Mattie Lydia TenEyke1
F, #6857, b. 22 September 1888, d. 25 February 1959
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Mattie Lydia TenEyke was born on 22 September 1888 in the Ishi Pishi Indian Village, Somes Bar, Siskiyou Co., California.2 She and Grant Ulysses Hillman were married on 28 July 1915 in Somes Bar, Siskiyou Co., California.1 She died on 25 February 1959, at age 70, in Eureka, Humboldt Co., California.2 She was buried on 28 February 1959 in Sunset Memorial Park, Eureka, Humboldt Co., California.2,3 Mattie Lydia TenEyke had reference number 7121. She was educated in Indian Industrial School, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Graduated 3/31/1910.1 Her Social Security Number was 561-22-9033.4 On Feburary 24, 1959, Mattie was struck by a car while crossing the street. Grant Ulyssis Hillman, Sr. was born in Gage County, Nebraska, to Thaddeus and Elizabeth Hillman. In the late 1870's Thaddeus and Elizabeth moved their family to California. Six years later they moved to Oregon.
Around 1914, when Grant was about 45 years old, he was working as a mail carrier for the U.S. Government. He used a mule team and his route was from the Blue Lake and Korbel areas, through the Hoopa Indian Reservation, up the Klamath River, through the Redwood Creek Valley on the west side of Hoopa and onward to Orleans, Happy Camp and Yreka. On one trip he carved his name in a sidewalk in downtown Yreka. Many years later, his grandson, Arthur Hoffman, found the carved name of Grant U. Hillman in the sidewalk.
Grant met Mattie TenEyke during his travels through Hoopa. At the time Mattie was head of the little boys dormitory at the Hoopa Reservation Indian School. In 1915 he bought property in Orleans, California. He and Mattie were married and the couple moved onto the property, establishing the Hillman Ranch.
Mattie TenEyke's parents were Sally Horn, a full-blood Karuk Indian (her Indian name was Ma-hon-in) and George TenEyke, a local trapper. She was born at her mother's home on the Klamath River near the Ishi Pishi Indian Village at Somes Bar, Humboldt County, California.
When Mattie was 17, her mother gave permission for Mattie to be taken by wagon train to Carlisle, Pennsylvania where she was entered into the U.S. Carlisle Industrial School for Indians. Indians of all tribes across America were sent there to be civilized and educated. Upon entry to the school, the students were to give up any items they had brought with them. Their clothing was taken and each student was issued government apparel. The students were not to speak their native language and their hair was cut to a "civilized" length. Mattie became proficient in sewing and hospital service. During the summer months she was sent to different homes on the east coast to provide child care and home-making services. She spent three summers with two families (patrons) at Ocean City, New Jersey. Mattie graduated from Carlisle on March 31, 1910. She was sent home via a freighter around Cape Horn. She departed the ship in San Francisco and made her way by stage and horseback to the Ishi Pishi Village, Somes Bar, California, that same year.
Between the years of 1911 and 1913, Mattie was an Assistant Matron in Service for the little boy's dormitory located at the Hoopa Indian Reservation. During her term of employment, she gave birth to a daughter, Esther. The father, who was already married, was a member of the Marshall clan (Hoopa Tribe). Doctor Anderson, who delivered the baby, and his wife wanted to adopt Esther. Mattie took her baby to her sister, Jane Evans, who lived on the Evans Ranch near Orleans, California. Jane had a baby, nearly a year old, and was able to nurse Esther. Mattie returned to Hoopa to complete her term of employment.
As stated earlier, Grant and Mattie Hillman were married in 1915. They were married on Grant's 47th birthday, (their marriage license says he was 45). Mattie was just 26. It may have started as a marriage of convenience, but it proved to be a fruitful one. Mutual respect and loyalty cemented their marriage for 30 years. The couple raised Mattie's daughter and had seven more children of their own.
Grant was one of the construction crew that built the Orleans Bridge after the original bridge was taken out by flood waters. He was a community leader, a member of the school board and became a Constable for the County of Humboldt, a position he maintained for years while tending to his ranch. The Hillman Ranch was located on the east side of the Klamath River and contained orchards of peaches, pears, cherries, apples, various types of nuts, and varieties of grapes and berries. Mattie, for her part, spent each spring, summer and fall canning and preserving food for her family. She made her own soap and churned butter. She made sure there were three meals prepared each day.
When her daughters were of age, they were sent to Indian schools, not only to insure the girls would have a good education, but foremost to make sure the girls would not get involved with the men enrolled at the Civilian Conversation Corps (CCC) camp. (During the 1930's Grant and Mattie allowed the U.S. Government to use the upper part of the Ranch as a CCC camp for $1.00 a year.)
Many years later, when their children were grown, Grant and Mattie moved to Eureka, Humboldt County, California. With no one to help with the ranch, a caretaker was left in charge. Grant was now in his early to mid-70's and the years of ranching had taken their toll. He enjoyed his last Christman (1944) with all the family joined around a large Christmas tree. He was thrilled to receive a pair of socks. It became more difficult to care for Grant and he was placed in a rest home where he died on Feburary 23, 1945.
After Grant's death, Mattie got a job at the Eureka Inn located in Eureka. She was a dish washer and assisted with food preparation. She was a member of the Cooks' and Waiters' Local No. 220, an affiliate of the Hotel & Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union (AFL-CIO). On Feburary 24, 1959, while walking to work, she was struck by a car and died on February 25, 1959.
