman1
M, #2966, b. 4 April 1911, d. 8 May 1989
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Ernest Hoffman was born on 3 April 1911.2 He was born on 4 April 1911 in Sutz Letrigen, Switzerland.1 He and Lillian Idell Hillman were married on 29 June 1936 in Eureka, Humboldt Co., California.1,3 He died on 8 May 1989, at age 78, in Eureka, Humboldt Co., California.1,4 He was buried in Sunset Memorial Park, Eureka, Humboldt Co., California.1 Ernest Hoffman had reference number 2990. He was educated Chemistry.5 He was a Contractor.1 His Social Security Number was 547-19-1806.2 Ernest Hoffman (Ernst Hofmann) went to a French College and studied chemistry of 1-1/2 years. While waiting to become of age to go to America, he worked on freighters, traveling around Cape Horn to Australia and back for approximately one year. His last return trip met with a castastrophe. While on the approach to the harbor, the freighter capsized and crew members jumped ship. Some of the crew were able to swim to shore while others drowned.
Sponsored by his uncle, John Hoffman, Ernest entered America via Ellis Island in September, 1929. He worked his way across the United States, using his butchering skills learned from his father Reinhardt Hofmann. Once in California, he located his Uncle John in Eureka and stayed close to the uncle and the Swiss community in Humboldt County. After a year, at his uncle's insistence, Ernest prepared for and took the citizenship test to become a U. S. citizen, well within the 5-year limit.
Under President Roosevelt, the Civilian Conversation Corps (CCC) was established. The Corps put people back to work with improvement projects in communities across America. Most of the money earned by these men was sent to their families by the government. Many men were sent to other states to work, away from their families. Ernest signed up and was sent to Orleans, California. He was a cook at the CCC Camp and befriended by Grant Hillman, Sr., owner of the Hillman Ranch. This is where Ernest and Lillian Hillman met. Ernest would listen attentively to Grant Sr.'s stories and help, now and then, around the Ranch.
Lillian Idell Hillman was born to Mattie and Grant Hillman, Sr. on June 4, 1911, at the Hillman Ranch. The Ranch was located near Orleans, Humbolt County, California. As a child, she was known for rocking her brothers and sisters so her mother could carry on the daily chores. After graduating from the local school in Orleans, she was sent to the Sherman Institute for Indians in Riverside County, California. There she learned to sew and bake. Being a teenager of small stature, about 4' 11", and of slender build, the school matron would send Lillian to the bakery until she was fattened up, then return her to regular duties. When Lillian lost weight, she was again sent to the bakery. The school was built by the male students and the female students made all the clothing and linens as well as cooking. All the students joined in the laundering duties, gardening and harvesting. Lillian did not graduate, but finished the eleventh grade. Each summer she returned home to help on the Ranch.
In 1936 Lillian ran off with Ernest and they were married in a civil ceremony presided by St. Clair Adams, Justice of the Peace at the courthouse in Eureka. No family members were in attendance. Ernest and Lillian moved into a furnished room close to the Eureka Inn, where Ernest was working as a salad preparer and kitchen helper. He would occasionally take home food from the Inn. Within a few years, Darlene and Arthur were born. These were very hard times. The country was just coming out of the depression. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, Ernest joined a construction crew and worked in Hawaii for a couple of years. In the years that followed, three more children were born: John, Helen and Grace.
