Deceased Name: REGINALD E. RUTLEDGE, LOCAL INSURANCE PIONEER
Reginald E. Rutledge, 94, a direct descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, died Saturday at his home in Coral Gables.
Edward Rutledge, at 26, was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, which was signed on July 4, 1776. Edward Rutledge was a representative from South Carolina in the First and Second Continental Congresses from 1774 to 1776, and a captain of artillery during the Revolutionary War.
His brother, John Rutledge, signed the Constitution of the United States and served as governor of South Carolina from 1779 to 1782. [See note below.]
Two centuries later, in South Florida, Reginald Rutledge left his mark in the insurance business.
A graduate of the University of Virginia, Rutledge -- who was nicknamed "Mr. Insurance" -- moved to South Florida in 1931 and began shaping some of the local insurance business.
As vice president of Seibels, Bruce & Company, a South Carolina firm with offices in South Florida, Rutledge started many local property and liability insurance agencies.
He worked there for 60 years until his retirement at the age of 81.
"My father was known for being one of the very best insurance men in South Florida, for his generous spirit in helping young agents get started and for his unmatched wit," said his son R.E. Rutledge Jr.
In his spare time, Rutledge loved fishing and football.
He often joined other businessmen in selling football tickets door-to-door to the Palm Festival, a game that predated the Orange Bowl.
Gardening was another hobby.
"Dad's garden was very precious to him; it looked wonderful," said his son. In addition to his son, Rutledge is survived by his wife Evelyn P. Rutledge; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter. Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove.
Note: Most genealogies show that Reginald Edmund Rutledge was a direct descendant of John Rutledge and not his brother, Edward Rutledge.

Mr. Rutledge died August 12, 2009. Born in Asheville, he was the son of the late Ruth Deville and Frederick Reeves Rutledge Sr. Fred attended St. Genevieves In-The-Pines School in Asheville, N.C., Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and in 1940 entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a tennis scholarship. He was president of his DKE Rush Class and served in several leadership roles during his years at U.N.C.
In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Captain in the Counter-Intelligence Corps. During World War II he served in France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
After the war, Fred moved to Dallas, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Dent.
They were married March 4, 1949, in Dallas.
This March they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
In the early 1950s Fred worked with Prudential Life Insurance Company in Dallas. He also began building custom homes and sold 23 homes in the Dallas area.
In 1958 he moved his family to Columbia, S.C., to be closer to his parents in the area.
In Columbia he returned to the insurance industry and was associated with Guardian Life Insurance, Franklin Life Insurance, John Hancock Life Insurance and retired in 1977 as the manager of Liberty Life Insurance Company where he was a qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
Fred was a proud member of the Richland Sertoma Club and participated in many Richland I Sportsaramas. He was on the original Riverbanks Zoo Commission and enjoyed this relationship immensely. After his service on the Commission, he continued to enjoy the benefits of the Riverbanks Zoo Society.
Always active in the S.C. Republican Party, he ran for City Council in 1970 in an attempt to become the first Republican in that office since the Civil War.
His running mate, Welch Morrisette, won but Fred was narrowly defeated.
He always said that he would have won had not all policemen and firefighters in the city been involved in the infamous May 1970 riots on the University of South Carolina Campus.
Fred was one of the three founding members of the Columbia Tip-Off Club. (The other members were Bee Harper and Charlie Myers).
One of his great passions was U.S.C. basketball and he attended games from 1960 until last year.
He and Frank McGuire were great friends and Fred was an honorary Assistant Coach to McGuire.
He coached youth basketball at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and his teams won the Columbia Interfaith League Championship seven out of eight years. He also won two State Rec. League Championships.
Many of his players are prominent members of the community and still refer to Fred as coach.
Fred also served many years as Sunday School Superintendent at Trinity.
In 1979, Fred and his wife moved to his boyhood home, Asheville, N.C.
He purchased his grandfather's former insurance agency (third oldest in North Carolina, founded in 1889). He worked hard in his semi-retirement and returned the Rutledge Agency back to prominence in the Asheville area. He became active in Republican Politics and started the Western North Carolina chapter of the Gamecock Club, but his true delight was the Asheville Civitan Club. He served as president and was N.C. District LT Governor 1994-1995.
In 1996, Fred sold the Rutledge Agency and retired again.
In 1998, his two sons convinced Fred and Pinkie to move back to Columbia to be closer to the sons and grandchildren.
Fred got involved in U.S.C. basketball and football, attending many games with his sons.
He was a past member of the Asheville Country Club, Forest Lake Country Club, the Tarantella Club and the Palmetto Club.
He loved spending time in Litchfield Beach and trips to Final Four Basketball Tournaments. He counted among his friends, Senators Strom Thurmond, Fritz Hollings and Congressman Floyd Spence.
He loved hunting with his father, grandfather and great-uncle Archibald Rutledge (former Poet Laureate of South Carolina).
He hunted with his family at Hampton Plantation, the family plantation in McClellanville, S.C. Fred was a direct descendent of Edward Rutledge, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and John Rutledge, the first President of South Carolina and signer of the Constitution. [See note below.]
Fred was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and was very proud to be a recent great-grandfather.
He was a wonderful friend and a kind and giving spirit.
He will be missed by many who loved and cherished him.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Rutledge of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Belinda Corbett Rutledge, Charles Rolfe and Robin Abrams Rutledge, all of Blythewood; daughter, Caroline Rutledge and husband, Kenneth Park, of Santa Barbara, CA; grandchildren, William Alexander Julian of Santa Barbara, Heather Rembert Brooks Ferguson and husband, Craig Titley, of Marina Del Rey, CA, Elizabeth Leigh Rutledge Stallings and husband, Page, of Charlotte, Joseph Reeves Rutledge of Columbia, Christopher Reeves Rutledge and wife, Jennifer Dwyer, of Goose Creek; greatgrandchildren, Liza Edgerton Stallings of Charlotte, Landon Reeves Rutledge of Goose Creek; sister, Ruth Rutledge Bailey of Asheville; nephews, Derrick Rutledge Bailey, Thomas Black Bailey, Douglas Middleton Bailey; nieces, Julia Adams Slipher, Mary Anne Adams Warlick. He was predeceased by sister, Anne Rutledge Adams; stepmother, Beatrice Edwards Rutledge.
Memorials may be made to the Asheville Civitan Club, P.O. Box 1755, Asheville, NC 28802, U.S.C. Gamecock Club, 1300 Rosewood Drive Columbia, SC 29208, Providence Medical Center, 2435 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204 or Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223.
Note: Frederick Reeves Rutledge was a direct descendant ot John Rutledge (1739 - 1800), first governor of South Carolina and signer of the United States Constitution. However, Edward Rutledge (1749 - 1800), signer of the Declaration of Independence, was John's younger brother and this means that Frederick Rutledge could not have been a direct descendant of Edward Rutledge.
