OBITUARY - The Commercial Appeal, (Memphis, TN) — Wednesday, December 11, 2013
WILLIAM FRIERSON HUGHES, JR. died of cancer December 4, 2013. Bill was born in Memphis, TN, April 9, 1943, the son of William F. Hughes and Elizabeth Leavell Hughes. He was two time Boys State Tennis Champion and led Central High School to two state titles. He did his undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University and received his Master's degree from The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. He spent his entire career in the financial services industry and retired after thirty years with Morgan Keegan as Executive Managing Director and President of Morgan Asset Management. He was actively involved in the Memphis community through participation in many social and charitable organizations. Among these were President of the Phoenix Club, Board Member of the Boys Club of Memphis, member of the 100 Club, Member and Director of the University Club of Memphis, member of the Memphis Country Club. He is survived by the love of his life, Katherine Weems Hughes, his wife of 45 years. He is also survived by his two children, son William F. Hughes III of Nashville (Katye), and his daughter, Catherine W. Hughes of San Francisco, CA, his two grandchildren, William F. Hughes IV (Winn) and Harper A. Hughes, his sisters, Camille Hughes LeMaster (Eb) of Memphis and Elizabeth Hughes O'Connor (Tim) of St. Louis, MO. Bill was a sportsman who loved the outdoors, spending as much time hunting and fishing as possible. He was a deceptively competitive athlete, known on the tennis courts for his faded bandana headgear, one racquet and wicked left serve spin. He loved to run the boat at Bear Creek, smoking a cigar, drinking a Corona and catching bass out of the slot - simultaneously. He was a crack shot who could hit a flying bird at 50 yards- when he was in his 60's. He was funny and smart, good at cards and numbers, understood new business products better than the young guys. He loved life and people, made and kept friends from childhood, through college and business and, as he said, the eventual resting place of athletes, his golf group. He was a good husband, fine father, devoted grandfather, honest and fair businessman. Bill always played his best game. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 12, at 10 a.m., at the University Club of Memphis, 1346 Central Avenue. Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) designated for The Melanoma Research Fund and mailed to: The Gift Processing Office, Vanderbilt University, PMB 407727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37240-7727.
